Hornibrook leaves Wisconsin football team (AUDIO)

February 27, 2019 By Bill Scott

Alex Hornibrook

Wisconsin Badger head football coach Paul Chryst announced Wednesday afternoon that quarterback Alex Hornibrook has decided to leave the Badger football team.

“Alex informed us of his decision to leave the team earlier today,” UW coach Paul Chryst said in a release.  “He contributed to a lot of our recent success and we want to thank him for all he did for our program.  We wish him the best of luck.”

Hornibrook missed time last season after suffering a concussion and continuing to have issues.  Those issues reportedly extended into the offseason.

Hornibrook went 26-6 in three seasons as a starting quarterback for the Badgers, including a 20-4 mark in Big Ten games.  His .813 winning percentage is the best of any quarterback in program history.  He started nine games as a junior last season, throwing for 1,532 yards and 13 touchdowns. Badgers cap disappointing season with blowout bowl victory

December 28, 2018 By Bill Scott

Jonathan Taylor

Wisconsin running back Jonathan Taylor rushed 27 times for 205 yards and a touchdown to lead the Badgers to a 35-3 Pinstripe Bowl victory over the Miami Hurricanes on Thursday in New York.

Taylor posted his 12th game of at least 150 yards and 100 yards in his 12th game this season, tying Melvin Gordon’s program record set in 2014.

Taylor’s performance pushed his season total to 2,194 yards and his two season total to 4,171 yards, becoming the only FBS runner to surpass the 4,000-yard mark in his first two seasons.  He was named the Pinstripe Bowl MVP.

The Badgers struggled throughout the season and saw the regular season come to a disappointing end with a trophy game loss to the Minnesota Gophers at Camp Randall.

Thursday’s rout of the Hurricanes at the very least, sent the Badgers into the offseason on a high-note.

The Badgers won their fifth straight bowl game and second in as many years against Miami.  The Badgers knocked off the Hurricanes in last year’s Orange Bowl 34-24.  Wisconsin improved to 8-5. [Read more…]

Badgers do little in loss at Penn State

November 11, 2018 By Bill Scott

Paul Chryst

The Wisconsin Badgers jumped out to an early 7-0 lead when Jonathan Taylor cruised 71 yards for a touchdown.  That for the most part was the only big highlight for the day as the Penn State rebounded for a 22-10 win in State College, PA.

The Badgers (6-4, 4-3 Big Ten) has lost four games in a season for the first time in Paul Chryst’s four seasons and they may not be done yet.

The Badgers West Division title hopes are gone with the loss.  Northwestern’s 14-10 win at Iowa gave the title to the Wildcats, who will battle either Michigan or Ohio State for the Big Ten title.

The Nittany Lions (7-3, 4-3) won their fourth straight in the series.  Trace McSorely, playing on a bad knee, completed 19 of 25 for 160 yards and a touchdown.  Miles Sanders rushed for 159 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries for Penn State.

Jonathan Taylor finished with 185 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries, but the Badgers managed to convert just 4 of 15 third downs, which is a growing problem for UW. [Read more…]

Badgers Big Ten West title hopes take a shot

October 28, 2018 By Bill Scott

Jack Coan

Wisconsin’s chance at a third straight Big Ten West Division title took a big blow on Saturday with a 31-17 loss at Northwestern.

The loss sent the Badgers to 5-3 on the season and 3-2 in the Big Ten.  The Wildcats (5-3, 5-1) won their fourth straight as they stayed in first place in the Big Ten West by themselves.

Northwestern also received additional help when Iowa fell at Michigan State and Purdue lost at Michigan State.

The Badgers lost three fumbles, two by Jonathan Taylor and one by quarterback Jack Coan.  The Wildcats turned those turnovers into 17 points.

Coan finished 20 of 31 for 158 yards and a touchdown in his first collegiate start.  He started for redshirt junior Alex Hornibrook, who suffered a concussion last week.

Jonathan Taylor, who entered the game as the nation’s leading rusher, was held to 46 yards on 11 carries.  It ended a streak of seven straight 100-yard rushing games this season. [Read more…]

Hornibrook suffers concussion, may not play at Northwestern

October 25, 2018 By Bill Scott

Alex Hornibrook

The Wisconsin Badgers could be without their starting quarterback, Alex Hornibrook, when they face Northwestern in Big Ten action in Evanston on Saturday.

Hornibrook suffered a concussion and may not be able to play on Saturday.  It’s not known if the injury took place in last week’s win over Illinois, but his normally scheduled Monday session with the media was cancelled on Monday.

According to a source, the Badgers have spent the bulk of the week preparing sophomore Jack Coan to make his first collegiate start if Hornibrook can’t go.

As a freshman last season, Coan completed 5 of 5 for 36 yards in limited action.

True freshman Danny Vandenboom finished up in the win over the Illini but it’s not certain if that was simply mop-up duty or if it was related to a Hornibrook injury.

Hornibrook is in his third season as the Badgers starter.  He’s passed for 1,251 yards with 11 touchdowns and 6 interceptions in seven games.  He was named MVP in the Badgers Orange Bowl victory over Miami last season.

Hornibrook is not listed on the Wisconsin injury report this week.

Coan to start the season as Badgers No. 2

August 25, 2017 By Bill Scott

Jack Coan

Freshman Jack Coan will start the season next week as the Wisconsin Badgers No. 2 quarterback, backing up redshirt sophomore starter Alex Hornibrook.  He beat out Kare Lyles for the job.

Wisconsin Coach Paul Chryst confirmed Coan’s position on ESPN Madison’s “In the Trenches” radio show.

The Sayville, New York native was an early enrollee at UW.  He took part in spring practice and opened training camp comfortable and confident.

In high school, Coan passed for 9.787 yards and 128 touchdowns.  He rushed for 2,551 yards and 33 touchdowns in four seasons.

Chryst said he expects five or six freshmen to play for the Badgers this season.

The Badgers open their season Friday, Sept. 1 against Utah State at Camp Randall Stadium.

Badgers cap off spring ball tonight at Camp Randall (AUDIO)

April 21, 2017 By Bill Scott

Alex Hornibrook

The Wisconsin Badgers cap off spring workouts with their annual spring game tonight (6:30 p.m.) at Camp Randall Stadium.

The Badgers have been able to build depth all over their roster with several starters were either limited or held out while recovering from off-season surgery.

But everyone loves to focus on the quarterback position.  Alex Hornibrook started all nine Big Ten games as a redshirt freshman in 2016.  He battled Bart Houston into the final week before the start of the season last year before finally winning the job.

All of that experience has landed Hornibrook the job for this season.  The position was handed to him during offseason workouts.

The big question at quarterback is who backs up Hornibrook? [Read more…]

Hornibrook named number-one quarterback to start spring work

March 15, 2017 By Bill Scott

Alex Hornibrook

Last year, Wisconsin didn’t name it’s starting quarterback for the season until days before the opener against LSU at Lambeau Field.  Even though Alex Hornibrook started all nine Big Ten regular-season games as a redshirt freshman, he still shared some playing time with senior Bart Houston.

But Hornibrook, who completed 58.6% of his passes for 1,262 yards with nine touchdowns and seven interceptions, was quickly named the number one man for this season.

Kare’ Lyles will be a redshirt freshman in the fall, and freshman Jack Coan is a newcomer.  They are Hornibrook’s backups.

The Badgers opened spring practice on Tuesday and they opened with David Edwards at left tackle, taking the spot of the departed Ryan Ramczyk.  Edwards started the final seven games last season at right tackle. [Read more…]
