Three Badgers earn All-America honors

December 16, 2019 By Bill Scott

The honors keep coming for Wisconsin Badger teammates Jonathan Taylor and Tyler Biadasz.  They were named first-team All-Americans by the Associated Press on Monday.

Taylor and Biadasz were joined by teammate Zach Baun, who was a second-team selection at outside linebacker.

It’s the second straight season for Taylor on the AP first team.

Taylor finished the regular season ranked second nationally in rushing at 146.8 yards a game.  He’s rushed for 21 touchdowns and added 24 receptions for 209 yards and five scores.

Taylor won the Doak Walker award last week as the nations top running back.

Biadasz won the Rimington Trophy as the nation’s best center.  He became the first ever Badger center to win that honor.  Biadasz started 40 straight games, earning AP All-American for the very first time.

The second-team selection for Baun is also his first as a Badger.  He recorded 12 1/2 sacks and 19 1/2 tackles for loss this season.

Badgers claim Big Ten West, reclaim Paul Bunyan’s Axe

December 1, 2019 By Bill Scott

The Minnesota Gophers had an outstanding season, but there will be no trip to the Big Ten title game and Paul Bunyan’s Axe is back in the Wisconsin Badgers trophy case, where it belongs.

The Gophers jumped out in front, but the Badgers dominated the rest of the way, pulling out a 38-17 win, capturing the Big Ten West division title.

The Badgers (10-2, 7-2 Big Ten), will return to the league title game at Lucas Oil Stadium for the third time under head coach Paul Chryst.  The Badgers will square off against Ohio State (12-0, 9-0) in a 7 p.m. kickoff on Saturday.  The Buckeyes cruised to a 38-7 win over the Badgers in Columbus in late October.

While Jonathan Taylor was held to 76 yards and two rushing touchdowns, Badger quarterback Jack Coan completed 15 of 21 for 280 yards and two touchdowns.  It was arguably Coan’s best game as a Badger.

Quintez Cephus had five catches for 114 yards and a touchdown.

Gopher quarterback Tanner Morgan completed 20 of 37 for 292 yards and two touchdowns.  But he also threw an interception and lost a fumble, which the Badgers turned into 10 points.

Linebacker Zach Baun had a big day for the defense with nine tackles and two sacks.  The Badgers registered five sacks in all, giving them 44 for the season.

Badgers blank Michigan State for 4th shutout of the season

October 12, 2019 By Bill Scott

The Michigan State Spartans tried to close the door on Wisconsin’s Heisman Trophy candidate Jonathan Taylor on Saturday.  While they held him to a season-low 80 yards on 26 carries, the Badgers found other ways to pull out a 38-0 victory at Camp Randall Stadium.  Taylor did score two rushing touchdowns, and continues to lead the nation in scoring.  He has 14 rushing touchdowns and eight receiving touchdowns on the season.

It’s also the 13th time in his career, that Taylor has rushed for multiple touchdowns in a game.

The Badgers did rush for 222 yards for the game.  Wide receiver Kendric Pryor scored on a 66-yard run.  Kakia Watson added 34 yards and Aron Cruickshank added 28.

Badger quarterback Jack Coan completed 18 of 21 for 180 yards and a touchdown and the Badgers defense did the rest, pulling out their 6th straight win to start the season.  Coan completed passes to eight difference receivers, with tight end Jake Ferguson and wide out Danny Davis leading the way with four catches each. Badger defense saves the day against Northwestern

September 29, 2019 By Bill Scott

The Wisconsin Badgers scored a touchdown on their opening drive for the fourth straight game, then saw their offense disappear for the remainder of the game.  Yet UW, thanks to their defense, pulled out a 24-15 win over the Northwestern Wildcats to improve to 4-0 on the season and 2-0 in the Big Ten.

The offense went 54-yards on 10-plays to go up 7-0.  Over the next 12 possessions, the Badgers managed one field goal.

The Northwestern defense made Jonathan Taylor work for everything.  He finished with 119 yards on 26 carries with the games opening touchdown.  It’s just the first 100-yard rushing day for Taylor against the Wildcats in three tries.  He has now going over 100 yards 26 times in 31 games.  Taylor also moved into fourth place on the Badgers career rushing list with 4,730 yards, moving past Anthony Davis (4,676).

The Wildcats spent much of the game in a zone defense, making life difficult on Badger quarterback Jack Coan. [Read more…]

Badgers turn up the heat, dominate Michigan in Big Ten opener

September 21, 2019 By Bill Scott

Jonathan Taylor ran for 203 yards and two touchdowns and junior quarterback Jack Coan added two more rushing touchdowns to lead the Wisconsin Badgers (3-0, 1-0 BIG) to a dominating 35-14 win over the Michigan Wolverines (2-1, 0-1) in their Big Ten Conference opener at Camp Randall Stadium.

