Brewers go deep on the Marlins

September 5, 2012 By Bill Scott

Playing in a ballpark that doesn’t surrender too many home runs, the Milwaukee Brewers got a pair of long balls in a 8-4 win over Miami at Marlins Park.

Two players not known for their long ball prowess, ripped shots to give the Brewers their 12th win in the last 15 games.  The Brewers remained 7 1/2 games out of the second wild-card spot in the National League with 7-games left to play.

Norichika Aoki and Jeff Bianchi both hit home runs and drove in three runs for the Brewers and Ryan Braun drove in a pair of runs to give him 98 for the season.  Two more for Braun and he’ll hit 100 rbi’s for a fifth consecutive season.

Kameron Loe gets the win and John Axford earned his 24th save for the Brewers.

Game 3 of the 4-game series is tonight.  Right handed pitcher Wily Peralta, one of four players called up on Tuesday, will make his first major league start tonight for the Brewers.

Colorado rocks Brewers again!

August 15, 2012 By Bill Scott

The Colorado Rockies jumped on Milwaukee Brewers starter Randy Wolf for 4-runs in the first inning and held on for a 8-6 win at Coors Field last night.

For the second straight night, the Rockies banged out 15-hits on their way to victory.  Carlos Gonzalez led the way with 4-hits and Eric Young Jr. homered for the Rockies.

Tyler Chatwood also pitched six effective innings for Colorado.  He allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 4 hits before giving way to the Rockies bullpen.

The Brewers made it interesting late, scoring 3 runs in the 9th inning.  Rockies reliever Rafael Betancourt was able to get Rickie Weeks to pop out and Ryan Braun to fly out to end it.

Mark Rogers pitches the series finale for the Brewers this afternoon.

Marlins Shutout the Brewers (Audio)

July 5, 2012 By Bill Scott

Mark Buehrle had the Brewers number Thursday as the (40-42) Miami Marlins blanked the (38-44) Milwaukee Brewers 4-0 at Miller Park.  The win gave Miami a split of the 4-game series.

Buehrle went 7 2/3 innings allowing just 6-hits while striking out 8-batters as his record improved to 8-8 on the season.  Michael Fiers had a solid start for Milwaukee but got nothing in the run support column.  He lasted 7 1/3 allowing 2-runs on 7-hits while striking out 9-batters but fell to 3-3 on the season.  Brewers Manager on Ron Roenicke was happy with Mike Fiers performance…

Brewers lose another late lead (AUDIO)

July 5, 2012 By Bill Scott

Brewers Closer John Axford was one strike away from notching his 15th save of the season.  Instead, Gabby Sanchez connected on a solo home run to tie the game at 6 in the 9th and the Miami Marlins went on to win 7-6 in 10-innings Wednesday at Miller Park.  Hanley Ramirez drove in the winning run in the 10th off Manny Parra.  The loss is the 9th time in the last 11-loses the  bullpen took the loss.

The Brewers seemed to have the game in hand with a 5-1 lead after 6-innings.  Starter Randy Wolf was cruising along before giving up a 4-spot in the 7th that included home runs by Justin Ruggiano and Logan Morrison.  Wolf made it through 7-innings allowing 5-runs on 6-hits but picked up his 7th no decision in his last 9-starts.  Brewers Manager Ron Roenicke explains why he left Randy Wolf in the game…

The bench comes through for the Brewers (AUDIO)

July 3, 2012 By Bill Scott

Travis Ishikawa and Nori Aoki each notched key pinch-hits as the Brewers came from behind to defeat the Miami Marlins 6-5 Monday Night at Miller Park.  The win was the 3rd straight for the Brewers who moved their record to 37-42 on the season.

After falling behind 5-2 in the 3rd inning, the Brewers began to chip away at the lead.  Carlos Gomez hit a solo homer, his 5th of the year, in the 5th inning to make it a 5-3 game.  In the 6th, Ishikawa came through with a 2-out, 2-RBI single to tie the game at 5-5.  Aoki put Milwaukee on top in the 8th with a suicide-squeeze scoring Rickie Weeks to make it 6-5.  Manager Ron Roenicke is ecstatic to have a guy like Aoki for a spot like that…

Brewers nearly no-hit, fall to Reds (AUDIO)

June 27, 2012 By Bill Scott

One night after the Milwaukee Brewers were shut down by Reds starter Matt Latos, it was Bronson Arroyo’s turn to take his shot at the Brewers.

