Watt & Herring pass the first test

October 28, 2014 By Bill Scott

MotionW_2ColorWisconsin Badger junior fullback Derek Watt and senior defensive lineman Warren Herring both came out well from their first playing action since going down with injury in the opener against LSU.

Herring missed time with a knee injury and Watt had surgery on a broken bone in his foot and returned to action Saturday in the Badgers 52-7 win over Maryland.

Watt played roughly 15-16 snaps at fullback while Herring was in on roughly twice as many plays.  Both can expect heavier workloads this week when the Badgers hit the road for a game at Rutgers.

Badgers land two more recruits

Wisconsin has received a pair of verbal commitments from a a couple of defensive line prospects over the weekend for the 2015 recruiting class.  The additions push the incoming recruiting class to 23.  He passed on offers from Colorado, Nevada and Hawaii.

Defensive tackle Elu Aydon (6’2, 296) will join the Badgers from Leone High School in Pago Pago, American Samoa.  Defensive tackle Olive Sagapolu (6’2, 290) from Santa Ana (California) Mater Dei High School is the other player to commit to Wisconsin.  He passed on offers from Washington State and Kansas State.

The Wisconsin Badgers have had a week off to get healthy and prepare for the Big Ten stretch drive.  Today, they’ll start that six-game stretch by hosting the Maryland Terrapins at Camp Randall Stadium (11am).

Maryland is coming off a 38-31 come-from-behind win over Iowa last Saturday, a game in which the Terrapins recorded four sacks against the Hawkeyes.

Starting defensive end Andre Monroe leads Maryland in sacks with 5 1/2, while the Terrapins have recorded 19 sacks, which ranks third in the Big Ten.

The Badgers have only allowed four sacks, which is tied for first.  But they don’t throw it as much as most Big Ten teams, relying more on the running of Melvin Gordon and Corey Clement. [Read more…]

Badgers injury update

September 4, 2014 By Bill Scott

The Wisconsin Badgers will have to play without starting defensive lineman Warren Herring for at least a month and fullback Derek Watt for even longer.

Herring injured his right knee on the final play of the third quarter during the season opening 28-24 loss to LSU last Saturday.  He underwent knee surgery on Wednesday and is expected to miss four to six weeks.

The Badgers open Big Ten play in four weeks at Northwestern on Oct. 4.

Watt injured his right foot in the LSU game.  He’s not expected to return until early November.

There’s good news for defensive end Konrad Zagzebski.  He was limited in practice on Tuesday and Wednesday, but he is expected to play Saturday against Western Illinois.

Zagzebski suffered a shot to the head/neck area in the first quarter of last Saturday’s game and lost feeling in his left side.  He was taken to a hospital for precautionary reasons but made the return trip home with the team.  Results from an MRI and a CAT scan were negative.

After Herring, Badgers not finding much nose guard help

August 9, 2014 By Bill Scott

The Wisconsin Badgers are looking for somebody to take a little bit of the workload off of starting nose guard Warren Herring.

As the Badgers complete their first week of training camp, head coach Gary Andersen isn’t having much luck.  Redshirt sophomore Arthur Goldberg, freshman Jeremy Patterson and freshman Conor Sheehy have not been able to show enough consistency to put the coaches at ease.

It’s a big enough concern that Andersen may have to ask ends Conrad Zagzebski or Jake Keefer to move inside for a few snaps.

Last year the Badgers had Beau Allen as their starter at nose guard and Herring was the backup, which proved to be a luxury.

Scrimmage

The Badgers will hold a scrimmage on Sunday morning (11am) at Camp Randall Stadium.  Admission, as well as parking is free.  Gary Andersen is hoping to get his young players in front of a big crowd, giving them some early experience in that area, in anticipation of the season opener against LSU on Aug. 30 in Houston.

The Big Ten’s preseason football meetings are underway in Chicago today.

Wisconsin coach Gary Andersen is on hand for the next two days with junior tailback Melvin Gordon, senior offensive tackle Rob Havenstein and senior defensive lineman Warren Herring.

The Badgers have already been picked by a panel of Big Ten Conference sportswriters to win the new West Division in 2014, edging out Iowa.

Today, Gordon and Havenstein earned preseason recognition from the Big Ten Conference, both selected to the Players to Watch list for the league’s West Division.

The Badgers are among 10 tabbed to the Players to Watch list, which includes five honorees each from the East and West Divisions.

Gordon enters the season as the nation’s second-leading returning rusher behind fellow West Division Player to Watch Ameer Abdullah of Nebraska.  Abdullah rushed for 1,690 yards last season, while Gordon piled up 1,609 yards.

Havenstein heads into his senior season as the Badgers’ most experienced player with 40 career games to his credit and he has made 27 consecutive starts at right tackle.
