Nine former Packers on Pro Football Hall of Fame nominees list

September 17, 2020 By Bill Scott

Charles Woodson

The Pro Football Hall of Fame announced a total of 130 modern-era nominees for the 2021 class on Wednesday.  That list includes a total of nine former Green Bay Packers.

Safety LeRoy Butler, who was a finalist last year, is on the ballot again this year, while Charles Woodson is one of 14 first-year nominees.

Woodson played 18 years in the NFL.  Seven of those seasons came in Green Bay, where he helped the Packers win the 2010 Super Bowl.  During his time with the Packers, Woodson registered 38 interceptions and 11.5 quarterback sacks.

The other former Packers on the list of nominees are:  WR Donald Driver (1999-2012), kicker Ryan Longwell (1997-2005), TE Keith Jackson (1995-96), TE Wesley Walls (2003), safety Nick Collins (2005-11), cornerback Allen Rossum (2000-01) and center Jeff Saturday (2012).

Packers HOF announces 2016 Hall of Fame Class

January 15, 2016 By Bill Scott

Chad Clifton

Chad Clifton

The Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame Inc. unveiled the 2016 Hall of Fame class on Friday.  The class includes former players Chad Clifton and Nick Collins along with former broadcaster, the late Russ Winnie.

Clifton was a second round pick by the Packers in the 2000 NFL Draft out of Tennessee.  He appeared in 165 games with 160 starts during his 12 year career, ranking second in franchise history for most games played by an offensive tackle behind only Forrest Gregg (187 games).

In 2004, Clifton helped limit the opposition to a franchise-low 14 sacks, as the Packers did not allow a sack in eight games, another single-season club record.  Clifton was selected to the Pro Bowl twice during his career.  He played on eight playoff teams in Green Bay, highlighted by the 2010 squad that won Super Bowl XLV. Packers waive Lyerla

August 20, 2014 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers waived undrafted tight end Colt Lyerla with an injury designation but hopes to bring him back on injured reserve once

Nick Collins

he clears waivers.

Lyerla suffered tears in his MCL and PCL while attempting to hurdle a player during a Packers’ training camp practice earlier this month.

If the Packers want Lyerla back, they could also reach an injury settlement and sign him to their practice squad later this season once he’s recovered from his injuries.

The Packers were happy with Lyerla’s blocking and could experiment with him at fullback when he returns.

Collins retires

Former Packers safety Nick Collins announced his retirement on Tuesday night via Twitter.  He has been out of football since 2011 when he suffered a neck injury in a game against Carolina.

Collins played in seven seasons for the Packers, collecting 21 interceptions.  He added a pick-six against the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Packers Super Bowl XLV  victory.

Packers not willing to take the risk on Collins

April 26, 2012 By Bill Scott

Rather than take a chance on putting Nick Collins back on the field and seeing

Mark Murphy

him get hurt, the Green Bay Packers chose to cut ties with Collins, releasing him on Wednesday after seven seasons with the Packers.

Collins suffered a herniated disk in his neck and underwent single-level cervical fusion surgery.  Following a lengthy rehab, some specialists thought Collins could play again with risking injury.  But the Packers and their doctors felt the risk was too great and decided they didn’t want to be a party to something bad happening.

The 29-year-old Collins hasn’t made a final decision on whether he is going to try to play in the NFL again. [Read more…]

Packers tell Collins he’ll be released

April 25, 2012 By Bill Scott

You can add a safety to the Green Bay Packers wish list in this week’s NFL

Nick Collins

Draft.  According to Tom Silverstein’s blog in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel this morning, the Packers told Collins they will release him.

Collins recently had tests evaluated by five different neurosurgeons to see if it would be safe for him to return.  Collins wants to play if doctors say he’s able to return to the field without the risk of further injury.  It looks like the Packers aren’t willing to take that risk at all.

Collins ruptured a disk in his neck in Week 2 of last season and underwent fusion surgery.

Packers won’t get a report on Collins prior to the draft

April 20, 2012 By Bill Scott

Safety Nick Collins may or may not return to play safety for the Green Bay

Ted Thompson

Packers.  What is certain is that the team won’t have an answer prior to the start of the NFL Draft next Thursday.

AUDIO: GM Ted Thompson said there’s nothing new on the Nick Collins front :07

Thompson said it’s not that important for the Packers to have that information before the draft either.

Collins future is certainly in question.  Without him last season, the Packers allowed more passing yards than any team in NFL history.  One might think Thompson would be looking at safety help early on.  But Thompson said that’s not the way they do things. [Read more…]

Collins to meet with Packers next week

April 4, 2012 By Bill Scott

A decision on Nick Collins future was supposed to be made public this week,

Nick Collins

but the future of the Packers safety in the NFL will now be discussed next week.

The Green Bay Press Gazette reported on Tuesday that Collins’ agent Alan Herman and Nick will both meet with the Packers next week and a decision will be made after that, based on the results of several tests.

Collins has single fusion surgery on his neck last September after he sustained a herniated disc in Week 2 of last season.

The 28-year old safety was coming off of three straight Pro Bowls seasons when he was injured trying to make a tackle against the Carolina Panthers.

Still nothing from Collins on his NFL future

April 3, 2012 By Bill Scott

No word from the Nick Collins camp with regards to his NFL playing future.  Collins agent said his client would receive test results from his doctors on Monday.  Whether those results were received or not is up in the air.

Last week, Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy indicated that he would advise Collins not to return after he sustained a herniated disc in week 2 of last season.  McCarthy said if Collins were his son, he wouldn’t let him play.

Collins said late last season that he wanted to have information in March to allow him to make a decision on his future.  He also wanted the Packers to be able to plan for the draft based on the news that Collins may receive.

Collins could get recommendation on football future today

April 2, 2012 By Bill Scott

Safety Nick Collins is expected to find out where he stands with regards to his

Nick Collins

NFL playing career today.  The Green BayPackers safety is awaiting word from Dr. Frank Cammisa (New York), the surgeon who performed the single-fusion surgery on Collins’ neck in September after he sustained a career-threatening herniated disc 2-weeks into the 2011 season.

Even if Collins is cleared to resume playing, there’s no guarantee the Packers’ medical staff will clear him.

Packers head coach Mike McCarthy told the Green Bay Press Gazette last week, “If Nick was my son, I would not let him play.”

Collins has said he’d like to return to the Packers, but he’s also indicated that he would retire if he turns out to be more at risk.
