Badgers rout Nittany Lions, earn series split

The Wisconsin Badger men’s hockey team dominated No. 19 Penn State from start-to-finish on Saturday night at Pegula Ice Arena, knocking off the Nittany Lions, 7-3, to earn a weekend split in its final road series of the regular season.

Looking to bounce back from Friday’s 8-2 loss, the Badgers got off to a quick start with first period goals from sophomore defenseman Josh Ess and freshman winger Jack Gorniak.

The Badgers added three more goals in the second period, including a short-handed tally from sophomore Tarek Baker and a second goal from Ess.

Penn State scored twice to make it a 5-2 game heading to the third period, but senior forwards Matthew Freytag and Seamus Malone notched the Badgers’ sixth and seventh goals of the night to seal a 7-3 victory over the Nittany Lions.

Freshman goaltender Daniel Lebedeff made 38 saves in the win.

Sophomores Josh Ess and Linus Weissbach each tallied three points in the win.  Ess’ two goals marked the defenseman’s first multi-goal performance of his career. [Read more…]

Hughes, Freytag named Big Ten’s top two stars

Wisconsin Badger forwards Cameron Hughes and Matthew Freytag were named the Big Ten’s first and second stars respectively on Tuesday.

Hughes (Jr. F Edmonton, Alberta) had a goal and two assists for the Badgers in their two-game sweep over previously 8th-ranked Ohio State over the weekend.  Hughes netted the game-winning overtime goal on Saturday at Madison Square Garden.

Hughes is on a career-high six-game point streak, scoring three goals and registering four assists for seven points.  He earned his second career weekly award and first of the season.

Freytag (Soph. F Wayzata, Minnesota) netted the game-winning goal on Thursday night against Ohio State in Columbus.  He also registered a goal on Saturday night at Madison Square Garden in the third period.

Freytag led the conference with nine shots on the weekend, earning his first career weekly award.

The Badgers take their three-game win streak into East Lansing this weekend to face last place Michigan State in a two-game series starting Friday night.

Hockey Badgers knock off 8th ranked Ohio State

The Wisconsin men’s hockey team won its second straight game against a top-10 ranked opponent on Thursday night, knocking off 8th-ranked Ohio State 3-1 in Columbus.

It’s the second straight win over a top-10 ranked opponent, having beaten 7th ranked Minnesota in the second game of their series last weekend in Madison.

Luke Kunin scored Wisconsin’s first goal, 3 minutes 24 seconds into the game, short handed.  Matthew Freytag scored later in the first, giving the Badgers a 2-0 lead at intermission.

Ryan Wagner added an empty-net goal in the final minute to seal the 3-1 win.

The Badgers (12-8-1, 5-2-0-0 Big Ten) won their 12th game of the season.  It equals the win today for the team over the last two seasons combined.

The two teams wrap up the series on Saturday night (6 p.m.) at Madison Square Garden.

Badger hockey update

Motion WThree goals in the second period gave the Wisconsin men’s hockey team a two-goal lead, but Denver fired right back with two scores of its own to salvage a 3-3 tie with the Badgers.

Matthew Freytag, Jedd Soleway and Luke Kunin scored the three Badger goals while Freshman goaltender matt Jurusik had 21 saves as the Badgers moved to 3-4-4 on the season.

The two teams wrap up their two-game series tonight.

Women extend win streak to 13

The top-ranked Wisconsin women’s hockey team opened a six-game homestand with a 5-1 win over Lindenwood at LaBahn Arena on Friday afternoon.

Emily Clark scored a pair of goals to lead the Badgers to their 13th straight win.

An assist extends sophomore Annie Pankowski’s scoring streak to 16 straight games.

The two teams wrap up their weekend series tomorrow (Sunday) at LaBahn Arena (2 p.m.).
