Marquette’s Wilson will transfer to Texas A & M

March 28, 2017 By Bill Scott

Last week, Marquette point guard Duane Wilson announced that he would graduate this spring and use his final year of basketball eligibility elsewhere.  Wilson confirmed with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel on Tuesday that he would use his final year with Texas A & M next season.

Wilson will join former Golden Eagles assistant coach Isaac Chew, who was part of Buzz Williams’ staff at Marquette from 2012-’14 and helped recruit Wilson.

The Aggies are light on point guards after finishing 16-15 this past season, and that’s where Wilson wants to play.

Wilson played in 30 games for the Golden Eagles in 2016-’17, earning seven starts and averaging 4.8 points and 1.8 rebounds a game.  He started 51 of 95 games during his career at Marquette, averaging 9.6 points and 2.3 rebounds a game.

Cohen staying put at Marquette

April 8, 2014 By Bill Scott

Seymour basketball standout Sandy Cohen wanted to pull his commitment to Marquette after coach Buzz Williams left the program for Virginia Tech.  Cohen has changed his mind after meeting with new Marquette coach Steve Wojciechowski last week.

Wojciechowski drove to Seymour to meet with Cohen last Thursday and last night (Monday), Cohen  confirmed via Twitter that he will remain with the Golden Eagles.

The 6’6 forward averaged 21.3 points a game for Seymour this past season and was named to the all-state first team.

Report: Marquette hires Steve Wojciechowski

April 1, 2014 By Bill Scott

According to an ESPN.com report, Marquette has hired Duke associate head coach Steve Wojciechowski.

The 37-year-old Wojciechowski played four seasons at Duke from 1994 to 1998 and has been on Mike Krzyzewski’s staff since 1999.  Wojciechowski was promoted to associate head coach in 2008.

Wojciechowski replaces Buzz Williams, who left last month.  Marquette failed to make the postseason after finishing 17-15 this past season.

Marquette’s coaching search continues

March 26, 2014 By Bill Scott

Reports on Monday had Shaka Smart set to take the Marquette Golden Eagle head coaching job, replacing Buzz Williams, who left to take the Virginia Tech job.

Two days later, it appears Smart is staying at Virginia Commonwealth (VCU) instead of taking the job in Milwaukee.

Marquette could have more than doubled Smart’s salary, but he’s passed on other big jobs in the past and it appears he’s set to walk away from a move to Marquette.

It leaves Marquette with former UCLA coach Ben Howland, who they have already talked to.  They could also look to interview more coaching prospects.

Marquette recruit hasn’t been released from his scholarship

March 24, 2014 By Bill Scott

After Buzz Williams announced that he was leaving Marquette to take the coaching job at Virginia Tech, recruit Sandy Cohen (Seymour) tweeted Saturday night that he had been released from his scholarship.  But interim A.D. Bill Cords said that was not the case.

Cords told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that Marquette’s all-sports policy states that no student-athlete receives a release following a coaching change until he or she has the chance to speak with the new coach.

Marquette is currently searching for Williams replacement and have reportedly already talked with former UCLA and Pittsburgh coach Ben Howland about the position.

Cohen is one of four incoming freshmen signed by Buzz Williams back in November.  All of the recruits were reportedly told by Marquette assistants to sit tight until a new coach arrives.

season hopes alive by holding off Georgetown (16-12, 7-9) 75-73 on Thursday night at the BMO Harris Bradley Center.

The win is Marquette’s fifth in their last six games.  Davante Gardner scored 26 points and Jake Thomas added a career-high 22 points in the victory.

It’s a tough loss for the Hoyas, who are also in a battle for a spot in the NCAA post-season.  They fell for the 3rd time in the last four games.  Georgetown hit just 7 of 26 from the field in the second half.

Marquette has three games left in the regular season, starting with a trip to Villanova on Sunday.

Another crucial test for Marquette comes tonight

February 27, 2014 By Bill Scott

Two teams on the bubble will hook up at the BMO Harris Bradley Center tonight when the Marquette Golden Eagles host the Georgetown Hoyas in Big East action.

Tonight’s game is the first of four remaining for the Golden Eagles, all of them against teams either on the NCAA bubble, or NCAA Tournament bound.

The Golden Eagles (16-11, 8-6), would move into a third-place tie with Xavier if they can beat the Hoyas tonight.

Marquette’s non-conference record is poor, lacking any significant wins.  The Golden Eagles have no wins against op 25 opponents.  So their post season opportunity now rests on a strong finish, not only in the regular season, but the upcoming Big East Tournament.

Coach Buzz Williams thinks his team is improving.  Will it be enough to land a spot in the NCAA Tournament?

Mayo’s big second half leads Marquette

February 5, 2014 By Bill Scott

Junior guard Todd Mayo scored all 17 of his points in the second half to lead Marquette to a 69-62 win over Butler in Big East Conference action at the BMO Harris Bradley Center.

Marquette trailed by as many as 10-points in the second half before Mayo took over.  It was a clutch performance in a game that Marquette really needed to win.

AUDIO: Buzz Williams says Mayo has a knack for the dramatic :11

Marquette forced 20 Butler turnovers by dialing up the pressure in the second half.

The Golden Eagles improved to 13-10 overall and 5-5 in the Big East Conference.   They’re now off until next Tuesday when they travel to Seton Hall.

Marquette ends Friar’s 5-game win streak

January 31, 2014 By Bill Scott

Marquette coach Buzz Williams started two freshmen last night, JaJuan Johnson and Deonte Burton and rotated players at a fevers pace.  His lineup change helped Marquette hold off Providence 61-50 in Big East action on Thursday night at the BMO Harris Bradley Center.

Marquette was able to withstand a 16-0 Providence run in the second half to win the game.  The Golden Eagles (12-9, 4-4 Big East) heard boo’s from the crowd during the collapse, something Buzz Williams was disappointed to hear.

The loss for the Friars ended a 5-game win streak.

Davante Gardner scored 14 points to lead Marquette, keeping their NCAA tournament hopes in the distance.

The Golden Eagles travel to New York to face St. John’s on Saturday.

Marquette falls at Xavier

January 10, 2014 By Bill Scott

Xavier out-rebounded Marquette 2-1 on the boards last night and knocked off the Golden Eagles 86-79 in Big East action.

The Golden Eagles entered the game first in the league in rebounding margin but got outrebounded 39-20.

Semaj Christon poured in a game high 28 points to lead the Musketeers to their 13th win of the season and a 3-0 start in Big East play.  Christon hit 8 of 10 from the field, including a pair of big three-pointers in the final four minutes.

Davante Gardner had 19 points and Jake Thomas added 17 for the Golden Eagles.

Marquette struggled to stop Xavier inside and on the boards.  Xavier scored 20 points in the paint in the first half alone.

Marquette was picked to win the Big East in a preseason poll, but they’re just 1-2 in league play following the loss.  The Golden Eagles return to the Bradley Center to host Seton Hall on Saturday.
