Henderson returns from shoulder surgey

March 5, 2015 By Bill Scott

Milwaukee Brewers logoThe Milwaukee Brewers blanked the UW-Milwaukee Panthers 8-0 in their exhibition opener yesterday in Phoenix.  The Brewers blanked the Panthers as eight pitchers combined on a 1-hitter.

Reliever Jim Henderson pitched in a game for the first time since May 2 of last season, working a hitless inning.

Manager Ron Roenicke was pleased with Henderson’s work.  Roenicke said, “He threw some sliders down, which I liked.  He missed with them down but I still liked it.  The ball looked like it came out free.”

The Brewers play their Cactus League opener in Tempe, Arizona this afternoon.  Kyle Lohse will get the start for the Brewers.  Barring an upset, Lohse is expected to be the Brewers starting pitcher on opening day.

Pitchers & catchers report today

February 20, 2015 By Bill Scott

Brewers spring homeThe Milwaukee Brewers still shake their heads when they look back at last years collapse.  A 9-22 record to wrap up the season, dropped the Brewers out of first place and eventually out of playoff contention.

They’ve had several months during the offseason to think about what happened.

Now it’s time to forget and move on.  Pitchers and catchers are scheduled to report to spring training in Arizona today.  They’ll undergo physical’s and testing tomorrow and begin their first official workouts on Sunday.  The full squad must report by Wednesday.

At the teams fan event in Milwaukee recently, Manager Ron Roenicke said they have to learn from the end of last season and then move on.  [Read more…]

Lohse keeps Brewers alive for another day

The Milwaukee Brewers stayed alive in the NL wildcard picture for another day, blanking the Cincinnati Reds 5-0 at Great American Ballpark.

The win, along with the Giants 9-1 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers, allowed the Brewers to avoid playoff elimination for at least one more day.  The Brewers trail the Giants by four games, with four left to play.

The Brewers need to win all four of their remaining games and get the Giants to lose all four of their games, just to force a 0ne-game matchup for the right to a wild card spot.  The Brewers close out their series at Cincinnati today, then host the Chicago Cubs for a three-game season ending series at Miller Park this weekend.  The Giants open a 4-game series with division rival San Diego.

Kyle Lohse went the distance, tossing a 2-hit, complete game shutout for the Brewers.  He struck out six, with no walks.  Cincinnati pitchers also did their best to help the Brewers by walking 10 hitters.

During the first eight games of the road trip, Brewer starting pitchers have combined for a 1.17 ERA.

Second baseman Rickie Weeks led the Brewers offensively, going 2 for 3 with a walk.  Jean Segura doubled home two runs in the 8th inning.

Yovani Gallardo (8-10, 3.46) pitches the series finale for the Brewers today.  David Holmberg (1-2, 5.25) pitches for the Reds today (11:35am).

Brewers blow late lead and fall to the Cardinals

A late inning defensive miscue likely cost the Milwaukee Brewers a chance at victory in St. Louis last night, dealing the Brewers a major blow in their pursuit of a post season playoff spot.

Mark Reynolds committed the mental error at first base in the eighth inning.  With one out and a runner aboard, A.J. Pierzynski grounded to first base.  Reynolds fielded the ball cleanly, but instead of throwing to second to start a 3-6-3 double play, he simply turned and stepped on first base, thinking they had two outs already.

That error cost the Brewers a pair of runs and sent the game to extra innings.  Eventually, Tony Cruz provided the game winning rbi single in the 13th and sending the Brewers home with a 3-2 loss.

The Brewers dropped 6-games behind the Cardinals in the NL Central and 3 1/2 games behind the Pittsburgh Pirates in the NL Wildcard race. [Read more…]

Brewers run win streak to three games

September 13, 2014 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers continue their postseason playoff run with a ninth inning 3-2 walk off victory over the Cincinnati Reds at Miller Park on Friday night.

Lyle Overbay’s bases-loaded single off Jumbo Diaz in the ninth inning scored pinch runner Logan Schafer and gave the Brewers their third straight victory.  It’s their longest win streak since they put together five straight victories from Aug. 14-19.

