No. 3 Michigan returns from layoff, sweeps Wisconsin

February 14, 2021 By Bill Scott

The third-ranked Michigan Wolverines returned from a three-week layoff, coming from 14 points down to knock off the 21st ranked Wisconsin Badgers 67-59 on Sunday afternoon at the Kohl Center, sweeping the two game season series.

The Wolverines (14-1, 9-1 Big Ten) scored the games final eight points and held the Badgers without a field goal for the final 4:43 of the game.  UW had just one field goal over the last 7:45.  Wisconsin (15-7, 9-6) missed its last seven shots.

Isaiah Livers scored 20 points and freshman Hunter Dickinson collected a double-double with 11 points and 15 rebounds.

The Wolverines last played on Jan. 22nd, beating Purdue 70-53.  Michigan announced the next day that it was pausing all athletic activities after a number of people linked to the athletic department tested positive for a COVID-19 variant that transmits at a higher rate.

The Badgers shot 53.8% overall and went 5 of 7 from 3-point range in the first half, but Wisconsin shot just 25% (7 of 28) in the second half and missed their last 11 3-point attempts. [Read more…]

Despite cold shooting, No. 21 Wisconsin gets by Nebraska (AUDIO)

February 11, 2021 By Bill Scott

The Wisconsin Badgers may have been fortunate to be facing a Nebraska team that is still looking for its first Big Ten Conference victory.  UW struggled again offensively, shooting just 32% from the field but still managed to pull out a 61-48 victory over the Cornhuskers in Lincoln, Neb.

Freshman Jonathan Davis scored 10 points, the only Badger in double figures to help UW pull away in the second half.

With five of their final six games against ranked opponents, the Badgers will most likely have to figure out their shooting woes or struggle to win games as a result.  The first test comes Sunday against 3rd ranked Michigan at the Kohl Center.

The Badgers (15-6, 9-5 Big Ten) swept their season series with the Huskers.  Nebraska (4-11, 0-8) has now lost 25 straight games in Big Ten play. [Read more…]

Badgers settle a score against Maryland (AUDIO)

January 28, 2021 By Bill Scott

After falling to Maryland 70-64 on December 28, allowing the Terrapins to score 38 points in the paint, the 14th ranked Wisconsin Badgers turned the tables last night, pulling out a 61-55 win in College Park.

Everything went well for the Badgers in the first half, has they jumped out to an 18-point halftime lead.

Wisconsin knew Maryland would deliver a punch in the second half and the Terrapins did.  But the Badgers (13-4, 7-3 Big Ten) took that punch and survived, handing Maryland (9-8, 3-7) it’s seventh conference loss this season.

Micah Potter finished with season highs in points with 23 and rebounds with 12 to lead the Badgers.  Senior guard D’Mitrik Trice added 13 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists. [Read more…]

10th ranked Badgers hand Northwestern 6th straight defeat (AUDIO)

January 21, 2021 By Bill Scott

After allowing Northwestern to score 34 points in the first half, Wisconsin coach Greg Gard said his team needed to be much better in the second half.  The 10th ranked Badgers got the message, allowing just 18 points in the second half, holding the Wildcats to their lowest point total of the season in a 68-52 Wisconsin victory at the Kohl Center.

“I thought we did a better job of stopping the ball and not letting them get in the paint,” said Gard.  “I thought the first half, we didn’t execute well enough in some of the ball-screen situations.  Second half, we were better.  We talked about some of those things at halftime.  The second 20, I thought we were more aggressive in the ball screens and eliminated some of that dribble penetration.” [Read more…]

Just hours after climbing to sixth in the Associated Press Top 25 Men’s College Basketball Poll, the Wisconsin Badgers were upset by the Maryland Terrapins 70-64 on Monday night at the Kohl Center.

Wisconsin’s 10-game Big Ten win streak, which dated back to last season, is history.  So is Wisconsin’s 15-game home court winning streak at the Kohl Center.

The Badgers failed to touch the post on a consistent basis, which is a big part of their offense.  Wisconsin was outscored in the paint 38-18, as Badger big men Micah Potter and Nate Reuvers failed to make an impact.  Potter made just 2 of his 8 field goal attempts and finished with four points and five rebounds.  Reuvers made 4 of his 10 shots and finished with eight points and six rebounds.

D’Mitrik Trice had 25 points, hitting 8 of 14 from the field.  Aleem Ford is the only other player to finish in double figures with 10 points.

Wisconsin (8-2, 2-1 Big Ten) shot 43% from the field for the game (24 for 55).  They entered the game making 41% of their three-point attempts but hit just 8 of 21 (38%) against Maryland.  The Badgers also attempted just 15 free throws and made [Read more…]

The Wisconsin Badgers (4-1) started strong both offensively and defensively, then held on to beat the Rhode Island Rams 73-62 at the Kohl Center on Wednesday.

D’Mitrik Trice led the Badgers defensively, holding Rams guard Fatts Russell to eight points.  Russell entered the game averaging 17.6 points a game but made just 3 of  his 14 field goal attempts.

Nate Reuvers recorded three blocks to break Ethan Happ’s program record of 154.  Reuvers now had 157, but he also spent time on the bench while dealing with foul trouble.  He had just 5 points on 2 of 8 shooting from the field. [Read more…]
