Badgers Offense Struggles Again In Loss At Iowa, Minnesota’s Next

December 13, 2020 By Bill Scott

Paul Chryst

Another struggling offensive performance led to another Wisconsin defeat, 28-7 against the Iowa Hawkeyes on Saturday afternoon in Iowa City.

The Hawkeyes broke open a close game with a pair of long touchdown drives in the third quarter, handing the Badgers their third straight loss.  The Badgers failed to reach 10-points for the third straight game.

The Badgers (2-3) fell below the .500 mark for just the second time under head coach Paul Chryst.

The Badgers played again without their top two receivers, Danny Davis and Kendric Pryor due to injury.  They also played without their leading rusher, freshman Jalen Berger, who came in averaging 89 yards a game on the ground, but tested positive for the coronavirus.

As a result, the Badgers offense managed just 225 yards and a lone touchdown by running back Nakia Watson.  The Badgers finished with 56 rushing yards on 33 carries.  Redshirt freshman quarterback Graham Mertz finished with 169 yards and an interception.

The Badgers will try to finish the season on a positive note and climb back to .500 when they host rival Minnesota at 3 p.m. on Saturday [Read more…]

Badgers blank Michigan State for 4th shutout of the season

October 12, 2019 By Bill Scott

The Michigan State Spartans tried to close the door on Wisconsin’s Heisman Trophy candidate Jonathan Taylor on Saturday.  While they held him to a season-low 80 yards on 26 carries, the Badgers found other ways to pull out a 38-0 victory at Camp Randall Stadium.  Taylor did score two rushing touchdowns, and continues to lead the nation in scoring.  He has 14 rushing touchdowns and eight receiving touchdowns on the season.

It’s also the 13th time in his career, that Taylor has rushed for multiple touchdowns in a game.

The Badgers did rush for 222 yards for the game.  Wide receiver Kendric Pryor scored on a 66-yard run.  Kakia Watson added 34 yards and Aron Cruickshank added 28.

Badger quarterback Jack Coan completed 18 of 21 for 180 yards and a touchdown and the Badgers defense did the rest, pulling out their 6th straight win to start the season.  Coan completed passes to eight difference receivers, with tight end Jake Ferguson and wide out Danny Davis leading the way with four catches each. Badgers cap disappointing season with blowout bowl victory

December 28, 2018 By Bill Scott

Jonathan Taylor

Wisconsin running back Jonathan Taylor rushed 27 times for 205 yards and a touchdown to lead the Badgers to a 35-3 Pinstripe Bowl victory over the Miami Hurricanes on Thursday in New York.

Taylor posted his 12th game of at least 150 yards and 100 yards in his 12th game this season, tying Melvin Gordon’s program record set in 2014.

Taylor’s performance pushed his season total to 2,194 yards and his two season total to 4,171 yards, becoming the only FBS runner to surpass the 4,000-yard mark in his first two seasons.  He was named the Pinstripe Bowl MVP.

The Badgers struggled throughout the season and saw the regular season come to a disappointing end with a trophy game loss to the Minnesota Gophers at Camp Randall.

Thursday’s rout of the Hurricanes at the very least, sent the Badgers into the offseason on a high-note.

The Badgers won their fifth straight bowl game and second in as many years against Miami.  The Badgers knocked off the Hurricanes in last year’s Orange Bowl 34-24.  Wisconsin improved to 8-5. [Read more…]

Football Badgers blown out by Michigan, Hornibrook struggles

October 14, 2018 By Bill Scott

Alex Hornibrook

Wisconsin’s beat up defense held its own for a while on Saturday night, but the offense played one of its worst games in recent memory as the Badgers fell to the Michigan Wolverines 38-13 in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

The Wisconsin defense started the game without starting defensive end Isaiahh Loudermilk (ankle injury).  Starting safety couldn’t go after testing his injured leg in pregame warm-ups.  The other starting safety, Scott Nelson, had to sit the first half after an ejection in the second half last week for targeting.  He returned but quickly left in the third quarter with a left leg injury.  Starting corner Faion Hicks was declared out early with a leg injury.

Despite all of those defensive injury issues, the Badgers played tough against the Wolverines, keeping the game close before eventually wearing down late in the game.

The Badgers got an early touchdown when Kendric Pryor scored on a 33-yard jet sweep early in the second quarter.

The Badgers ground game was good early.  Jonathan Taylor had 79 yards on 11 carries in the first half, but he would get just 22 more yards on the ground in the second half, finishing with 101 yards on 17 carries.

Quarterback Alex Hornibrook finished 7 of 20 for 100 yards and two interceptions.  His first completion of the second half came with five minutes left in the game.  The Badgers finally added a second touchdown when Hornibrook found A.J. Taylor on a three-yard touchdown connection with 3:47 to play.

The Badgers lost the time of possession statistic 37:01 to 22:59 and finished just 2 of 11 on third downs.

Wisconsin dropped to 4-2 overall, 2-1 in the Big Ten.  They’ll return to Madison to host Illinois this Saturday at Camp Randall.

Badgers drop in AP Poll

With Saturday’s loss, the Badgers dropped eight spots from 15th to 23rd in the A.P. Top 25 College Football Poll.  The Badgers started the season ranked number-4.

Michigan secured its best ranking of the season, climbing to sixth.

Badgers stay perfect, keep playoff hopes alive

November 19, 2017 By Bill Scott

Another strong second half pushed the Wisconsin Badgers to 11-0 on the season, knocking off rival Michigan 24-10 at Camp Randall Stadium on Saturday.

Wisconsin (11-0, 8-0 Big Ten) stayed in the running for a berth in the College Football Playoff by knocking off a Michigan (8-3, 5-3) team that carried a three game winning streak into the game, but the Wolverines were the latest team to by stymied by the best defense in the country.

Wisconsin entered the game number one in total defense (247.6 yds. per game), rushing defense (81.5 pgg) and passing efficiency defense (94.5 rating).  The Badgers also ranked third in the nation in scoring defense (13.4 ppg).

The Wolverines were held to 58 yards on 37 carries, the seventh team this season to fall short of 100-yards rushing against the Badgers.

Wisconsin quarterback Alex Hornibrook threw his normal interception, giving him 12 for the season.  But Hornibrook followed by completing 4 of 7 for 99 yards and a touchdown  on Bucky’s next two scoring drives in the third quarter.  Prior to those two scores, the Badgers trailed 10-7.  When the smoke cleared, it was 21-10 and the Badgers were in control. November 12, 2017 By Bill Scott

The Wisconsin defense played its best game of the season and the Badgers clinched a spot in the Big Ten Championship game by rolling over the Iowa Hawkeyes 38-14 in front of a crowd of 80,462 on Saturday at Camp Randall Stadium.

The Badgers secured a share of the Big Ten West Division championship for the second straight season and the third time in the last four years.  Bucky earned its 5th berth in the Big Ten Championship game in the event’s 7-year history.

UW (10-0, 7-0 Big Ten) became the first team in program history to win its first 10 games.  It also marked the first time since 2008 that the home team has won in this rivalry.

Iowa (6-4, 3-4) saw its two game win streak come to an end.

Wisconsin’s defense was on top of their game from start to finish, holding the Hawkeyes to 20 yards on 23 plays in the opening half.  The Badgers led 17-7 at halftime.

When the Badgers scored for the last time with just over seven minutes to play, the Hawkeyes had just 46 yards on 43 plays.  Iowa finished with 66 yards on 50 plays and went 0-for-13 on third downs.
