Badgers wake up in second half to pull away to victory

November 14, 2019 By Bill Scott

The Wisconsin Badgers had to dig a little deeper on their bench on Wednesday night but eventually pulled away to beat McNeese State 83-63 at the Kohl Center.

The Badgers were short-handed to start, playing with old Kobe King who injured his ankle in practice on Monday.  Then they had to deal with Nate Reuvers foul trouble for much of the game.

With the Badgers off to a slow start, coach Greg Gard went to his bench and called on the likes of Tyler Wahl and Walt McGrory.  McGrory is a walk-on and one of his biggest roles is testing the starters in practice as a member of the scout team.

McGrory had combined for just 11 points in 22 games in his first two seasons, hadn’t played in the Badgers first two games.  But he set a personal best with 24 minutes and a career high 9 points last night.

It was McGrory and Brad Davison who supplied most of the first half firepower.  Davison finished with a season high 24-points, making 3 of 4 three-pointers, 7 of 8 shots overall and a perfect 7 of 7 at the free throw line. [Read more…]

Badgers drop season opener in overtime

November 6, 2019 By Bill Scott

Jordan Ford scored 26 points and Malik Fitts added 16 to lead 20th ranked Saint Mary’s of California to a 65-63 overtime victory over the Wisconsin Badgers on Tuesday night in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

The Badgers led by as many as eight points in the first half, but had to overcome a nine-point deficit in the second to force overtime.

In overtime, D’Mitrik Trice hit a jumper to give the Badgers a 63-60 lead, but the Badgers went scoreless for the final two-plus minutes to fall short.

The Badgers had a chance to win in regulation, but Aleem Ford’s three point attempt failed to hit iron.  Ford found the ball in his hands again for a chance at a game winner in overtime, but again his long three point attempt never drew iron.

Nate Reuvers led the Badgers with 22 points.  Brad Davison added 16 and Trice finished with 10.

Redshirt junior forward Micah Potter was allowed to travel with the team, but couldn’t play because the NCAA still deems him ineligible.  A final request for reinstatement is headed to the NCAA Committee for Legislative Relief for a final review and decision.

The Badgers return to action on Friday night when they host Eastern Illinois at the Kohl Center.

Woeful offensive showing ends Badgers season

March 23, 2019 By Bill Scott

Wisconsin’s offensive struggles in the latter portion of the season was a concern going into Friday’s NCAA Tournament opener against Oregon and those concerns turned out to be valid.

The Badgers shot just 20 percent from three-point range (6 of 30) and 33.3 percent overall (20 of 60), falling to the Ducks 72-54, seeing their season come to an end.

The loss was an embarrassment for the Badgers, who were tied with the Ducks, 25-25 at halftime.

Ethan Happ finished with 12 points and eight rebounds but turned it over five times.

Khalil Iverson, who has played well down the stretch, was the most effective Badger player in the loss, finishing with 12 points and five rebounds.

Brad Davison missed all seven of his three-point attempts.  D’Mitrik Trice made just 2 of 10 from distance while Brevin Pritzl went 0 for 3 and Kobe King and Aleem Ford missed both of their attempts.

The Ducks (24-12) ran their win streak to nine games.  Point guard Payton Pritchard finished with 19 points, eight assists and five rebounds.

The Badgers have struggled to score down the stretch and it was just a matter of time before the poor shooting would catch up with them.

The Badgers saw their season come to an end at 23-11.  They lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2013 when they were eliminated by 12th seeded Ole Miss 57-45, in Kansas City.

Badgers miss chances on the road, fall in OT

February 27, 2019 By Bill Scott

Tuesday’s Big Ten game between the Badgers and Hoosiers in Bloomington was like a trip to the dentist.  It was painful to watch and seemed at times like nobody really wanted the win.

But when the dust settled, it was the Hoosiers that ended their five-game losing streak, knocking off the Badgers 75-73 in double overtime.

Freshman Romeo Langford’s driving layup in the final second gave the Hoosiers the victory, just their second since January 3rd.

Langford’s game winner came after D’Mitrik Trice hit three free throws with 9.6 seconds left to tie the game 73-73.

The Badgers (19-9, 11-6 Big Ten) hit just 13 of 25 free throws, including just 5 of 11 in the second overtime.  They missed a chance to tie Maryland (21-7, 12-5) for fourth place in the Big Ten.  Instead, they’re a full game back with three to play.

Maryland faces Penn State on Wednesday night.  The Nittany Lions are in Madison to face the Badgers on Saturday. [Read more…]

Badgers hold off Northwestern

February 24, 2019 By Bill Scott

The Wisconsin Badgers sent the Northwestern Wildcats to their eighth straight loss, 69-64 in Evanston, Illinois on Saturday night.

