August 13, 2013 By Bill Scott

The Wisconsin offense was unofficially charged with seven false-start penalties

Gary Anderson

during the first scrimmage of fall camp on Monday.

A big part of the offense’s problem was the Badger defense.  The movement and the blitzing disrupted things for the Badgers.

The Badgers also committed four turnovers (all fumbles).

Coach Gary Anderson went into the scrimmage with a three-man race at quarterback. When the dust settled, Anderson had a better idea of the position battle, between Curt Phillips, Joel Stave and Tanner McEvoy. [Read more…]

Incumbents Joel Stave and Curt Phillips are battling with junior college transfer Tanner McEvoy for the job.  Stave and Phillips participated in spring practice and should have a slight edge on McEvoy, who didn’t have the spring work with the rest of the team.  But McEvoy is expected to make this a tough decision on the coach.

The Badgers have only one lock at wide receiver, senior wide receiver Jared Abbrederis.  Jeff Duckworth and Jordan Fredrick both have experience, but playing time after Abbrederis appears to be up in the air. [Read more…]

Badgers drop third straight Rose Bowl

January 2, 2013 By Bill Scott

The Wisconsin Badgers fell behind 14-0 and never quite caught up, dropping their 3rd straight Rose Bowl 20-14 to the Stanford in Pasadena.

The Cardinal scored touchdowns on their first two drives before the Badger defense would tighten their belts and allow only a pair of field goals the rest of the way.

Things were looking up for the Badgers when Curt Phillips engineered a 10-play, 85-yard drive, capped off with a 4-yard TD pass to Jordan Frederick and closed the gap to 17-14.

The Badgers would start the second half with the football, but unfortunately, Stanford’s defense held them off the scoreboard the rest of the way.

Wisconsin would get one final chance, trailing 20-14 with 4:23 left.  Wisconsin moved from its 25 to the Stanford 49, but Phillips had a pass attempt tipped at the line of scrimmage and land in the hands of Stanford defensive back Usua Amanam and that would end the Badger threat. [Read more…]

Badgers face Nebraska in Big Ten Championship game (AUDIO)

December 1, 2012 By Bill Scott

The Wisconsin Badgers get a second chance to beat Nebraska this season and this time, it’s for the Big Ten Championship and a trip to

Big Ten Trophy

the Rose Bowl.

When the teams met back on Sept. 29, the Badgers rushed for only 56 yards on 41 carries.  Everything went their way early and they built a 17-point lead before caving and falling 30-27 to the Cornhuskers.

Joel Stave was the quarterback back then, taking over for the benched Danny O’Brien.  Stave and the Badgers led it 27-10 before the Huskers mounted their comeback.

Stave is out himself now and this time it’s the turn of 5th year senior Curt Phillips.  He’ll try to lead the Badgers to the Big Ten title and a trip to the Rose Bowl.

AUDIO: Bret Bielema on Curt Phillips trying to lead the Badgers to the Rose Bowl. :38

The Badgers beat Michigan State in last years Big Ten title game and those that were along for the ride will have gained some valuable experience.  Phillips isn’t a part of that group.  Last season, Phillips didn’t even make the trip. [Read more…]

November 25, 2012 By admin

Montee Ball

Nittany Lions (8-4, 6-2 Big Ten) fell short on Saturday.

Even with a record-setting performance from Ball, the Badgers fell to the Nittany Lions 24-21 in overtime at Beaver Stadium in University Park, PA.

Going into halftime, Wisconsin held a 14-7 lead, but Penn State dominated play in the second half, only to see the Badgers tie the game 21-21 at the end of regulation.

Badger running back Montee Ball rushed for 111 yards and a touchdown.  With that one touchdown, Ball overtook Travis Prentice’s previous record of 78 rushing touchdowns.

The Wisconsin Badgers are still in the Big Ten title game in two weeks, but it

Curt Phillips

won’t take the sting away from Saturday’s 21-14 overtime loss to the 6th ranked Ohio State Buckeyes at Camp Randall Stadium.

Wisconsin (7-4, 4-3 Big Ten) will close out the regular season at Penn State next Saturday.

Ohio State’s (11-0), 7-0) Carlos Hyde scored the overtime game winner, a 2-yard rushing touchdown to give the Buckeyes the win.  The Buckeyes defense turned around and stopped the Badgers on their offensive series to pull out the win. [Read more…]

November 11, 2012 By admin

Head coach Bielema impressed with record setting run game against Indiana

The Badgers (7-3, 4-2 Big Ten) racked up a school-record 564 rushing yards against the Hoosiers (4-6, 2-4 Big Ten).  Junior running back James White rushed for 163 yards on 14 carries and had two touchdowns.  Senior running back Montee Ball rushed for 208 yards on 27 carries and three touchdowns.

AUDIO: Bielema on Ball’s performance :13

Senior quarterback Curt Phillips, in his first collegiate start,  threw for only 41 yards and a touchdown, but added 68 yards on the ground.   Bielema’s plan was to keep the pressure off Phillips, but was impressed with the senior quarterback.

Budmayr to miss spring practice

March 8, 2012 By Bill Scott

Another setback for Wisconsin quarterback Jon Budmayr.  Less than a year after undergoing surgery to address nerve problems in his right elbow, Budmayr is experiencing similar problems in the elbow and is expected to miss all of spring practice.

Budmayr will be a redshirt sophomore this coming season.  He missed the entire 2011 season.

The Badgers will have just two healthy quarterbacks when they open spring drills.  Joe Brennan was the No. 2 quarterback behind Russell Wilson last season.  He’ll help lead the Badgers during spring workouts.  Curt Phillips, who has missed the last two seasons recovering from knee injuries, is also expected to be on the practice field this spring.

Joel Stave is a third quarterback in the mix.  He’s a walk-on from Whitnall high school and is scheduled to redshirt this coming season.
