Reds power past Brewers

August 25, 2013 By Bill Scott

The Cincinnati Reds clubbed four home runs and banged out 14 hits on their way to a 6-3 win over the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday.  The Reds evened the series at 1-1 and now have won 13 of their last 18 games overall.

Ryan Ludwick clubbed his first home run since last October and Zach Cozard had a tie breaking 2-run shot.  Chris Heisey also clubbed a solo home run and Joey Votto added his 19th homer of the season.

Wily Peralta didn’t have his slider, which is his best pitch of late.  But he battled to keep the Brewers in the game, leaving with a 2-1 lead.  But the bullpen couldn’t hold it.  Ludwick and Cozart’s homers came off of John Axford (6-7) and Votto’s was served up by Michael Gonzalez.

Khris Davis drove in the Brewers’ first run with a double in the second.  That, after clubbing 2 home runs in the series opener on Friday night.

What will the Brewers do before the deadline?

July 31, 2013 By Bill Scott

Major League Baseball teams have until 3pm CST Thursday to make deals in advance of this year’s non-waiver trade deadline.

It will be an interesting few hours leading up to the deadline for the Milwaukee Brewers.  For weeks, a handful of names have bounced in-and-out of trade rumors.   A lot of the “heavy” interest appeared to be for OF Norichika Aoki and starting pitchers Kyle Lohse and Yovani Gallardo.  However, General Manager Doug Melvin told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel Tuesday that the team would likely keep all three.

That doesn’t mean the Brewers will have no one to work with.  Relief pitchers John Axford and Michael Gonzalez have had their names bounced around the rumor mills but recent struggles could effect that.  Also, 2B Rickie Weeks has reportedly garnered some interest from the Kansas City Royals.  It Week were to be moved, it is likely the Brewers would have to pick up a big chunk of his remaining salary.  Aramis Ramirez could still find a new zip code by seasons end.  The oft injured 3B is currently out of action but could be sent in a waiver deal once he returns. The waiver deadline is at the end of August.  Players have to clear waivers in order to make a deal making it more difficult to work trade than the July deadline.

Milwaukee has already made one move.  Last week they sent closer Francisco Rodriguez to the Baltimore Orioles for prospect Nicky Delmonico.

Brewers send Rodriguez to Baltimore (AUDIO)

July 24, 2013 By Bill Scott

With the July 31st non-waiver trade deadline approaching, the Milwaukee Brewers have seen their name surface in a number of rumors.  One of those names was Francisco Rodriguez, and Tuesday he was traded.

The Brewers sent Rodriguez to the Baltimore Orioles for 3B prospect Nick Delmonico.  After the worse season of his 12-year career in 2012,  K-Rod has been able to bounce back.  Without a team to begin the season, Rodriguez signed a minor league deal with the Brewers that gave him a month to make it to the big leagues.  He did just that and has posted a 1.05 ERA with a perfect 10 for 10 run in save opportunities for the Brewers.  General Manager Doug Melvin was determined to make a move Tuesday…

without one, then they had to hold on for their first victory in nearly a week, a 4-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium.

After John Axford lost his closers spot, the Brewers used Jim Henderson in the eighth inning on Sunday, trying to keep the game within reach.  The Brewers trailed 3-2 at the time.

After the Brewers tied the game 3-3 in the 9th, Ron Roenicke went to Brandon Kintzler  and that moved worked out well, with Kintzler working a 1-2-3 frame.  Kintzler came back out for the 10th and walked the leadoff man (David Freese) and Jon Jay punted him to second. [Read more…]

runs on the board in the 8th, 9th and 10th innings yesterday to come from behind and beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-3 in 10-innings.

Jonathan Lucroy’s 10th-inning home run turned out to be the game winner, but Lucroy’s heroics wouldn’t have come had it not been for Ryan Braun’s 2-run homer in the 8th inning.