Through 7-innings, Arroya was even better than Latos, taking a no-hit bid into the 8th inning against the Brewers.  Arroya struck out the first batter and walked  the second.  That’s when Taylor Green stepped to the plate and broke up the no-hit bid with a 1-out double.  Corey Hart followed with another double to cut the Reds lead to 3-2 before Norichka Aoki singled home the tying run to knock Arroyo out of the game.

But the Reds still won the game, 4-3 when Drew Stubbs led off the bottom of the 8th with a home run off of Brewers closer John Axford. [Read more…]

Latos dominates Brewers

June 26, 2012 By Bill Scott

The Cincinnati Reds entered Monday’s series with the Milwaukee Brewers in a slump.  They had won just one of their previous six games.  Matt Latos entered last nights game with a 5.20 ERA.  So you’re thinking the Brewers might have a decent shot to get their offense going.  Silly me!

Latos was on his game last night, striking out a career-high 13 hitters to post his second-ever complete game, leading the Reds to a 3-1 win over the Brewers.  Latos even chipped in with a pair of singles.  His teammate Jay Bruce called Latos a one-man wrecking crew.

AUDIO: Jay Bruce on Matt Latos doing it all :14

Latos was so much in command that he threw 24 consecutive strikes during one point of the game.  That kind of performance is the last thing the Brewers’ offense needed.  The struggling crew managed just 4-hits as Latos threw first pitch strikes to 27 of 33 batters and improved to 6-2 on the season. Aoki’s heroics lift Brewers in the 10th

June 8, 2012 By Bill Scott

Former Japanese batting champion Norichika Aoki clubbed a pair of home runs yesterday, the second of which led the Milwaukee Brewers to a 4-3 come-from-behind victory in 10-innings.

Aoki also hit a solo home run in the fourth inning.  His only home run this season entering yesterday’s game was an inside-the-park homer back on April 10th.

Brewers starting pitcher Randy Wolf left after 7-innings with a 2-1 lead, but reliever Francisco Rodriguez coughed up a 2-run homer to Cubs pinch hitter Bryan LaHair.

Trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the 8th, Corey Hart quickly got Rodriguez off the hook by doubling  home a run to tie the game at 3-3.

Aoki was mobbed by his teammates at home plate after hitting the game winner.  Both he and his translator received shaving cream pies in the face in a post game television interview.

The Brewers took 2 of 3 in the series from the Cubs.  They continue their home stand with a weekend series against the San Diego Padres at Miller Park.

Brewers offense: A disappearing act

May 8, 2012 By Bill Scott

Ryan Braun’s 9th home run of the season came in the 1st inning, giving the

Ron Roenicke

Brewers an early lead.  Little did everyone know that would be it for the game.

Jay Bruce hit a 3-run homer and Bronson Arroyo pitched into the 7th, leading the Cincinnati Reds to a 6-1 win over the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park on Monday night.  Bruce’s 9th homer of the season capped a 5-run fourth inning off of Marco Estrada, extending his hitting streak to 10-games.

Rockies edge Brewers in 9th

April 21, 2012 By Bill Scott

John Axford failed to hold a 3-3 tie in the 9th and the Milwaukee Brewers dropped their series opener to the Colorado Rockies 4-3 at Miller Park on Friday night.

Axford came out of the bullpen to start the 9th inning for the Brewers.  Pinch hitter Jason Giambi hit a bloop single to start the Rockies rally and was replaced by pinch runner Eric Young.  Young moved to second on a pickoff throwing error by Axford, then took 3rd on a flyout.  Michael Cuddyer came on as a pinch hitter and singled up the middle to drive in the game winning run for the Rockies.

Matt Belisle earned the win for Colorado and Rafael Betancourt pitched the ninth for his fourth save.  Rockies starter Jhoulys Chacin went seven innings, giving up three runs and four hits with a walk and six strikeouts.  He also had an RBI single in the fourth. [Read more…]
