Seattle’s Wilson off to great start

October 29, 2020 By Bill Scott

Russell Wilson

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson leads the NFL with 22 touchdown passes and a 119.5 passer rating this season.

In his nine-year career, the former Wisconsin Badger has 249 touchdown passes and a 102.2 passer rating, the second-highest mark in NFL history (minimum 1,500 attempts), behind only Aaron Rodgers (102.8).

With a touchdown pass on Sunday against San Francisco, Wilson will become the third player to reach 250 touchdown passes in his first nine seasons in NFL history, joining Peyton Manning (275 touchdown passes) and Pro Football Hall of Famer Dan Marino (266).

With at least three touchdown passes on Sunday, Wilson will have reached 25 touchdown passes in a season for the seventh time in his career and will join Manning (nine seasons) as the only players in NFL history with at least 25 touchdown passes in seven of their first nine seasons.

Last season, Wilson became the first quarterback in league history with a winning record in each of his first eight seasons.  With a win Sunday, Wilson will tie Manning (92 wins) for the most regular-season wins by a quarterback in his first nine seasons in NFL history.  Wilson will also tie Tom Brady (101) for the most wins, including the postseason, by a quarterback in his first nine seasons in NFL history.

Defense leads Denver to Super Bowl victory (AUDIO)

February 8, 2016 By Bill Scott

Peyton Manning

The Denver Bronco’s asked their defense to win the biggest game of the season and for veteran quarterback Peyton Manning to manage the game.  The result was a 24-10 victory.

Manning’s 56.6 passer rating was only slightly better than Cam Newton (55.4).  He completed just 13 of 23 for 141 yards, no touchdowns and one interception.  Hardly the type of numbers you would associate with a Super Bowl win.

But the Broncos simply asked Manning to not lose the game.  Don’t turn the ball over, like the Carolina Panthers did four times (three by Cam Newton).  Denver’s offense may have been boring to watch, but the Bronco’s coaching staff wasn’t worried about style points.  They were worried more about winning a Super Bowl.

To pull that off, the Broncos would have to put the game in the hands of their defense.

Defensive coordinator Wade Phillips has been coaching for 40 years, as an assistant, a head coach and now a coordinator.  He’s help build one of the league’s top defenses and they showed just how good they are by holding down the Panthers. [Read more…]

Manning joins Favre as only 70-thousand yard passers in NFL

With a 10-yard pass to wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders midway through the third quarter on Thursday night at Arrowhead Stadium, Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning surpassed 70-thousand passing yards in his career.

Manning became the second quarterback in NFL history to do so, joining former Packers great Brett Favre, who holds the record with 71,838 career passing yards.  Barring injury, Manning should surpass that total this season and become the all-time yardage passing leader in NFL history.

Manning finished with 256 yards, three touchdowns and one interception.  He helped direct a late fourth quarter drive that tied the game against the Chiefs at 24-all.  Then Jamaal Charles fumbled the ball with Denver’s Bradley Roby scooping the ball up and returning it 21 yards for the winning touchdown with 27 seconds left to cap another Peyton Manning comeback.

The Chiefs ended up scoring two  touchdowns within nine seconds of each other to pull out the win.

Brett Favre surpassed 70-thousand yards in 2010 with the Vikings at the age of 41 and in his 293rd career game.  Manning has reached 70-thousand faster, at the age of 39 and in his 258th NFL game.

Favre is a sure bet to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall-of-Fame in Canton, Ohio next year, in his first year of eligibility.

Aaron Rodgers wins 2nd NFL MVP Award

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers won’t win a second Super Bowl this season, but he did win his second NFL MVP award.

Rodgers was presented the award by Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning.

“It’s an honor to share this award with a man who has won this award more than anybody in history,” Rodgers said of Manning, who has been named NFL MVP five times.

Rodgers thanked Packers President Mark Murphy, general manager Ted Thompson, head coach Mike McCarthy, offensive coordinator Tom Clements and quarterbacks coach Alex Van Pelt. [Read more…]

Packers coaching staff leads NFC to a record performance

January 28, 2013 By Bill Scott

Green Bay Packers Head Coach Mike McCarthy and the rest of his staff were part of Pro Bowl history Sunday.  They led the NFC to a record 62-points as they picked up a 62-35 win over the AFC in Honolulu.

Two Packer players represented the team; C Jeff Saturday and G Josh Sitton.  Sitton got the nod thanks to the San Francisco 49ers making it to the Super Bowl as he replaced Mike Iupati.  It was Sitton’s first Pro Bowl appearance.  QB Aaron Rodgers and LB Clay Matthews were each named to the game but did not play due to injury.

Saturday was involved in one of the more memorable moments of the game.  For one play, he went on the field with the AFC offense to snap the ball to longtime Colt’s teammate Peyton Manning.  The two played together for 13-seasons in Indianapolis.  Saturday announced earlier in the week that he would be retiring after the game, his 6th Pro Bowl in 14 NFL Seasons.