With Lucroy at second base, Aramis Ramirez moved him to third with a groundout to shortstop.  Then Ryan Braun and Gerardo Parra were walked intentionally to bring up Overbay.  On Diaz’s first pitch with the bases loaded, Overbay lined a hit to the gap in left-center to send the 31,463 fans home happy.

As a pinch hitter, Overbay is hitting .370 with a home run and eight rbi’s this season.

Kyle Lohse started and wasn’t involved in the decision for the Brewers.  But he did allow two earned runs on five hits with two walks and six strikeouts, his best start since late August.

The victory goes to Francisco Rodriguez (5-5) who worked the top of the 9th for the Brewers, before Overbay’s heroics.

Game two of the series is tonight at Miller Park.  Yovani Gallardo (8-9, 3.61) pitches for Milwaukee.  David Holmberg (0-1, 8.25) goes for the Reds.

Brewers blown out by Giants

The Milwaukee Brewers dropped their fifth straight game yesterday, 15-5 to San Francisco and were swept by the Giants in the three-game series.

The loss leaves the Brewers tied with the St. Louis Cardinals for the NL Central Division lead.

The Brewers were outscored in the series 31-8.  They had just 17 hits while giving up 45 to the Giants.  The Giants collected 16-hits in the finale yesterday, 10 of them for extra bases.

To add insult to injury, the Brewers lost center fielder Carlos Gomez to a left-wrist injury in the third inning on a swinging strikeout.  He’s considered to be doubtful for today’s series opener against the Cubs in Chicago.

Kyle Lohse made it through just 5 2/3 innings, allowing seven runs and nine hits.  He’s lost four times in his last five outings and dropped to
12-8 on the season.

Madison Bumgarner (16-9) earned the win, going six innings, allowing a run on five hits.  He walked one and struck out seven.

AUDIO: Ron Roenicke said they are not panicking :17

Jimmy Nelson (2-5, 4.10) pitches the series opener against the Cubs today.  Chicago counters with Jacob Turner (4-8, 5.84).

The Milwaukee Brewers teed off on the San DiegoPadres last night, rolling to a 10-1 victory atPetco Park.

The Brewers banged out 16-hits, including home runs from Ryan Braun and Aramis Ramirez and Kyle Lohse (12-7) returned to the rotation, pitching six solid innings for his first victory since July 23.

Lohse missed his last start because of an ankle injury.  He returned to help the Brewers maintain their 1 1/2 game lead on the St. Louis Cardinals atop the NL Central.

Carlos Gomez, Ryan Braun and Aramis Ramirez all had three hits for the Brewers, while Ramirez and Gerardo Parra finished with three rbi’s.

The Brewers have now won five straight road games, the third time this season they’ve reached that total.

The Brewers and Padres play game two of the series tonight.  Jimmy Nelson (2-4, 4.15) goes for the Brewers.  San Diego sends Tyson Ross
(11-12, 2.68) to the mound.

Brewers struggle to score runs, fall to Cubs

August 14, 2014 By Bill Scott

Javier Baez and Anthony Rizzo hit back-to-back home runs as the Chicago Cubs jumped on Kyle Lohse early and beat the Milwaukee Brewers
4-2 at Wrigley Field.

Cubs starter Tsuyoshi Wada (2-1) was coasting until he was chased in the seventh, when he allowed back-t0-back home runs to Rickie Weeks and Martin Maldonado.  Wada allowed two runs on five hits in 6 2/3 innings.  He struck out five and walked one.

Kyle Lohse (11-7) allowed four runs on seven hits in three innings, and tweaked his right ankle during an at-bat.  It was the shortest outing of the season.

Lohse’s injury isn’t believed to be serious, but it’s not certain whether or not he’ll be able to make his next start on Aug. 19 against Toronto.

The Brewers can’t afford to lose another starter.  They’re already without Matt Garza, who is on the 15-day disabled list with a strained oblique.

Marco Estrada came on in relief of Lohse and held the Cubs down for four innings.  He allowed two hits and struck out two.
