Madison’s Steve Stricker will lead the 12-man United States Presidents Cup team in matches to be played in 2017.

The 49-year-old Stricker will lead the 12-man U.S. squad against an International team made up of players from around the world, excluding Europe in the biennial competition which is slated for Liberty National Golf Club in Jersey City, N.J.

Nick Price was named captain of the International team.

Stricker served as one of Tom Watson’s assistant captains at the 2014 Ryder Cup and will serve in that role for Davis Love III at the 2016 Ryder Cup, September 30 to October 2 at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota.

The U.S. team has won seven of the nine previous competitions.  Stricker also played in the competition five times, most recently in 2013, compiling a 14-10 record.

Madison’s Steve Stricker will serve as an assistant captain on the U.S. squad for the upcoming Presidents Cup Oct. 6-11 in South Korea.

Jay Haas is the captain for the U.S. team.  He had already picked Fred Couples and Davis Love III as assistant captains and has now added Stricker.

Stricker played on the U.S. team five times, compiling a 14-10-0 record.  He also played on the U.S. Ryder Cup team three times.  He was an assistant on  the 2014 Ryder Cup squad under Tom Watson and many believe Stricker could lead the U.S. team in 2020 when the Ryder Cup comes to Whistling Straits.

The U.S. Presidents Cup team will be finalized on September 7.

Stricker helps Americans take Presidents Cup lead

October 4, 2013 By Bill Scott

Madison’s Steve Stricker helped the Americans grab the first day lead on day one of the Presidents Cup at Muirfield Village in Dublin, Ohio.

Stricker’s difficult sand shot to three feet saved par as he and 20-year-old Jordan Spieth held on for a 1-up win in the final match of the day.

That gave the Americans a 3 1/2 to 2 1/2 lead after the first day of competition.  It’s the fourth straight time the Americans have led after the opening session of Presidents Cup play.
