Baldwin staying home to play for dad at UW-Milwaukee

May 12, 2021 By Bill Scott

Five-star recruit Patrick Baldwin Jr. (Sussex, WI), announced on Wednesday that he is staying home to play college basketball for his dad at UW-Milwaukee.

The 6’9 senior forward made his choice known on ESPN, choosing the Panthers over finalists Duke and Georgetown among others.

Baldwin is ranked as the No. 4 player in the 2021 class by both ESPN and Rivals.  He’s expected to play just one season of college basketball before heading to the NBA.

Baldwin averaged 16.3 points at Hamilton as a freshman, 19 points a game as a sophomore and 24.3 points, 10.8 rebounds and 4.2 assists as a junior.  His senior season ended early because of a high ankle sprain in Hamilton’s second game of the season.

It might be for just one season, but Wednesday’s announcement will no doubt excite Panther fans into buying more tickets to the team’s games next season.

Badger women’s soccer to open NCAA tournament at home

November 11, 2019 By Bill Scott

The Wisconsin women’s soccer team earned a No. 3 seed in the 2019 NCAA Women’s Soccer Tournament and will host in-state rival Milwaukee in a Friday-night clash at the McClimon Soccer Complex.

The Badgers (14-3-2) and Panthers (17-1-1) will meet in a 5 p.m. battle in Madison as the winner will advance to play the winner of Duke and Utah in the second round of the NCAA tournament.

The 2019 Big Ten Regular Season Champions, UW went unbeaten in conference play.  The Badgers are led by Big Ten Forward of the Year Dani Rhodes, who paces the team with 11 goals, while Big Ten Defender of the Year Camryn Biegalski and Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Year Jordyn Bloomer lead the defense that has allowed only 10 goals in 19 games this year.

The Badgers are making their fourth-straight trip to the big dance and the program’s 22nd appearance in the NCAA tournament.  UW has won its last three first-round games and made it to the NCAA Sweet 16 last year.

Panthers fall to 0-3 with loss in Miami

November 14, 2018 By Bill Scott

The UW-Milwaukee men’s basketball team dropped to 0-3, falling 86-83 to Florida International on Tuesday night in Miami.

Osasumwen Osaghae’s three-point play with 11 seconds left to play won it for Florida International.  Osaghae scored in the paint and drew a foul, making the free throw for the three-point win.

Darius Roy’s three-point attempt at the buzzer failed as the Panthers tried to force overtime.  Roy led the Panthers with 19 points in the loss.

The Panthers led 50-44 at halftime, thanks to some solid shooting from distance, but they hit just 1 of 8 three-point attempts in the second half.

Brian Beard Jr. had 19 points to lead Florida International in the win.

UW-Milwaukee loses three top players

April 24, 2018 By Bill Scott

Just when it appeared UW-Milwaukee had steadied their ship in men’s basketball, the Panthers are losing three more players.

Junior guards Brock Stull and Jeremiah Bell, along with sophomore forward Bryce Nze, had all requested and been granted their release from the program, looking to transfer elsewhere.

The program had already lost a pair of sophomore scholarship guards (August Haas and Jeremy Johnson) in March, which means the Panthers have five scholarship players who have left the program.

If that isn’t enough, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported a source saying, three of the top four players Milwaukee signed in the early signing period last fall, have also asked to be released from their national letters of intent.  Rosiak was the first to report the Milwaukee departures.

The players cited a number of reasons for leaving, including the program’s instability.  Current head coach Pat Baldwin is the third coach in three years.

The Panthers finished 16-17 last season, finishing fifth in the Horizon League with an 8-10 record.

Jeter joins Gophers coaching staff

April 11, 2018 By Bill Scott

Rob Jeter

Former Wisconsin assistant and Milwaukee Panther head coach Rob Jeter is joining the Minnesota Gophers coaching staff.

Gophers coach Richard Pitino announced Tuesday that Jeter will replace Kimani Young, who left for Connecticut to be an assistant coach there.

Jeter spent the last two seasons in Las Vegas as an assistant at UNLV.  He coached the Milwaukee Panthers for 11 seasons.  Jeter was also an assistant to Bo Ryan for four years at Wisconsin.  He played for Ryan at UW-Platteville.

The Gophers are coming off a 15-17 season and return just five scholarship players who saw action this past season.

UW-Milwaukee pulls upset in Ames, Iowa

November 14, 2017 By Bill Scott

Expectations from outside of the UW-Milwaukee men’s basketball locker room are small, but the Panthers pulled off a big upset on Monday night.

Brock Stull scored 17 points to lead the Panthers to a 74-56 victory over Iowa State as the Cyclones suffered their first defeat in a home opener in 20 years.

Brett Prahl scored 14 points and Bryce Nze added 13 as the Panthers improved to 2-0, despite being picked to finish eighth in the 10-team Horizon League.

Milwaukee led 39-32 at halftime and widened the gap when the Cyclones struggled from the field even more in the second half.  Iowa State (0-2) made just 5 of 20 from the field in the second half and went 0 of 8 from three-point range.

Panthers searching for new basketball coach again

June 13, 2017 By Bill Scott

After just one season on the job in Milwaukee, head men’s basketball coach LaVall Jordan is leaving, agreeing to become the next head coach at Butler University.

The Butler job opened up last week when Chris Holtmann left to take the head job at Ohio State.

Jordan played guard for the Bulldogs from 1998-2001 and later spent four years on the coaching staff, including three as an assistant from 2004-’07.

Jordan came to Milwaukee after spending six seasons as an assistant at the University of Michigan.  His inexperienced and undermanned squad finished 8-23 overall in the regular-season.  Their 4-14 Horizon League record was the worst in the 10-team conference.

The Panthers did win three games in the Horizon League Tournament, knocking off seventh-seeded Detroit, second-seeded Valparaiso and sixth-seeded Illinois-Chicago to reach the title game.  They lost that title game, 59-53 to Northern Kentucky, missing out on a chance at an improbable NCAA Tournament berth to finish the season 11-24.

Jordan was one year into a five-year deal that paid him $350,000 annually.  His buyout will be $700,000, which is half of the remaining value of his contract.

Milwaukee Panthers logoBig Ten Player of the Year Rachel Banham poured in 48 points on Wednesday night, leading the Minnesota Gophers to a 87-80 win over the UW-Milwaukee Panthers in the opening round of the WNIT at Williams Arena.

The Panthers led by one-point at halftime, but Banham went to work in the second half, scoring 35 of her 48 points.  Twenty-three of those points came in the third quarter as Banham hit 18 of 33 from the field and nine-of-10 from the free throw line to set a WNIT scoring record.  Banham has now scored 40 or more points three times this season for the Gophers (20-11).

Steph Kostowicz scored 30 points on 12-of-15 shooting for the Panthers (19-13).

The Panthers played in a postseason tournament game for the first time in 10 years.