The Badgers (19-8, 11-5 Big Ten) remained one-half game behind fourth place Maryland (21-7, 12-5), which knocked off Ohio State 72-62 earlier in the day.

Ethan Happ struggled early and was held to five points in the first half.  But he had three straight crucial baskets down the stretch for the Badgers.  He finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Brad Davison scored 10 of his team high 16 points in the second half and added six rebounds and three assists.  D’Mitrik Trice hit four of nine from three-point distance and finished with 14 points.

Vic Law had 24 points and Derek Pardon added 21 in the loss for the Wildcats (12-15, 3-13).

Badgers win grudge match against Illinois

February 19, 2019 By Bill Scott

Khalil Iverson

The Wisconsin Badgers (18-8, 10-5 Big Ten) snapped their two-game losing streak by coming from behind to beat Illinois 64-58 at the Kohl Center on Monday night.

Brad Davison had 18 points and seven rebounds and Khalil Iverson added a career high 16 points with nine rebounds to lead the Badgers.

Wisconsin shot just 32.1% from the field in the first half, yet trailed the Illini by just one point at halftime.  They converted 48.1% from the field in the second half to come from behind for the win.

Illinois (10-16, 6-9) saw its winning streak end at four games.  Wisconsin also extended its winning streak against the Illini to 15 games.  Wisconsin’s last defeat at the hands of the Illini took place on January 2, 2011.

The Badgers won the first meeting against Illinois last month, 72-60 in Champaign.  In that game, Khalil Iverson had 12 points and seven rebounds. [Read more…]

Badgers avenge January loss to Gophers

February 7, 2019 By Bill Scott

Ethan Happ

It was far from perfect, but the 19th ranked Wisconsin Badgers aren’t interested in style points at this stage of the season.  After falling to Minnesota at the Kohl Center on January 3, the Badgers returned the favor, pulling out a 56-51 win on Wednesday night at Williams Arena in Minneapolis.

The Badgers missed a number of shots in the lane in the first half but settled down in the second half to pull out the win.

The Badgers (17-6, 9-3 Big Ten) extended their win streak to six games and moved into a third place tie with Michigan State in the Big Ten race.  Wisconsin is a half game behind Purdue and a game behind front running Michigan and will face the Wolverines on Saturday in Ann Arbor.

The Badgers got 15 points and 13 rebounds from Ethan Happ as they won on the road for the seventh time in the last eight games.  Guard Brad Davison added 10 points, although hit just 2 of 12 from the field. [Read more…]

Badgers extend win streak to four

January 30, 2019 By Bill Scott

The Wisconsin Badgers jumped out to an early 14-point lead on Nebraska, before the Cornhuskers bounced back to take a lead half way through the second half.

That’s when Charlie Davis came off the bench to neutralize the threat and sophomore guard Brad Davison went on a run to help the Badgers put the game away.  Davison scored 01 of his team-high 13 points in the second half.

The Badgers (15-6, 7-3 Big Ten) remained a half-game behind fourth-place Maryland (17-5, 8-3), which posted a 70-52 win over Northwestern.  Wisconsin will host Maryland on Friday night at the Kohl Center.

Wisconsin’s 15th victory matched their total from a year ago (15-18).

Nebraska (13-8, 3-7 Big Ten) dropped their fourth straight.  They played without senior forward Isaac Copeland, who suffered a season ending knee injury on Saturday.

Ethan Happ finished with 10 points, nine rebounds and four assists.  Forward Nate Reuvers played just 14 minutes while dealing with foul trouble.

It was a balanced, team effort for the Badgers, who got 13 points and nine rebounds from bench players.  Brevin Pritzl led that group with eight points.

Nebraska got 18 points from Isaiah Roby in the loss.

Wisconsin’s defense held the Huskers to just 17 of 60 from the field.

Badgers push Big Ten win streak to three

January 26, 2019 By Bill Scott

On a day when upsets appeared to be the norm around the Big Ten Conference, the Wisconsin Badgers took care of business by beating Northwestern 62-46 at the Kohl Center.

Ethan Happ recorded his second triple-double of the season, finishing with 13 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists to help the Badgers (14-6, 6-3 Big Ten) record their third straight Big Ten victory.

The Badgers trail third place Purdue (13-6, 6-2) by one game in the standings.  Michigan State (18-2, 9-0) is in first place and will host Purdue on Sunday.  The Badgers are within a half game of fourth-place Maryland (16-5, 7-3), which lost to Illinois 78-67 earlier in the day.

D’Mitrik Trice and Brad Davison scored 18 points each for the Badgers.  Trice hit 4 of 6 three-pointers and Davison hit 3 of 6.

As a whole, the Badges hit 8 of 18 from three-point distance (44.4 percent) and after turning the ball over 17 times against Illinois, they only coughed it up seven times against the Wildcats.
