Despite cold shooting, No. 21 Wisconsin gets by Nebraska (AUDIO)

February 11, 2021 By Bill Scott

The Wisconsin Badgers may have been fortunate to be facing a Nebraska team that is still looking for its first Big Ten Conference victory.  UW struggled again offensively, shooting just 32% from the field but still managed to pull out a 61-48 victory over the Cornhuskers in Lincoln, Neb.

Freshman Jonathan Davis scored 10 points, the only Badger in double figures to help UW pull away in the second half.

With five of their final six games against ranked opponents, the Badgers will most likely have to figure out their shooting woes or struggle to win games as a result.  The first test comes Sunday against 3rd ranked Michigan at the Kohl Center.

The Badgers (15-6, 9-5 Big Ten) swept their season series with the Huskers.  Nebraska (4-11, 0-8) has now lost 25 straight games in Big Ten play. [Read more…]

The Wisconsin Badgers (14-6, 8-5 Big Ten) missed out on a chance to move into a tie for second place in the Big Ten, falling to Illinois (13-5, 9-3) 75-60 on Saturday in Champaign.

The Illini extended their winning streak to four games and moved to within one-half game of the first-place Michigan Wolverines, who are still on pause and won’t play again until Feb. 14 against the Badgers.

Kofi Cockburn led the Illini with 23 points and 14 rebounds, collecting nine dunks against the Badgers.  Ayo Dosunmu added 21 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists for the Illini, who shot 52.8% (28 of 53) from the field.

The Badgers made a couple of small second half runs but could never get any closer than seven points.

D’Mitrik Trice shook off a short offensive slump by scoring 22 points for the Badgers in the loss.  Nate Reuvers added 11 points, while Tyler Wahl and Jonathan Davis added seven points each.  But senior guard Brad Davison missed all five of his three-point attempts and went scoreless for the game.

The Badgers missed all 9 three-point attempts in the first half and finished just 4 of 24 (16.7%) for the game from distance.

The Badgers string of seven-straight wins in Champaign came to an end.  They return to action on Thursday against the Nebraska Cornhuskers in Lincoln (4 p.m. CT – BTN).

The top-ranked Wisconsin women’s hockey team rallied from a two-goal deficit in the third period to knock off No. 2 Minnesota, 4-3, in overtime on Friday night at Ridder Arena.

Senior Daryl Watts scored twice, including the game-winning goal in OT to lead the Badgers (9-2-0, 8-2-1-1 WCHA) to their fifth-straight win against the Golden Gophers (9-5-0, 9-4-0-1 WCHA).  Senior Caitlin Schneider and junior Britta Curl also scored in the come-from-behind win.

The Gophers scored early in the third, but UW’s Schneider scored halfway through the final frame to close the gap to one.  With just over 35 seconds left, UW pulled goaltender Kennedy Blair and Curl took a feed from Watts to tie the game at 3-3.

Wisconsin’s Byrne named Big Ten Cross Country Coach of the Year

February 3, 2021 By Bill Scott

The Big Ten Conference announced the first of its postseason cross country awards on Wednesday afternoon.  Wisconsin’s Mick Byrne was tabbed the men’s Big Ten Coach of the Year, as selected through a unanimous vote by the conference’s head coaches.

Byrne helped Wisconsin to its 10th Big Ten title since he became the Badgers’ head coach in 2008, leading Wisconsin to the 51st Big Ten Championship in program history and third in as many years last weekend.  Byrne is now a 10-time Big Ten Coach of the Year, with all 10 of those honors coming in the last 13 seasons.

Michigan State’s Lisa Breznau was named the women’s Big Ten Coach of the Year for the first time, after the Spartans won the Big Ten women’s title last week.
