Brewers current state means roster moves

June 3, 2013 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers 21-34 record, including a 6-22 month of May, has finally brought about some moves with yet to be determined results.

The Brewers called up second baseman Scooter Gennett from Triple-A Nashville and acquired third baseman Juan Francisco from Atlanta.

To make room for Gennett and Francisco, the Brewers released infielder Alex Gonzalez who was hitting just .177 in 41 games this season.  They also sent right-handed pitcher Mike Fiers to Nashville.

Gennett was hitting .297 at Nashville in 50 games with a homer, 13 RBI’S and 8 stolen bases.  Gennett’s promotion likely means considerable more bench time for Rickie Weeks. [Read more…]

Brewers open big series in St. Louis tonight (Video)

April 12, 2013 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers (2-6) will be well rested as they head into tonight’s series opener in St. Louis against the Cardinals (5-4).

As bad as things seem in the first week and a half, the Brewers are just 3-games behind division leading St. Louis and Cincinnati.  But their offense has been inconsistent, and their pitching has been worse.

If there’s a bright side to the setup for the Brewers, they’ll have their top 3-starting pitchers going in the series.  Kyle Lohse (0-0, 1.50 ERA) starts the opener tonight against the Cardinals Shelby Miller (1-0, 3.38 ERA).  Lohse won 16 games for the Cardinals last season before signing with the Brewers a week before the season. It’s opening day and the Brewers are optimistic (AUDIO)

The Milwaukee Brewers late signing of right-handed pitcher Kyle Lohse has quickly

Ron Roenicke

brought some optimism towards a post-season run.

Prior to Lohse signing with Milwaukee, they thought winning games would have to come from the offense.  They’ll still need to score runs, but the added pitching adds promise.  Lohse had pitched for four teams over 12 Major League seasons, but his best seasons have come in St. Louis the last two years, including a 16-3 mark in 2012 with a 2.86 ERA.

Lohse is expected to make his first start with the Brewers on Friday against Arizona.  He threw a bullpen session on Sunday at Miller Park and pitched in one exhibition game after signing late with the club. [Read more…]

Brewers sign Gonzalez to 1-year deal

February 7, 2013 By Bill Scott

Shortstop Alex Gonzalez passed his physical with the Milwaukee Brewers this week and he signed a 1-year contract worth $1.45-million with incentives that could increase that amount by another $800,000.

Gonzalez hit .259 last year in his first season with the Brewers.  He played in just 81 games before suffering a torn ACL which ended his season.

To make room on the 40-man roster, the Brewers had to part with right-hander Fautino De Los Santos after obtaining the reliever from Oakland last July in the deal that sent catcher George Kottaras to the Oakland A’s.  The San Diego Padres claimed De Los Santos off of waivers yesterday.

Quick start lifts Brewers past Cubs

April 11, 2012 By Bill Scott

Alex Gonzalez clubbed a 3-run homer in Milwaukee’s 5-run 1st inning to send the Brewers to a 7-4 win over the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field on Tuesday night.

Playing in chilly 40-degree weather, the Brewers jumped all over a wild Paul Maholm, sending 10 batters to the plate in the first inning.

Chris Narveson pitched five innings to improve to 7-1 with a 3.52 ERA in 14 career games against Chicago.  Narveson allowed three runs, two of them earned, on six hits.

Four Brewers pitchers, Marco Estrada, Kameron Loe, Jose Veras and Francisco Rodriguez worked the final four innings to preserve the victory.

Yovani Gallardo (0-1) gets the start for the Brewers this afternoon in game 3 of the 4 game series.  Ryan Dempster (0-0) pitches for the Cubs in the 1:20 start.
