Badgers hoping to be healthier at tailback

September 21, 2016 By Bill Scott

motion-wAt the moment, the Wisconsin Badgers are preparing for their Big Ten Conference opener at Michigan State with questions concerning their running game.

Fifth-year senior Dare Ogunbowale is the only healthy tailback at the moment.

Corey Clement and backup Taiwan Deal were both limited in practice on Tuesday and redshirt freshman Bradrick Shaw, who suffered a leg injury against Georgia State, didn’t work at all in practice on Tuesday.

There’s still time left before Saturday’s game, so there’s still a chance to get one or more of those running backs back in the fold.

Starter Corey Clement could be the most likely to return.  He took last Saturday’s game off, which gave his sore ankle more time to recover. [Read more…]

Badgers survive upset bid by Georgia State

September 18, 2016 By Bill Scott

alex-hornibrookThe Wisconsin Badgers went into Saturday’s game against Georgia State as 34 1/2 point favorites.  The outcome was much different from what was anticipated.

Wisconsin’s defense was stellar as usual in the first half, but the Badgers managed a 6-0 lead at the break.

The Badgers came out of the locker room and increased that lead to 13-0, after Paul Chryst pulled quarterback Bart Houston for redshirt freshman Alex Hornibrook.

It was at that point that the Panthers scored a pair of touchdowns and jumped out in front 17-13 early in the fourth quarter.

Georgia State used a quick passing game and didn’t allow the Badger pass rushers to make an impact.

The Badgers were able to regain the lead when Hornibrook tossed a short touchdown pass.  They would add a Rafael Gaglianone field goal and then get a big defensive stop to hang on for the win. [Read more…]

Clement is questionable for Georgia State game

September 16, 2016 By Bill Scott

Wisconsin running back Corey Clement is listed as questionable for Saturday’s final non-conference matchup against Georgia State.

Clement missed eight games last season after sports hernia surgery.  He suffered an ankle injury late in the first half of the Akron game last week and was limited in practice this week.

Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst said Clement was able to do some stuff on Monday and hasn’t done a whole lot since.  Certainly the Badgers want Clement healthy for their Big Ten opener next week at Michigan State.

Clement has 42 carries for 197 yards and three touchdowns in the first two games.

If Clement can’t play Saturday, the Badgers will have plenty of options, starting with Dare Ogunbowale (13 carries – 62 yards), Taiwan Deal (13 carries – 60 yards) and redshirt freshman Bradrick Shaw (9 carries – 74 yards and 1 TD).

The Badgers are 34 1/2 point favorites for Saturday’s game.  Kick time at Camp Randall Stadium is set for 11 a.m.

Badgers seek fifth straight Big Ten win

November 7, 2015 By Bill Scott

Motion WThe Wisconsin Badgers shoot for their fifth straight Big Ten win this afternoon when they take on the Maryland Terrapins in college football action in College Park, Maryland.

The Badgers said this week that they’re looking to increase the number of take/aways they get and they should have a chance to act on it against Maryland.  The Terrapins 28 turnovers in eight games is the worst mark in the country.

Maryland has thrown 23 interceptions, compared to Wisconsin’s six.

The Badgers go in with just six interceptions on the season.

The Badgers special teams coverage units will be challenged.  Maryland’s William Likely has three return touchdowns, two on punt returns and one via a kickoff return.  Likely ranks fourth nationally on punt returns and 29th on kickoff returns. [Read more…]

The Big Ten’s weakest rushing defense held Wisconsin to just 99 rushing yards, but Badger running backs still produced three touchdowns in a 24-7 win over the Purdue Boilermakers on Saturday at Camp Randall Stadium.

Senior quarterback Joel Stave hit 30-of-39 passes for 322 yards, but it was the Wisconsin defense that carried the day.

The Boilermakers (1-6, 0-3) couldn’t get anything going.  They were held to season lows in rushing yards with 55 and total yards with 191.

Freshman Alec Ingold ran for two touchdowns and Dare Ogunbowale was the game’s top rusher with 56 yards on 18 carries and a touchdown.

Linebacker T.J. Edwards led the defense with 16 tackles and a fumble recovery.

The Badgers (5-2, 2-1) travels to Illinois this Saturday to face the Illini.

