Marquette wraps up 3rd place at Maui Invitational

Andrew Rowsey poured in 30 points and Sam Hauser added 20 to lead five players in double figures as Marquette knocked off LSU 94-84 in the consolation game of the Maui Invitational.

Matt Heldt and Sacar Anim added 12 points each and Markus Howard finished with 10 points as Marquette improved to 3-2 with the win.

Hauser, after getting into early foul trouble in the loss to Wichita State a day earlier, started hot on Wednesday.  Hauser had 14 of Marquette’s first 16 points, making his first five three pointers.  Hauser had 18 of his 20 points in the first half.

Andrew Rowsey scored 24 of his 30 points in the second half and hit all 16 of his free throw attempts in the game.

Marquette returns to action on Monday night against Eastern Illinois at the BMO Harris Bradley Center.

Marquette falls to Wichita State in Maui Invitational

Foul trouble and poor shooting did in the Marquette Golden Eagles on Tuesday night as they fell to Wichita State 80-66 in the Maui Invitational.

Marquette (2-2) hit just 10 of its 33 shots in the second half as Andrew Rowsey and Markus Howard combined for 26 of the teams 30 points in the second half.

Sam Hauser played just three minutes in the first half after landing three quick fouls.  He played 19 minutes in the second half but missed all four shots he took.  Hauser finished with three points from his short stint in the first half.

Rowsey finished with 26 points, Howard had 25 and the rest of the team managed to score 15 points.

After trailing 41-36 at halftime, Marquette bounced back to tie the game at 45.  But the Shockers went on a 13-3 run and were never tied or behind again.

Marquette has one game left in Maui.  They’ll face LSU tonight.

Marquette to open Maui Invitational against VCU

The Marquette men’s basketball team will open the 34th Maui Invitational in November against VCU.  The contest will tip off at 1:30 p.m. and will be televised on ESPN2.  The tournament released its bracket on Tuesday.

Marquette and VCU are joined in their half of the bracket by Wichita State and California.  The other half features opening round games between Notre Dame and Chaminade and Michigan against LSU.

Marquette and VCU will be meeting for just the third time.  The Rams won the first two meetings back in 1986 and ’87.

The Golden Eagles return this season having lost three of their top five scorers to graduation and redshirt junior

 Duane Wilson left for Texas A & M as a graduate transfer.  They have five returning scholarship players.

Badgers fall to North Carolina in Maui

Kennedy Meeks had 15 points and a career-high 16 rebounds and Joel Berry II poured in 22 points to lead number-four North Carolina to a 71-56 win over the 16th ranked Wisconsin Badgers in the championship game of the Maui Invitational.

The Tar Heels (7-0) held the Badgers to 38-percent shooting.  Wisconsin guard Bronson Koenig was held to just one-for-13 from the field.

Vitto Brown had 15 points and Ethan Happ 13 points to lead the Badgers (4-2). [Read more…]

Marquette rebounds against Mississippi State

The Marquette Golden Eagles took their frustrations from Tuesday’s loss in the Maui Invitational to Butler out on Mississippi State on Wednesday, rolling to a 89-62 win over the Bulldogs.

Butler knocked off the Golden Eagles Tuesday with a buzzer beating three-pointer.  Marquette put that loss behind them quickly however.  They jumped out early on an undermanned Mississippi State (1-3) team and were never threatened.

Vander Blue scored 18 points and Devante Gardner added 15 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Golden Eagles (3-1).

Marquette faces USC (3-1) in today’s 5th place game at 4pm Wisconsin time.  The Trojans are led by former Marquette coach Kevin O’Neill.
