Defense leads Badgers past Northwestern

October 1, 2017 By Bill Scott

Paul Chryst

The Wisconsin Badgers defense saved the day on Saturday in a 33-24 win over Northwestern at Camp Randall Stadium.

The Badgers (4-0, 1-0 Big Ten) registered eight quarterback sacks, including three from senior outside linebacker Garret Dooley.  Dooley also finished with eight tackles, including 4 1/2 for loss.

On the back end, senior Natrell Jamerson gets better with every game he plays at safety.  He had two picks on Saturday, the second of which was returned 36 yards for a touchdown.

Wisconsin’s defense allowed just 25 rushing yards, its fewest against a Big Ten opponent since holding Michigan State to 25 rushing yards back on Nov. 1, 2008.

The Badgers also finished with a season-high 11 tackles for loss and is now averaging 8.3 TFLs per game this season.  They entered the game ranked fourth in the Big Ten in that category.

The Badger offense struggled in the first half and trailed the Wild Cats 10-7 at halftime.

Alex Hornibrook completed 11 of 20 for 197 yards and a touchdown.  He tossed a pair of interceptions.  On the ground, freshman Jonathan Taylor had 19 carries for 80 yards and two touchdowns.  Taylor now has seven touchdowns in four games this season.

The Badgers will travel to Lincoln, Nebraska on Saturday to face the Cornhuskers (3-2, 2-0) on Saturday night.

Hornibrook named number-one quarterback to start spring work

March 15, 2017 By Bill Scott

Alex Hornibrook

Last year, Wisconsin didn’t name it’s starting quarterback for the season until days before the opener against LSU at Lambeau Field.  Even though Alex Hornibrook started all nine Big Ten regular-season games as a redshirt freshman, he still shared some playing time with senior Bart Houston.

But Hornibrook, who completed 58.6% of his passes for 1,262 yards with nine touchdowns and seven interceptions, was quickly named the number one man for this season.

Kare’ Lyles will be a redshirt freshman in the fall, and freshman Jack Coan is a newcomer.  They are Hornibrook’s backups.

The Badgers opened spring practice on Tuesday and they opened with David Edwards at left tackle, taking the spot of the departed Ryan Ramczyk.  Edwards started the final seven games last season at right tackle. [Read more…]

Badgers ready for Nebraska

October 28, 2016 By Bill Scott

motion-wThe 11th-ranked Wisconsin Badgers play their first game without linebacker and leading tackler Jack Cichy on Saturday night when they host seventh-ranked Nebraska at Camp Randall Stadium (7 p.m. kickoff).

Cichy suffered a season ending injury in the win at Iowa last week, suffering a pectoral injury.  He leads Wisconsin with 60 tackles and is second in tackles for loss with 7 1/2.

With Cichy out, the Badgers will turn to Ryan Connelly and/or Leon Jacobs to help fill the void.  Starter T.J. Edwards will also be counted on heavily to anchor the middle.  He enters the game second in tackles with 44, after missing the opener against LSU while recovering from a broken foot.

Jacobs was shut down last season because of a toe injury, then spent the offseason and training camp making the transition to fullback.  Injuries forced the Badgers to move him back to linebacker where he quickly picked things up and is ready to go on defense again. [Read more…]

Wisconsin inside linebacker Jack Cichy will miss the rest of the season after suffering a left shoulder injury late in the first half of Saturday’s 17-9 win over the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Cichy leads the team in tackles with 60.  He had 10 in Saturday’s win, including nine in the first half.

Cichy, who was the Big Ten’s Defensive Player of the Week two weeks ago, suffered the injury trying to tackle Iowa running back Akrum Wadley along the sideline in the final minute of the first half.  Cichy wore a shoulder brace and played for the third quarter and into the fourth before finally coming out of the game.

Ryan Connelly replaced Cichy at Iowa and is expected to fill in this week when the Badgers host 7th ranked and unbeaten Nebraska on Saturday night at Camp Randall Stadium. [Read more…]

Jamerson out 4 to 6 weeks

Wisconsin cornerback Natrell Jamerson will miss four to six weeks after suffering a serious leg injury, near the end of Saturday’s 54-10 win over the Akron Zips at Camp Randall Stadium.

If Jamerson is out just four weeks, he could be ready for the Oct. 15 game against Ohio State.  If the injury keeps him out six weeks, the Badger defender wouldn’t be ready to return until the Oct. 29 game against Nebraska.

Jamerson was on four special teams units, including kickoff returns.  Coach Paul Chryst said its viable that starting tailback Corey Clement could take over the kick return duties for Jamerson. [Read more…]

Wisconsin Badger senior outside linebacker Joe Schobert was named the Wisconsin football team’s most valuable player as awards were handed out at the teams annual banquet on Friday night.

Schobert received the Jimmy Demetral Team MVP award, headlining a list of winners that included nine members of the Badgers’ senior class.

Senior wide receiver Alex Erickson was named the team’s Offensive Player of the Year for a season that has seen him pull in 72 catches on the way to first-team All-Big Ten honors.  Erickson needs 76 yards to become the fourth player in school history with a 1,000-yard receiving season.

Senior safety Michael Caputo took home Defensive Player of the Year honors for his contributions to a defense that ranks No. 1 nationally, allowing 13.1 points a game.

Sophomore Natrell Jamerson, who returned a kick 98-yards for a touchdown at Maryland, was named Special Teams Player of the Year.
