Seven Badgers honored by the WCHA

Seven members of the 2nd-ranked Wisconsin women’s hockey team were honored by the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) on Wednesday.

Forwards Sophie Shirley and Daryl Watts along with defenseman Grace Bowlby were named 1st Team All-Conference.  Junior defenseman  Nicole LaMantia was named to the All-WCHA 2nd Team.  Senior forward Brette Pettet, Junior forward Britta Curl and Senior goaltender Kennedy Blair were named to the All-WCHA 3rd team.

Watts finished the regular season with 31 points on 15 goals and 16 assists in 16 games.  She boasts the most points per game and goals per game of any player in the NCAA who played more than two games.

Shirley posted the third-most points in the WCHA, tallying nine goals and 13 assists for 22 points.

Bowlby held the scoring lead among defensemen with 15 points, with 15 assists, which ranked second among all WCHA skaters.

Wisconsin heads to Minneapolis to get the postseason started this weekend.  UW is the top-seed and will face Minnesota in the WCHA semifinals on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Top-ranked Wisconsin captures second straight WCHA regular season title

The WCHA women’s regular season title chase went right down to the wire in Duluth, Mn., on Saturday.

The top-ranked Wisconsin Badgers fell to the Bulldogs on Friday and then needing a win, fell behind 3-1 on Saturday before rallying for a 4-3 overtime victory.  The win gave the Badgers their second straight WCHA regular season title.

National Player of the Year candidate Daryl Watts scored twice, including the game winner 41 seconds into the extra session.

Wisconsin is the number-one seed for the WCHA Final Faceoff this weekend in Minneapolis and will play the Minnesota Gophers in the semifinals Saturday at 1 p.m.  The title game is set for Sunday at 2 p.m.

Top-ranked Badger women get a win and a tie at Minnesota

The top-ranked Wisconsin Badgers and second-ranked Gophers went to overtime for the second straight game, skating to a 2-2 draw in Saturday’s series finale.

Sophie Shirley and Maddi Wheeler scored goals for the Badgers (9-2-1, 9-2-1-1-1 WCHA) but were unable to hold onto a two-goal lead against the Golden Gophers (9-5-1, 9-5-1-1 WCHA).

The Gophers scored the game-tying goal late in the third period.  After a scoreless 3-on-3 overtime session, Minnesota earned the extra point in the WCHA standings with a 1-0 win in the shootout.

Wisconsin is now unbeaten in its last sox games against Minnesota with a 5-0-1 record against the Golden Gophers.  Kennedy Blair made 27 saves for the Badgers in the tie.

UW returns home for its final home series of the 2020-21 season as the Badgers welcome Bemidji State to LaBahn Arena on Friday and Saturday (2 p.m. CT each day).

Top-ranked Wisconsin women’s hockey edges No. 2 Minnesota in OT

The top-ranked Wisconsin women’s hockey team rallied from a two-goal deficit in the third period to knock off No. 2 Minnesota, 4-3, in overtime on Friday night at Ridder Arena.

Senior Daryl Watts scored twice, including the game-winning goal in OT to lead the Badgers (9-2-0, 8-2-1-1 WCHA) to their fifth-straight win against the Golden Gophers (9-5-0, 9-4-0-1 WCHA).  Senior Caitlin Schneider and junior Britta Curl also scored in the come-from-behind win.

The Badgers found themselves in a 2-0 hole for the first time since Nov. 27, 2020, as Minnesota tacked on goals in the middle of the first and second periods.  But UW bounced back as Watts went coast-to-coast before beating Lauren Bench top shelf to cut the deficit to one with 3:08 left in the second period.

The Gophers scored early in the third, but UW’s Schneider scored halfway through the final frame to close the gap to one.  With just over 35 seconds left, UW pulled goaltender Kennedy Blair and Curl took a feed from Watts to tie the game at 3-3.

Wisconsin’s Mark Johnson named WCHA 1970’s Player of the Decade

One of the top scorers in the WCHA’s highest-scoring decade, Wisconsin’s Mark Johnson has been named the Western Collegiate Hockey Association Player of the Decade for the 1970’s.

Johnson, who was named to the WCHA’s All-Decade Team earlier this week, finished his three-year career with 256 points (125g-131a) in 125 career games with the Badgers, an average of 85 points per season.  His career points total ranks No. 11 in league history while his goal total is No. 6 all-time and his assist total is tied for 24th in WCHA history.

