What will the Brewers do before the deadline?

July 31, 2013 By Bill Scott

Major League Baseball teams have until 3pm CST Thursday to make deals in advance of this year’s non-waiver trade deadline.

It will be an interesting few hours leading up to the deadline for the Milwaukee Brewers.  For weeks, a handful of names have bounced in-and-out of trade rumors.   A lot of the “heavy” interest appeared to be for OF Norichika Aoki and starting pitchers Kyle Lohse and Yovani Gallardo.  However, General Manager Doug Melvin told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel Tuesday that the team would likely keep all three.

That doesn’t mean the Brewers will have no one to work with.  Relief pitchers John Axford and Michael Gonzalez have had their names bounced around the rumor mills but recent struggles could effect that.  Also, 2B Rickie Weeks has reportedly garnered some interest from the Kansas City Royals.  It Week were to be moved, it is likely the Brewers would have to pick up a big chunk of his remaining salary.  Aramis Ramirez could still find a new zip code by seasons end.  The oft injured 3B is currently out of action but could be sent in a waiver deal once he returns. The waiver deadline is at the end of August.  Players have to clear waivers in order to make a deal making it more difficult to work trade than the July deadline.

Milwaukee has already made one move.  Last week they sent closer Francisco Rodriguez to the Baltimore Orioles for prospect Nicky Delmonico.

Axford takes the loss as Brewers fall in Colorado (AUDIO)

July 29, 2013 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers wrapped up the first leg of their six-game road trip with a 6-5 loss to the Colorado Rockies Sunday afternoon.

Milwaukee had a 5-4 lead going into the 8th inning before giving the ball to the recently sure handed John Axford.  The last time Axford picked up a loss was on May 1st.  Since then, he had worked his ERA from 10.32 down to 3.38 and had a stretch of 33-scoreless outings in 36-appearences.  Sunday,  Axford fell to 4-4 on the year by allowing consecutive doubles to Troy Tulowitzki and Michael Cuddyer as part of a 2-run 8th inning for Colorado.

Brewers send Rodriguez to Baltimore (AUDIO)

July 24, 2013 By Bill Scott

With the July 31st non-waiver trade deadline approaching, the Milwaukee Brewers have seen their name surface in a number of rumors.  One of those names was Francisco Rodriguez, and Tuesday he was traded.

The Brewers sent Rodriguez to the Baltimore Orioles for 3B prospect Nick Delmonico.  After the worse season of his 12-year career in 2012,  K-Rod has been able to bounce back.  Without a team to begin the season, Rodriguez signed a minor league deal with the Brewers that gave him a month to make it to the big leagues.  He did just that and has posted a 1.05 ERA with a perfect 10 for 10 run in save opportunities for the Brewers.  General Manager Doug Melvin was determined to make a move Tuesday…

Lohse pitches Brewers to win over Washington

July 4, 2013 By Bill Scott

In his best outing of the season, Kyle Lohse worked 8-strong innings to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to a 4-1 win over the Washington Nationals on Wednesday night.

Lohse allowed a single run on 4-hits with just 1 walk.  He threw 103 pitches and set the Nationals down in order in five of his eight innings.

The Brewers broke through offensively in the 5th.  Sean Halton led off with a double and Logan Schafer singled and moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt.  Norichika Aoki’s single to center drove in Halton and Schafer.

Schafer added a 2-run triple in the 6th inning to add some insurance runs for the Brewers, who won their second straight.

Francisco Rodriguez worked the 9th for his 301st career save.  That moves him into 23rd place all-time.  Rodriguez needs three more to move past former Brewer Doug Jones and into 22nd place.

The Brewers and Nationals close out their 4-game series this morning (10am) at Nationals Park.  Donovan Hand (0-1, 2.63) gets the starting nod for the Brewers.  Taylor Jordan (0-1, 2.08) gets the call for Washington.

Weeks lifts Brewers to victory

June 20, 2013 By Bill Scott

Rickie Weeks connected on two-run home-run in the 8th inning Wednesday night to help lift the Brewers to a 3-1 victory over the Astros.

With Norichika Aoki out on paternity leave, Weeks was slotted in the lead-off spot in the lineup.  He came through with his 6th homer of the year and added another hit for a 2 for 4 night.  He is now batting .406 in the month of June, after being put in a platoon with Scooter Gennett because of a .186 average the first two months of the season.

Aramis Ramirez added a solo homer in the 9th, his 9th of the season.

May 14, 2013 By Bill Scott

After a couple of poor outings, Marco Estrada turned in a solid performance on Monday night.  Estrada allowed just 3-hits through 7-innings and pitched the Milwaukee Brewers to a 5-1 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park.

The Brewers put a halt to their 4-game losing streak and it was a big turn-around for Estrada, who coughed up 8-runs on 6-hits in a loss to the Cardinals on May 5th.

It’s all in the way the wind blows!

April 9, 2013 By Bill Scott

Monday was not a normal April day in Chicago.  Normally the wind at Wrigley Field

Ryan Braun

Ryan Braun

is blowing in and the temperatures are low.  Yesterday, with the wind blowing out and the temperatures respectable, the Milwaukee Brewers scored 4-runs in the 1st inning and held off the Cubs 7-4.

The wind that helped the Brewers get the lead, changed directions late and helped them pull out the win.  With the bases loaded full of Cubs, Starlin Castro’s 2-out drive would have at the very least, hit the wall with the wind blowing out.  But blowing in, Castro’s drive turned in to a fly ball out and Jim Henderson earned his first save of the season. It is not clear on when exactly Lohse will be ready to go at full strength.  He had been pitching simulated games while he was a free agent to stay on top of things.  Lohse expressed a hope to pitch in Milwaukee’s second regular season series, next weekend again Arizona.  Manager Ron Roenicke and Pitching Coach Rick Kranitz are taking a more wait and see approach…

Aoki leads Brewers past Braves

September 11, 2012 By Bill Scott

Norichika Aoki threw out Braves runner at 3rd base, then added a 2-run double to key a four-run seventh inning, leading the Milwaukee Brewers to a 4-1 victory over Atlanta.

The Brewers sent 10 batters to the plate in the seventh inning, doing all of their damage with 2-hits and a sacrifice fly.

The Brewers have now won 16 of 21 games and it puts them 5-games behind the St. Louis Cardinals for the second NL wildcard spot.

The Cardinals lost last night 11-3 at San Diego.  The Phillies also won last night and they’re tied with the Brewers.  Philadelphia has won 13 of their last 17 games.

John Axford worked the ninth for his 28th save, including his last 10.

Marco Estrada (2-6, 3.99 ERA) pitches game two of the series for the Brewers.  Tim Hudson (14-5, 3.59 ERA) goes for the Braves.
