Jolly cleared by his doctors to return

June 30, 2014 By Bill Scott

Free agent defensive end Johnny Jolly has been cleared by his own doctors to return to NFL action.  Now the 31-year old must convince teamsJohnny Jolly to give him an opportunity.

Jolly suffered a bulging disc in the C5 section of his cervical spine last December.

Jolly was a big factor in the Packers run defense during the first half of the defense, collecting 21 tackles and a sack in 13 games.  There’s still a chance he could play a role on the team as coach Mike McCarthy hasn’t closed the door on he or TE Jermichael Finley.

But the Packers have made plans to move on without Jolly if he’s not able to return.  They’ve drafted Khyri Thornton in the 3rd round, added Letroy Guion in free agency and re-signed nose tackle B.J. Raji.

Jolly starts his comeback attempt

February 28, 2014 By Bill Scott

This isn’t the first time that Johnny Jolly has had to try to fight the odds

Johnny Jolly

and make a comeback in the NFL, but it is the first time his health is an issue.

Jolly had surgery in early January to repair a bulging disc between the 5th and 6th cervical vertebrae.  The Green Bay Packers placed him on injured reserve late in the season.

According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Jolly has received permission from his surgeon this week to start doing cardio and light lifting.  Two weeks from now, Jolly will undergo an X-ray and MRI to determine whether he can step up his workouts and get closer to a return to football.

Packers safety Sean Richardson had a similar procedure done early last year and he eventually returned late last season, appearing in six games with the Packers.

Jolly is an unrestricted free agent, so there’s no guarantee even if he does return to the game, that it will be with the Packers.

Jones not sure where his future is

January 6, 2014 By Bill Scott

James Jones isn’t sure where his football future will take him, but he plans to spend a month or more decompressing with his family before he

James Jones

James Jones

starts getting back into the football swing of things.

Jones will be an unrestricted free agent and it’s uncertain just what the Green Bay Packers thought process is about having him remain a part of the outstanding Packers’ receiving group.

Jones is one of the higher profile players set to hit free agency, joining players like Jermichael Finley, Evan Dietrich-Smith, Sam Shields, B.J. Raji, Ryan Pickett and Johnny Jolly.  Add Mike Neal, John Kuhn and Andrew Quarless to that list as well.

Jones was an unrestricted free agent three years ago as well.  He returned to the Packers, but that was a totally different deal.

AUDIO: Jones said things are different this time :11

Jones is also a different player than he was three years ago, from the standpoint of numbers along.  He’s become more of a consistent, productive, go-to player.

Jones and the Packers almost had another week of playoff football to concern themselves with.  They took the 49ers to the wire and lost 23-20 when Phil Dawson booted a 33-yard field goal, his 3rd of the day, to win it for San Francisco.

Jolly ready to kick off 2013 season

September 4, 2013 By Bill Scott

At the moment, there’s no better story in the Green Bay Packers lockerrom than

defensive lineman Johnny Jolly.

The 30-year-old was out of football for three years because of a drug suspension.  Three years away from the game would be career ending for most players.  But Jolly made it back.

His return didn’t come without some anxiousness.  Despite his ability to make plays throughout training camp, Jolly never thought he had wrapped up a spot.

Jolly was performing at a high level for the Packers prior to his suspension.  He was asked this week if he ever thought what if, what if he didn’t get mixed up with drugs? [Read more…]

Jolly to find out his fate soon!

August 29, 2013 By Bill Scott

The moment of truth is coming soon for Green Bay Packers defensive tackle Johnny

Johnny Jolly

Jolly.  The big defensive lineman has had a good camp, returning from a three-year absence from the game.  The question is, has Jolly done enough to make the 53-man roster?

Jolly has come a long way.  When he arrived in Green Bay, he looked like a player that had been away from the game for three years.  Making it all the way back would be a long haul.  But the Packers set the course, allowing Jolly to return slowly and work his way back into shape. [Read more…]

Jolly getting closer to locking up roster spot

August 20, 2013 By Bill Scott

If you spend any time watching Johnny Jolly in Green Bay Packers training camp

practice, you’ll see him bat down quarterback pass attempts at least 2 or 3 times a day.  It’s one of the things that Jolly does, and does well.

In the Packers 19-7 win over the Rams, Jolly deflected a pass that was picked off by Packers defensive back Jarrett Bush.

Jolly batted down 10 passes back in 2009, the last time Jolly played for the Packers and the skill is resurfacing in training camp.

Jolly’s conditioning is improving and his performance on the field likely means a spot on the 53-man roster.  But Mike McCarthy said no jobs have been won yet and Jolly said he’s not about to even begin to think his work is done.

Jolly states his case in victory over the Rams

The Green Bay Packers decided to take a chance on Johnny Jolly after he battled

drug addiction, spent time in jail and served a three-year suspension handed down by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.  It appears that the gamble is about to pay off for the Packers.

He has made steady progress and is beginning to look like the Johnny Jolly of 2009, which is the last year that he played for the Packers before running into trouble with the law. [Read more…]

Packers Training Camp Update

July 31, 2013 By Bill Scott

Wednesday was practice #5 for the Green Bay Packers as training camp rolls on.  The team was on the field for 2-hours and 29-minutes before calling it quits.

Here we some of the highlights from Head Coach Mike McCarthy talking to the media after practice:

  • DT Johnny Jolly left practice early with an ankle injury
  • OLB Dezman Moses was held out of practice with a toe injury
  • Rookie OT David Bakhtiari is one of the guys who has stood out since putting on the pads
  • Still waiting for someone to step out in the return game.  Randall Cobb would be the guy if there was a game Thursday
  • TE Andrew Quarless is still coming along from knee injury in 2011
  • Feels the inside linebacker depth is as good as they have had

The Packers will have another morning practice Thursday.  Friday they will be on the field at 7:00 pm for the lone night practice of camp.  Both workouts will be in full pads.

has served his time and now hopes to resume a once promising pro football career.

Jolly returned to the practice field with the Green Bay Packers for the first time on Tuesday as the Packers opened their off-season mandatory minicamp.

Jolly has been through multiple arrests for possession of codeine, a drug that Jolly said he was addicted to.  Jolly said he’s clean now and hasn’t touched in 19 months.

AUDIO: Jolly said he’s forever grateful to the Packers :14

The Packers selected Jolly in the 6th round of the 2006 draft.  During the first day of minicamp workouts, Jolly took roughly a dozen snaps during team periods and participated in all individual drills. [Read more…]

program in Houston on Wednesday and will report to the Green Bay Packers’ organized team activities.  The story was first reported by WBAY-TV in Green Bay.

The 30-year old Jolly is attempting a comeback after serving a three-year suspension for violating the league’s policy on substance abuse.  Jolly served six months of a six-year jail term for violating probation.  He was released last May and placed on shock probation for 10 years.