Johnson played for his father, the late Bob Johnson, during his three seasons in Madison.  He captured WCHA Freshman of the Year honors in 1976-77 as Wisconsin won its first NCAA Championship with a 37-7-1 record.  Johnson tallied 80 points on 36 goals and 44 assists in his rookie campaign.  He earned the first of two All-America and All-WCHA honors as a sophomore, netting 86 points on 48 goals and 38 assists and sharing WCHA Scoring Champion honors with 70 points in [Read more…]

No. 2 Wisconsin women’s hockey sweep’s No. 1 Minnesota

The second-ranked Wisconsin women’s hockey team completed a statement sweep of No. 1 Minnesota with a 6-3 win on Saturday afternoon at LaBahn Arena.

For the second-straight season, the Badgers (6-2-0, 6-2-0-1 WCHA) earned a series sweep over the golden Gophers (8-2-0, 8-3-0-0 WCHA) in Madison.  Wisconsin improved to 8-3-1 against the Gophers in the last 12 meetings between the two rivals.

Brette Pettet and Daryl Watts each scored two goals for UW, while Lacey Eden and Britta Curl also found the back of the net for the Badgers.

The Badgers scored 11 goals against Minnesota this weekend, marking the most scored in the series by UW in school history.  The previous best was 10 goals, which the Badgers tallied against the Gophers back on Nov. 5-6, 2010.

The Badgers head to St. Cloud State on January 22 and 23.  Friday puck drop is set for 3 p.m. and Saturday will start at 2 p.m.

No. 2 Badgers blank top-ranked Gophers in women’s hockey

The second-ranked Wisconsin women’s hockey team earned a statement win on Friday afternoon, blanking the top-ranked Minnesota Gophers 5-0 at LaBahn Arena.

Sophie Shirley, Dara Greig, Britta Curl, Daryl Watts and Makenna Webster each scored for the Badgers (5-2-0), snapping the Golden Gophers’ (8-2-0) seven-game winning streak.

Wisconsin scored twice in the opening period on goals from Shirley and Greig.

Curl and Watts added goals in the second period to make it 4-0 after two periods.

Webster completed the scoring one-minute into the third period as the Badgers outshot the Gophers 34-30.

The Badgers wrap up their series with Minnesota on Saturday with a 2:07 p.m. faceoff against the Gophers and can be seen live on Fox Sports Wisconsin.

Top-Ranked Badger women split with #4 Ohio State

After earning a victory in the series opener on Friday, the top-ranked Wisconsin women’s hockey team fell to #4 Ohio State 2-1 in overtime on Saturday to split their two-game series with the Buckeyes at LaBahn Arena.

Senior Daryl Watts scored the lone Badger goal in the third period to tie the score 1-1 and eventually send the teams to overtime.

Ohio State scored halfway through the 3-on-3 overtime thanks to a goal from Liz Schepers to take two of a possible three points in the WCHA standings.

Kennedy Blair made a UW-career  high 37 saves during the overtime contest.

With the win on Friday, the Badgers took the season series with the Buckeyes, earning seven of a possible 12-points.

Wisconsin wraps up its homestand with a Border Battle against No. 2 Minnesota next weekend.  Puck drop on both Jan. 15 and 16 is set for 2 p.m. and the games can be seen live on Big Ten Plus.

Top ranked Badger women edge Ohio State in series opener

The top-ranked Wisconsin Badger women’s hockey team scored a pair of third period goals to knock off number-4 Ohio State, 2-1, on Friday afternoon at LaBahn Arena.

Senior Daryl Watts and junior Nicole LaMantia scored at 9:29 and 13:39 in the final period to give the Badgers (4-1-0  4-1-0-0 WCHA) their first home win of the season.

Neither team was able to dent the scoreboard in the first period.  Ohio State (4-3-0, 4-3-0-0 WCHA) finally found the net in the second period on a Paetyn Levis tally.

Wisconsin’s Kennedy Blair, the reigning WCHA Goaltender of the Week, stopped 28 of the 29 shots she faced to earn her fourth win as a Badger.

UW remains perfect on the penalty kill this year, killing all 11 of its penalties.

The Badgers wrap up the series with Ohio State on Saturday with a none game at LaBahn Arena.

Badger Women’s Hockey Sweeps Minnesota State

Senior co-captain Brette Pettet’s late third period goal gave the No. 1 Wisconsin women’s hockey team a 1-0 win at Minnesota State on Sunday afternoon, giving the Badgers (3-1-0, 3-1-0-0 WCHA) a sweep of the two-game weekend series.

It’s the second goal of the young season for Pettet.

The Mavericks (2-7-1, 2-7-1-0 WCHA) lost for the seventh time this season.

Kennedy Blair stopped all 21 shots to earn her second shutout of the season.  The Badgers held MSU scoreless on all four of their power-play chances Sunday.  UW has now killed all nine of its penalties during the 2020-21 season.

Wisconsin will play its first home games of the 2020-21 season when they welcome Ohio State to LaBahn Arena this Friday and Saturday.
