Philbin & Dolphins headed for “Hard Knocks”

May 30, 2012 By Bill Scott

Joe Philbin

Just when you thought you knew somebody.

Joe Philbin, during his stay with the Green Bay Packers, has been a no-nonsense coach.  He took over the head coaching job with the Miami Dolphins and yesterday, Philbin said “yes” to HBO’s “Hard Knocks”.

HBO announced on Tuesday that the Dolphins had agreed to become just sixth team to be featured on “Hard Knocks,” a sports reality series that started in 2001 with the Baltimore Ravens.

Training Camp for the Dolphins opens July 26th.  The first episode involving the Dolphins is set to air at 9pm on Tuesday, August 7th.

Vikings get excellent value in 1st round trade

April 26, 2012 By Bill Scott

The Minnesota Vikings were going to pick USC Tackle Matt Kahlil with the 3rd pick of the 2012 NFL Draft.

The Cleveland Browns, holding the 4th pick, feared another team moving into deal with the Vikings, so the Browns beat those teams to the punch.  The Browns sent three mid to late round draft picks to Minnesota for the right to pick Alabama running back Trent Richardson.

The Browns get their guy and the Vikings got there, plus three additional picks.  If Minnesota gets even one of those three extra picks to make their team and contribute, they win.  An easy choice for the Vikings.

It was the first of three trades in the first six picks in the draft.  Jacksonville moved into the five-spot with Tampa Bay dropping back to number 7.  Dallas moved into the six spot, trading with the St. Louis Rams.  St. Louis drops back to 14 but acquire a second round pick from the Cowboys.  Dallas picked up LSU cornerback Morris Claiborne.

Other NFC North teams, Chicago has the 19th overall pick, Detroit is at number 23 and the Green Bay Packers at number 28.

By the way, Miami, coached by former Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin, picked QB Ryan Tannehill from Texas A & M with the 8th pick in the first round.

Clements is the obvious choice at offensive coordinator

February 3, 2012 By Bill Scott

Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy named quarterbacks coach Tom Clements his new offensive coordinator, replacing Joe Philbin who left to take the head coaching job with the Miami Dolphins.

Clements has been the Packers’ quarterbacks coach for the last six seasons.  He has previous offensive coordinator experience with the Buffalo Bills in 2004-05.

The Chicago Bears tried to hire Clements away as offensive coordinator two years ago, but Mike McCarthy wouldn’t allow the Bears to talk to Clements because he was still under contract in Green Bay.

In a written statement, coach Mike McCarthy said, “Tom has been an integral part of our success and our staff, making it an obvious decision to promote him to offensive coordinator.  He has earned this opportunity, and we look forward to continued offensive success in 2012.”

Clements has played a big role in Aaron Rodgers’ development since his arrival in Green Bay some six years ago.

Sherman out of the running in Tampa Bay

January 26, 2012 By Bill Scott

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have finalized a 5-year deal with Rutgers’ coach Greg Schiano to become the teams next head coach.

Former Packers coach Mike Sherman was scheduled to meet for a second time with the Buccaneers yesterday but is out of the running.

The 45-year-old Schiano has been an assistant coach in the NFL with the Chicago Bears from 1996-98.  He’s coached the Scarlet Knights for 11 years, leading the program to winning seasons in 6 of the last 7 seasons.

The Bucs fired Raheem Morris after a 4-12 record that included 10-straight losses.

There’s a chance that Sherman could still become the offensive coordinator in Miami under new Dolphins coach Joe Philbin.

Capers, Moss, Sherman still in NFL coaching hunt

January 24, 2012 By Bill Scott

Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Dom Capers is the latest to talk with

Dom Capers

new Oakland Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie about the Raiders head coaching vacancy.

Packers linebackers coach Winston Moss has also talked with McKenzie, who is taking his time, trying to find the right man for the job.

Oregon coach Chip Kelly has pulled his name out of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers coaching search.  That means former Packers coach Mike Sherman will likely get a second interview in Tampa.

Joe Philbin’s departure for Miami means the Packers are looking for an offensive coordinator.  Many expect Mike McCarthy to promote quarterbacks coach Tom Clements from within for that job.

There could be a lot of shuffling on Mike McCarthy’s coaching staff, but the Packers coach seems to welcome the change for some of his coaches, keeping them challenged in the offense.  An example of that would be moving Edgar Bennett last season from running backs coach to his current post at wide receiver.

Philbin is still in the mix for head coaching jobs

January 17, 2012 By Bill Scott

Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin is still in the mix for the

Joe Philbin

Miami Dolphins head coaching job and is apparently drawing interest from another NFL team.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have reportedly asked permission to interview Philbin for their coaching vacancy.

It’s not clear whether Philbin will talk with the Dolphins again or meet with the Buccaneers following the drowning death of his son just over a week ago.

ESPN.com is also reporting that Tampa Bay has received permission from the Packers to interview quarterbacks coach Tom Clements this week for their head coaching job.

Moss said to be frontrunner to coach Raiders

January 12, 2012 By Bill Scott

New Oakland Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie would be looking to the Green Bay Packers to find the Raiders new head coach.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, McKenzie could look to talk to as many as four different coaches.  Packers linebackers coach Winston Moss is the reported frontrunner.

Packers secondary coach Darren Perry, quarterbacks coach Tom Clements and offensive coordinator Joe Philbin are also potential candidates.
