Wisconsin reportedly enters bids to host NCAA Hockey Regionals

April 17, 2019 By Bill Scott

Kohl Center

The University of Wisconsin last played host to a NCAA men’s hockey regional at the Kohl Center in 2008.  The fact that the Kohl Center isn’t a neutral site and is closer to an Olympic size rink, than the preferred NHL-size rink has kept them from hosting again.

However, a lack of bids from teams in the West has allowed for Wisconsin to throw their hat in the ring again.

According to a Wisconsin State Journal story, first reported by hockey writer Todd Milewski, UW has entered bids to host regionals in 2021 and 2022.  The host sites for the 2020 and 2021 events are expected to be announced by the NCAA this week.

In 2008, the Kohl Center drew 9,968 and 9,816 fans for the two days of the tournament.  In the 11 years since, only Minnesota (10,974) drew more fans at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, with a trip to the 2012 Frozen Four on the line.

WIAA & UW extend state championship deal

November 16, 2012 By Bill Scott

The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) and the

Kohl Center

University of Wisconsin agreed to a seven-year contract extension that grants the WIAA availability to campus facilities for hosting high school State championships in boys basketball, football, golf, wrestling and softball through the spring of 2020.  The Announcement came at a news conference today.

The Kohl Center has been the site of the State Boys Basketball Tournament and the State Individual Wrestling Tournament since 1998 when the facility was opened.  With the exception of 1936, the boys basketball tournament has been held in Madison since 1920, and the wrestling championships have been conducted there since 1949.  The UW Field House has been the site of the State Team Wrestling Championship Tournament since it was moved from West Allis in 2005.

Camp Randall Stadium has been home to the WIAA State Football Finals since 1982, and University Ridge has served as host of the girls and boys State golf Championships since 1994, with the exception of the girls tournament this fall because of course renovations.  Goodman Diamond has hosted the State Softball Championship Tournament since it moved from Waukesha in 2002.

WIAA to announce state basketball decision today

April 24, 2012 By Bill Scott

The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) is expected to announce today where the state boys and girls basketball tournaments will be held.

The WIAA’s Board of Control will hold its meeting at 1pm in Stevens Point and then vote on the measure later this afternoon.  Executive Director Dave Anderson and Associate Director Deb Hauser will hold a news conference after the vote.

At state is whether or not the tournaments will remain in Madison or move to the Green Bay area.

The 11-person WIAA Board of Control in February approved a recommendation from Anderson to accept a bid by Ashwaubenon-based PMI Entertainment to host the basketball state tournaments as early as next year.

The WIAA then said it would enter into a five-year agreement with the PMI and the Resch Center if the University of Wisconsin couldn’t accommodate the tournaments in accordance with the terms of the existing agreements.

The major issue centers around UW’s ability to guarantee use of the Kohl Center for state tournaments.

Ward’s term at UW extended

October 4, 2011 By Bob Hague

University of Wisconsin System President Kevin Reilly is extending UW-Madison Chancellor David Ward’s interim appointment to two years. Ward agreed in June to a one year term as UW’s interim Chancellor following the departure of Chancellor Biddy Martin. He had previously served as UW-Madison Chancellor from 1993 to 2000, and then as President of the American Council on Education in Washington, D.C. for seven years. Reilly decided to extend Chancellor Ward’s appointment, taking into account the requests of faculty, staff, students, and others at UW-Madison. A nationwide search for a new UW-Madison chancellor will be launched in Fall 2012, with a goal of naming the new Chancellor by Spring 2013. Reilly will consult with UW-Madison faculty, staff, students, and others about the best ways to organize that new search committee and about the timeline for nominating members.

Guns will be banned on UW campuses

September 20, 2011 By Bob Hague

All the campuses in the University of Wisconsin System will be banning concealed weapons. “It’s long been effectively state law, that people were not allowed to carry any kind of weapon, a firearm or anything else, on any part of the university’s property,” said UW System spokesman Dave Giroux. The new law allowing concealed carry throughout the state would override current state statute, and although there’s no requirement that they do so, Giroux said there’s consensus on the campuses. “Without exception as far as I know, every UW campus will be taking the steps necessary, in compliance with the new law, to ban firearms from university facilities,” said Giroux. That means no guns will be allowed, period. Campus buildings will all be posted to prohibit guns by the time the concealed carry law goes into effect November 1st.

UW prof is ‘open textbook’ author (AUDIO)

September 19, 2011 By Bob Hague

A UW Madison professor has tackled the issue of costly textbooks head-on. Dr. Dr. Timothy Paustian is a UW professor who faced a dilemma — more and more students who could not afford textbooks costing hundreds of dollars. Paustian’s solution was to write his own. “I was already writing pages for my students, explaining stuff and filling in the gaps sometimes,” said Paustian. “I did all the copy editing, I did all the copyrights for all the figures. I made all the other figures that I needed, and I published it on the web.” His students have been using the text for nearly a decade. “The students thought it was great. There were some issues with it. It needed more editing, and over the years it’s gotten better and better. But they’ve been very happy with it.” [Read more…]

Spotlight on textbook costs

September 16, 2011 By Bob Hague

Textbook rebellion PHOTO: WRN

A ‘rebellion’ against costly college textbooks made a stop Thursday in Madison. UW professor, Dr. Timothy Paustian, said textbooks are being priced out of the reach of many students. “When I was a student, textbooks were 30 or 50 dollars. That seemed like a fair price back then, but textbooks have gotten more and more and more expensive.”

Sidney Zeller is a UW Madison freshman. She’s spent 500 dollars on textbooks this semester, including one that cost 200 dollars. But she’s lucky compared to some. “I know students that actually just don’t purchase their textbooks,” said Zeller. “They use friends’ textbooks or go to the library or try to get a hold of on-line sources, but a lot of them can’t afford it with the cost of school.” [Read more…]

UW-Green Bay double dip alleged

September 8, 2011 By WRN Contributor

The head of the state Assembly Colleges and Universities Committee says officials at UW-Green Bay could be breaking the law. Representative Steve Nass has canceled an Assembly committee public hearing after hearing of a UW-Green Bay vice-chancellor receiving both a pension and a regular paycheck. “I want to see how widespread the problem is, as far as people being hired back in the university system,” said Nass. “The Department of Administration has also begun looking at the entire state, to see how many hires have been made.” [Read more…]
