Borseth claims career win #700

Green Bay Phoenix women’s basketball coach Kevin Borseth reached a coaching milestone, winning his 700th career game.  The Phoenix knocked off Youngstown State 60-42 as Borseth became the 29th coach in NCAA history to reach the milestone.

The Phoenix (9-6, 4-1) held YSU (12-5, 4-2) to less than 10 points in multiple quarters.

Seniors Jen Wellnitz and Laken James scored 17 points apiece and combined for 10 steals.

Kohler native Madison Wolf had 10 points and 12 rebounds for the first double-double of her career.

Green Bay travels to Detroit on Thursday followed by a trip to Oakland on Saturday.

Green Bay women advance to Horizon League title game

The 22nd-ranked Green Bay Phoenix (28-3) women knocked off Youngstown State 66-45 in Monday’s semifinals of the Horizon League Tournament in Detroit.

Green Bay trailed 28-26 at halftime but outscored the Penguins 21-5 in the third quarter and 40-17 in the second half.  The Phoenix shot 58.6% from the field in the final 20 minutes.

With the win, Green Bay has now won 10-straight HL tournament games and also won its 10th-straight game over the Penguins (16-15) in the process. [Read more…]

Green Bay Phoenix to play for another Horizon League title tonight

The Green Bay Phoenix women knocked off rival Milwaukee 66-59 on Monday at Joe Louis Arena, advancing to the Horizon League women’s title game against Detroit today.

Sophomore guard Jen Wellnitz had 15 points, seven rebounds, six assists and four steals in 32 minutes to lead the Phoenix.  Teammate Jessica Lindstrom added 15 points and 12 rebounds for Green Bay.

Steph Kostowicz had 16 points to lead the Panthers (20-11).

The Phoenix (26-5) entered the tournament after winning their 19th straight regular season league title.  They’re playing in their 7th straight Horizon League Championship game.  Green Bay is 14-4 all-time in conference tournament title games.

Today’s title game in Detroit tips off at 11 a.m.
