Marquette ends 3-game slide, sweeps Butler

February 18, 2021 By Bill Scott

The Marquette Golden Eagles ended a 3-game losing streak with their most complete victory of the season, a 73-57 win over Butler in Big East Conference action on Wednesday night in Indianapolis.

Having dropped six of their last seven games, Marquette coach Steve Wojciechowski tried to shake things up with a lineup change, inserting Greg Elliott into the starting lineup and it worked.  Elliott led the Golden Eagles with 17 points and 6 rebounds to lead the way.  Jamal Cain came off the bench but still played 33 minutes and finished with 14 points and 14 rebounds.

Marquette (10-12, 6-10 Big East) completed a 2-game season series sweep over the Bulldogs, having won 70-67 earlier this month at Fiserv Forum.

Theo John added 15 points and six rebounds for Marquette.  Bryce golden led Butler (7-12, 6-10) with 18 points.

Marquette gets some time off, not scheduled to play again until Feb. 27th at UConn, although it’s possible the Golden Eagles could add a non-conference game between now and then.

Koby McEwen made a layup with 27 seconds left and Theo John had a big block in the closing seconds to league the Marquette Golden Eagles to a 73-71 win over St. John’s in Big East action on Saturday.

After McEwen’s drive down the left side of the lane, John swatted Vince Cole’s drive.  The Red Storm got the ball back but a desperation 3 at the buzzer was off the mark.

D.J. Carton had 14 points to lead the Golden Eagles (8-6, 4-4 Big East Conference).  Greg Elliott and Justin Lewis added 13 points and freshman Dawson Garcia added 11 points.

Julian Champagnie had 20 points for the Red Storm (7-7, 2-6).

The Golden Eagles held off the Red Storm for their first win at Carnesecca since 2015-16.

Marquette Opens Big East With Win At Creighton

December 15, 2020 By Bill Scott

Steve Wojciechowski

D.J. Carton scored a career-high 20 points, and Greg Elliott and Dawson Garcia combined for 23 of their 28 in the second half to lead the Marquette Golden Eagles to a 89-84 road upset over No. 9 Creighton to open Big East Conference play on Monday night.

The Golden Eagles (5-2, 1-0 Big East) came from 12-points down to beat the Blue Jays (4-2, 0-1).

Mitch Ballock hit 8 of his 13 three-pointers and scored a season-high 26 points to lead Creighton.  Denzel Mahoney added 21 points.

The Golden Eagles beat the 2019-20 Big East regular-season co-champions for the first time in four meetings.

The Blue Jays ran off nine straight points to get to 76-75 but Carton hit a three and Dawson Garcia added a jumper and a put back basket to make it 83-75.

Creighton would again cut the Marquette lead to three and Carton missed a free throw but the Golden Eagles kept possession on a tie-up under the basket.  Koby McEwen then made a pair of free throws for an 85-80 lead with 30 seconds left.

Creighton didn’t do themselves any favors at the free throw line, hitting just 11 of 22 in the second half and finished 14 of 25 (56%) for the game.  Marquette held Creighton to 44% shooting from the field in the second half and outscored the Blue Jays 54-40 in the second half.

The Golden Eagles return home to host Seton Hall in their Big East home opener on Thursday night at Fiserv Forum.
