Stearns hires new GM Assistant

October 14, 2015 By Bill Scott

Brewers logoOne day after announcing that assistant Gord Ash would not retain his position as his top assistant, Milwaukee Brewers general manager David Stearns has named Tampa Bay’s director of player personnel Matt Arnold as his vice president and assistant general manager.  The move was first reported by Brewers beat writer Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

The 36-year-old Arnold takes over for Ash, who had served in the assistant GM capacity since 2002.  Ash has been offered Ash an opportunity to stay on in another capacity with the Brewers organization.

Arnold previously served as pro scouting director for the Rays and assisted that organization with player acquisitions, contract negotiations and internal farm system evaluation among others.

Arnold first joined the Rays following the 2006 season as a pro scout and was promoted to director of pro scouting in November of 2009.  He was then promoted to his recent position this summer.

New Milwaukee Brewers general manager David Stearns started the restructuring process of his front office on Tuesday by announcing that assistant GM Gord Ash and the organization’s farm director Reid Nichols are being removed from their positions.

Ash was offered a yet to be determined role in the organization but Nichols will not be back.  The team’s director of minor-league business operations, Scott Martens, also was offered an opportunity to stay with the Brewers.

Stearns said the move to not retain Ash is simply him wanting to have a number two man that he knows and is comfortable with.

Ash and Nichols were hired by former Brewers general manager Doug Melvin back in 2002.

The Milwaukee Brewers announced today that catcher Jonathan Lucroy is expected to be sidelined four to six weeks with a mild strain of his right hamstring.

Lucroy told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel he actually played with the injury late last season.  He said the hamstring was feeling OK until he ramped up his running drills recently and began to feel it again.

The Brewers said the hamstring injury was diagnosed Monday be team physician William Raasch and confirmed Tuesday by Miami Marlins medical director Lee Kaplan.  Brewers assistant general manager Gord Ash said Lucroy’s agent called with news of the injury but did not specify exactly how Lucroy suffered it. List of Brewers headed for WBC is growing (VIDEO)

January 16, 2013 By Bill Scott

Right handed pitcher Yovani Gallardo and catcher Martin Maldonado are the latest Milwaukee Brewers committed to playing in the World Baseball Classic this spring.

Gallardo will play for Mexico and Maldonado will play for Puerto Rico.

A total of seven Brewers now have committed to the WBC.  Outfielder Ryan Braun and catcher Jonathan Lucroy were first added to Team USA’s roster.  A short time later, relievers John Axford and Jim Henderson, along with infielder Taylor Green will play for Team Canada.

With Lucroy and Maldonado playing in the WBC, the Brewers will be missing their top two catchers for a few weeks during spring training.

WRN contributor Justin Hull from WSCO/WHBY Radio in Appleton discussed Brewers and the WBC with Brewers assistant general manager Gord Ash on Tuesday night at the Red Smith Sports Banquet.
