Badgers rank #12 in A.P. Top 25 College Football Preseason Poll

August 24, 2020 By Bill Scott

Despite the Big Ten Conference not playing football this fall, six of the conference’s teams showed up today in the Associated Press Top 25 Preseason Poll.

Paul Chryst’s Wisconsin Badgers showed up at number-12, third among the six Big Ten teams in the poll.  It’s the fourth straight season the Badgers have been ranked in the preseason.

Ohio State checks in at number-2, behind preseason number-1 Clemson.  Alabama, Georgia and Oklahoma round out the top five.

Penn State checks in at number-7.  Michigan is 16th, Minnesota 19th and Iowa is ranked 24th.

All Division-1 teams were considered for the preseason poll, regardless of whether or not they’re set to play games this fall.  Both the Big Ten and Pac 12 are among the conferences that have postponed their fall seasons.

Once games begin this fall, voters in the A.P. Poll will only consider the teams currently playing.  As of Monday, 67 of the 130 Football Bowl Subdivision teams are playing this fall.

Hockey Badgers drop Big Ten opener

November 1, 2019 By Bill Scott

The 7th ranked Wisconsin men’s hockey team (4-3-0, 0-1-0 Big Ten) dropped its Big Ten-opening matchup on Thursday night, falling at 12th ranked Penn State (5-1-0, 1-0-0 Big Ten) 6-1 on Thursday night.

Freshman Cole Caufield scored the Badgers only goal, his national-leading eighth goal of the season with only seven seconds left in the first period.

Penn State, which was picked in the preseason to win the Big Ten title, scored four power play goals against the Badgers.

Wisconsin has now dropped two of their three series openers so far this season, but in all three series, the Badgers have come back stronger in game two and prevailed.  They’ll be looking to do the same Friday night when the two teams wrap up their 2-game series in University Parik.

The Badgers won’t have forward Roman Ahcan for tonight’s game.  He was ejected from last nights game and has drawn a one-game suspension from the Big Ten Conference for tonight.  Ahcan received a major penalty for interference and a game misconduct in Thursday night’s series opener.

Hockey Badgers sweep Wolverines, face Penn State in Big Ten Tournament

March 3, 2019 By Bill Scott

Linus Weissbach

With Penn State winning at Notre Dame on Saturday, Wisconsin’s chances of securing a home series in the opening round of the Big Ten Conference post-season playoffs went up in smoke.  But that didn’t stop the Badgers from pulling off the two-game sweep of the Wolverines, winning a 4-3 overtime thriller at the Kohl Center.

The Badgers finished the regular season with three straight wins.

Trailing 3-2 in the final minutes, Tony Granato pulled his goaltender and Ty Emberson netted the game tying goal with 1:07 left in regulation.

The Badgers had a goal waved off in overtime after it was ruled they had too many men on the ice.  But a minute later, Linus Weissbach stick handled through traffic and fired a wrist shot from the left side to beat Michigan goaltender Hayden Lavigne and secure a “senior night” win for the Badgers.

Prior to leaving the ice, the Badgers thanked the fans and then helped serenade the crowd to “Varsity”. [Read more…]