Voltz expects to play Saturday (Badger football update)

Wisconsin center Dan Voltz is expected to play Saturday, when the Badgers host the Purdue Boilermakers at Camp Randall Stadium.  Coach Paul Chryst says the junior has stepped up his workouts this week, after he hurt his left elbow near the end of last Saturday’s Badger victory at Nebraska.

If Voltz plays, it would prevent the Badgers from having to go with a fifth different offensive line combination in seven weeks.

Dare Ogunbowale is expected to get the bulk of the carries at running back as freshman Taiwan Deal continues to struggle with an ankle injury from last week.

Junior running back Corey Clement is said to be getting better after sports hernia surgery, but Chryst could not say when he could be ready to play again.  Wisconsin will try to improve to two-and-one in the Big Ten with a win over Purdue.  The Boilermakers are still looking for their first conference win.

Badgers turn their attention to Purdue

The Wisconsin Badgers (4-2, 1-1 Big Ten) turn their attention to this Saturday’s home game against the Purdue Boilermakers, after their thrilling 23-21 come-from-behind win at Nebraska on Saturday.

Rafael Gaglianone booted a 46-yard field goal with four seconds left and sent the Cornhuskers to 0-2 in the Big Ten and 2-4 overall for the first time since 1959.

The Badgers offense struggled in the first three quarters, then put up 221 yards (132 passing and 89 rushing) in the fourth quarter.  Running back Dare Ogunbowale rushed 12 times for 83 yards in that final frame.

Purdue (1-5, 0-2) comes to Camp Randall on Saturday coming off a 41-13 home loss to the Minnesota Golden Gophers.  Purdue gave up 326 rushing yards and 408 total yards to a Minnesota offense that had struggled coming in.

In two-plus seasons under coach Darrell Hazell, Purdue is 1-17 in the Big Ten and 5-25 overall.

The Badgers should be heavy favorites at home on Saturday their hopes of securing the Big Ten’s West Division title are still alive.

Badgers testing their depth at tailback

September 26, 2015 By Bill Scott

The Wisconsin Badgers close out the non-conference portion of their schedule against Hawaii tonight (7 p.m.) at Camp Randall Stadium.   As it turns out, it’ll be one last chance for running backs Dare Ogunbowale and Taiwan Deal to prepare themselves for the start of the Big Ten Conference season next week against Iowa.

The Badgers learned this week that their starting tailback, Corey Clement will undergo Sports Hernia surgery and missed most if not all of the Big Ten season.

The Badgers are about as prepared as they could be to this point.  Clement had only eight rushes in the opener against Alabama before giving way to Ogunbowale and Deal because of injury.  Clement hasn’t played since. [Read more…]

Clement to undergo Sports Hernia surgery (VIDEO)

September 24, 2015 By Bill Scott

Motion WEarlier this week, the Wisconsin Badger coaches were hoping to have tailback Corey Clement back for this weeks game against Hawaii, if not the following week in the Big Ten Conference opener against the Iowa Hawkeyes at Camp Randall Stadium.

But U-W official announced today that Clement is scheduled to have Sports Hernia surgery next week and could miss four to fix weeks of the Big Ten Conference season.

Clement carried the ball just eight times in the opener against Alabama and has been idle since.

Dare Ogunbowale and Taiwan Deal are now one and two on the Badger depth chart and Alec Ingold, who was moved from linebacker to running back last week, could see some time as well.

Ingold averaged 178.8 yards per game as a senior at Bay Port High School as a quarterback and can play tailback or fullback.  Ingold is currently listed third at the tailback spot on the depth chart.

Badgers look to get running game on track today

The normally dominant Wisconsin running game has been anything but that during the first two weeks of the season.

Today, the Badgers (1-1) host the Troy Trojans at Camp Randall Stadium.  The Badgers ground attack ranks 107th out of 130 teams nationally, while the passing offense is 57th.

The Badgers are happy about the passing offense, but the ground game, which has been the cornerstone for success in Madison for years, is off to a rocky start.

What is the problem?  First, the Badgers have struggled with injuries and youth on their offensive line.  That group’s health is improving daily and the Badgers are continuing to work to find the top five players to go into Big Ten play in a couple of weeks. [Read more…]