Taylor had 143 yards and two touchdowns in the first quarter, including a 72-yard touchdown run.  He missed the second quarter with leg cramps but returned in the third to finish with 23 carries.  As a team, the Badgers rushed 57 times for 359 yards, a 6.3 yards per carry average.

The Badgers avenged a 38-13 loss in Ann Arbor last season and pushed their win streak over the Wolverines in Madison to five.  Michigan last won in Madison back in 2001.

Wisconsin’s defense held the Wolverines to 40 rushing yards and forced four turnovers.  Michigan is 1-6 on the road against ranked opponents under coach Jim Harbaugh, who took over the program in 2015.

Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst was aggressive from the start.  Michigan stopped the Badgers on their opening drive, but on 4th-and-1 on their own 35 yard line, Chryst kept the punt team on the sidelines. [Read more…]

UW’s Baun out indefinitely with foot injury

April 10, 2018 By Bill Scott

Zach Baun

Wisconsin Badger outside linebacker Zach Baun is out indefinitely after injuring his left foot during spring practice on Friday.

Baun, who missed the 2017 season after suffering a broken left foot in late August, was watching practice on Tuesday while wearing a protective boot.

JSOnline’s Jeff Potrykus reported that UW officials are waiting for the results of an MRI to determine the severity of the injury but it appears they are optimistic Baun didn’t re-break the foot.

Baun entered spring ball expecting to win a starting spot at outside linebacker and had been working with the first unit.  Without Baun, the Badgers are expected to line up Andrew Van Ginkel and walk-on Tyler Johnson.

Van Ginkel finished eighth in tackles last season with 39 and collected a pair of interceptions, one in the Big Ten Championship game and the other in the Orange Bowl.  he also forced two fumbles.

Johnson had eight tackles and two fumbles last season.

The Badgers have five practices left this spring and will play their annual Spring Game on Friday evening at Camp Randall Stadium.

Badgers take another hit at linebacker

August 28, 2017 By Bill Scott

Zach Baun

After losing inside linebacker Jack Cichy for the season with a knee injury, Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst announced the loss of redshirt sophomore outside linebacker Zach Baun with a foot injury.

Baun totaled 15 tackles in a reserve role last season.  With Baun out, redshirt sophomore Tyler Johnson moves up to the No. 2 defensive unit, opposite junior-college transfer Andrew Van Ginkel.  Seniors Garret Dooley and Leon Jacobs are expected to start Friday’s opener against Utah State at Camp Randall Stadium.

Tyler Johnson played quarterback at Menasha High School, where he passed for 1,466 yards and 20 touchdowns and rushed for 1,521 yards and 20 touchdowns as a senior, leading the Blue Jays to the WIAA Division 2 state title.

Badgers ready for Nebraska

October 28, 2016 By Bill Scott

motion-wThe 11th-ranked Wisconsin Badgers play their first game without linebacker and leading tackler Jack Cichy on Saturday night when they host seventh-ranked Nebraska at Camp Randall Stadium (7 p.m. kickoff).

Cichy suffered a season ending injury in the win at Iowa last week, suffering a pectoral injury.  He leads Wisconsin with 60 tackles and is second in tackles for loss with 7 1/2.

With Cichy out, the Badgers will turn to Ryan Connelly and/or Leon Jacobs to help fill the void.  Starter T.J. Edwards will also be counted on heavily to anchor the middle.  He enters the game second in tackles with 44, after missing the opener against LSU while recovering from a broken foot.

Jacobs was shut down last season because of a toe injury, then spent the offseason and training camp making the transition to fullback.  Injuries forced the Badgers to move him back to linebacker where he quickly picked things up and is ready to go on defense again. [Read more…]

Wisconsin inside linebacker Jack Cichy will miss the rest of the season after suffering a left shoulder injury late in the first half of Saturday’s 17-9 win over the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Cichy leads the team in tackles with 60.  He had 10 in Saturday’s win, including nine in the first half.

Cichy, who was the Big Ten’s Defensive Player of the Week two weeks ago, suffered the injury trying to tackle Iowa running back Akrum Wadley along the sideline in the final minute of the first half.  Cichy wore a shoulder brace and played for the third quarter and into the fourth before finally coming out of the game.

Ryan Connelly replaced Cichy at Iowa and is expected to fill in this week when the Badgers host 7th ranked and unbeaten Nebraska on Saturday night at Camp Randall Stadium. [Read more…]
