Stricker makes captains picks for upcoming Presidents Cup

September 7, 2017 By Bill Scott

Steve Stricker

U.S. Captain and Madison native Steve Stricker selected Phil Mickelson and Charley Hoffman as his two captains picks for the upcoming Presidents Cup.

Mickelson was in danger of missing his first Presidents Cup or Ryder Cup since 1993.  He hadn’t played well this year, but Stricker gave Mickelson until the very end to prove himself and that he did.  Mickelson shot all four rounds in the 60’s last weekend at the Dell Technologies Championship in Boston and tied for 6th.

Hoffman finished a fraction of a point out of the top 10 automatic qualifiers in the final week and will be playing in his first team competition for the United States.

International Captain Nick Price picked Emiliano Grillo and Anirban Lahiri as his two captains choices.

The National Liberty Golf Club in Jersey City, New Jersey will play host to the Presidents Cup September 28 through Oct. 1.  The United States captured the last Presidents Cup competition, 15.5 to 14.5 back in 2015.

Stricker set to tee off with Mickelson at U.S. Open

June 9, 2017 By Bill Scott

Steve Stricker

Six-time U.S. Open runner-up Phil Mickelson is expected to withdraw from the U.S. Open to attend his daughter’s high school graduation in Carlsbad, California.  The ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, June 15, the same day as the opening round of the 2017 U.S. Open.

But Mickelson still hasn’t withdrawn, so he was included in the list of tee times for the first two days of the upcoming major at Erin Hills.

Mickelson is listed with Madison’s Steve Stricker and Stewart Cink, scheduled to tee off at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday and then again at 8:35 a.m. Friday on hole number 10.

Jordan Niebrugge of Mequon is the only other Wisconsin golfer in the U.S. Open field and will tee off on the first tee at 6:45 a.m. Thursday.  His second round will start at 12:30 p.m. on Friday.

Dustin Johnson is the defending U.S. Open champion.  He’ll tee off with a pair of former champions, Jordan Spieth and Martin Kaymer at 8:35 a.m. Thursday and 2:30 p.m. on Friday.

Edgerton’s Steve Stricker was cruising along Royal Troon in Scotland on Friday, logging par after par in the wind and the rain. He finished with 17 of them; however, the one that was missing may have cost him a chance at the Claret Jug.

Stricker hit two errant tee shots, and after hacking through the high grass, carded a quadruple bogey eight on the 15th hole. It dropped him from four under to even par for the tournament, and from a tie for sixth place to a tie for 27th.

The 49-year old Stricker is playing in his first major of the year and at the Open for the first time since 2013.

He opened with a four-under 67 on Thursday, and is now ten shots back of leader Phil Mickelson heading into Saturday’s third round, which is already underway. Stricker hit the links course at 6:15 AM CT.

Meanwhile, Mequon’s Jordan Niebrugge went five-over 76 on Friday and missed the cut by two strokes with a 36 hole total of plus six.

Niebrugge tied for sixth at the 2015 Open Championship, winning the silver medal as the low amateur.

Weekend television coverage can be found on NBC.

21-year-old Jordan Spieth took his place among the best in the game by winning the Masters on Sunday at Augusta, Georgia.

Spieth lost a bid to become the youngest Masters champion a year ago.  This time Spieth led wire-to-wire, becoming the first to do so since Raymond Floyd last to pull it off in 1976.

Spieth never let anyone get closer to him than three shots after his record start.  He closed with a 2-under-par 70 on Sunday.

Phil Mickelson and Justin Rose both tried to make a final day run.  But neither could put enough heat on Spieth to really threaten him.  Mickelson and Rose finished tied for second.  It’s the 10th time that Mickelson has been runner-up in a major.

World #1 Rory McIlroy fired a 4-under par 67 and takes a one shot lead to the third round of the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky.

The 25-year-old McIlroy is trying to win his third straight tournament.  He takes a one-stroke lead over Australian Jason Day and Jim Furyk into the third round and is two shots in front of Rickie Fowler, Ryan Palmer and Mikko Ilonen of Finland.

McIlroy said his goal for the weekend is to try to put as much distance between him and his pursuers as he possibly could.

It’s a crowded field though.  Fifteen players are within four shots of the lead, including 2005 PGA champion Phil Mickelson, who climbed into a tie for seventh with a 67.  Madison’s Steve Stricker shot a 3-under par 68 who stands with Mickelson at 5-under.

Day shot the low round of the day (65).  He’s looking for his first major victory.  Day’s tied for fourth at the U.S. Open in June. [Read more…]
