St. Norbert College hosts Augsburg in NCAA D-3 hockey tournament

The St. Norbert College Green Knights will host Augsburg University in the first round of the NCAA Division 3 Tournament on Saturday night (7 p.m.) in De Pere.

It marks the fourth straight season the Green Knights (22-4-3) will host the Auggies (21-3-3) in the NCAA Tournament.  St. Norbert eliminated Augsburg in national quarterfinal games by scores of 6-1 in 2016, 4-3 in overtime in 2017 and 5-2 in 2018.

The winner will advance to a national quarterfinal against UW-Stevens Point (26-0-2) on Saturday, March 16 at K.B. Willett Arena in Stevens Point.

This tournament appearance is St. Norbert’s 19th, with the Green Knights also making appearances in 1997-99, 2002-08, 2010-14 and 2016-18.  All previous first-round and quarterfinal-round games except for 1997 have come at home.  The Green Knights are 31-13-1 all-time in the NCAA tournament, winning national titles in 2008, 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2018.  St. Norbert is 22-4 in its last 26 NCAA Tournament games dating back to 2008.

Augsburg is making its sixth NCAA Division 3 Tournament appearance.  The Auggies played in the tournament in 1984, 1998, 2016, 2017 and 2018.  Augsburg is 4-7-1 all-time in the tournament and advanced to the Frozen Four in 1998.

St. Norbert clinched the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) automatic qualifier with a 4-1 win over Adrian College on Saturday in De Pere.  Augsburg earned the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference’s automatic berth with a 2-1 win in quadruple overtime over St. John’s University on Saturday in Minneapolis.

Top-ranked St. Norbert upset in D-3 hockey

Top ranked St. Norbert College was upset on Friday night, falling 5-4 to Northland College in Ashland.

The Green Knights (15-2-1, 10-1 NCHA) found itself trailing 3-0 after two periods and 4-0 early in the third.

After St. Norbert cut the gap to 4-2, Northland scored a fifth goal to take a 5-2 lead.  The Knights would score two more times but couldn’t get the equalizer.

St. Norbert outshot Northland 49-26 in the loss.

St. Norbert’s Coghlin and Cooper receive NCHA Awards

St. Norbert College senior forward Erik Cooper was named the 2016 Northern Collegiate Hockey Association Player of the Year to pace the Green Knights’ league honors announced by the conference office on Tuesday night.

Cooper became the ninth different St. Norbert player to earn the Green Knights’ tenth NCHA Player of the Year award.  In addition to Cooper, senior forward Michael Hill and junior defenseman Blake Thompson also earned All-NCHA  honors.

St. Norbert coach Tim Coghlin was named NCHA Coach of the Year, his seventh overall and first since 2010.

Cooper led the Green Knights in scoring in the regular season with 11 goals and 17 assists for 28 points.  He [Read more…]

St. Norbert College needs help to gain top seed in upcoming playoffs

St. Norbert College logoThe St. Norbert College men’s hockey team kept its hopes for the outright Peters Cup championship alive in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) with a 4-1 win over Milwaukee School of Engineering at Kern Center.

The Green Knights (20-2-2, 16-2-1 NCHA) have one regular-season game remaining, hosting MSOE on Friday night in De Pere.  In order to capture the No. 1 seeding for the league playoffs, St. Norbert must win tonight and hope Adrian College drops a point in its two-game series this weekend at College of St. Scholastica.

St. Norbert also clinched its 18th 20-win season in the last 20 years with the win.

Wisconsin hockey round-up

In a top-10 showdown at LaBahn Arena on Friday night, 3rd-ranked Wisconsin skated to a scoreless tie against 7th-ranked Minnesota-Duluth.

The Badgers (21-4-4, 16-4-3-1 WCHA) took the extra point in the standings, defeating the Bulldogs (17-7-5, 12-7-4-2) 2-1, in the shootout.

The two teams wrap up their series tonight at 7:30.  Prior to the game, the Badgers will honor their five seniors.

Badger men fall

At University Park, Pennsylvania, the Wisconsin Badgers jumped out to a 2-1 first period lead, then saw Penn State score four straight goals to pull out a 5-2 win, leaving the Badgers without a Big Ten win.

Cameron Hughes scored both Wisconsin goals but the Badgers fell to 2-17-4, 0-7-2 in he Big Ten.

The two teams wrap up the series this afternoon.

Division 3

Defending National Champion St. Norbert College is spiraling in the wrong direction as the regular season winds down.

The Green Knights dropped their 4th straight, falling 3-1 to St. Scholastica at the Cornerstone Ice Center.

In Appleton, No. 6 Adrian College skated to a 6-1 win over Lawrence University in NCHA play.

St. Norbert headed back to NCAA hockey tournament

The number-1 ranked St. Norbert College hockey team extended its winning streak to eight-straight games, knocking off St. Scholastica 5-1 to capture the NCHA’s Harris Cup on Saturday night.  The win guarantee’s the Green Knights a return trip to the NCAA Division 3 hockey tournament after they earned an automatic berth with its fifth straight NCHA postseason title.

The NCAA pairings are expected to be announced later tonight.

Eau Claire wins National Hockey Title

The UW-Eau Claire men’s hockey team fell behind 2-0, then bounced back with 4-straight goals to beat Oswego State (N.Y.) 5-3 in the NCAA Division III championship in Lake Placid over the weekend.

The Blugolds were making their 1st Frozen Four appearance in school history, while the Lakers were returning to the championship game for the 2nd time in as many years.

It’s the 9th National Championship in school history and the 2nd national championship game for Eau Claire Hockey, the 1st coming in 1984 when they won the NAIA title.

NCHA, WIAC agree on early departure

The NCHA and the WIAC announced the two conferences have reached an agreement that will result in the WIAC members leaving the NCHA following the 2012-13 season, a year earlier than originally planned.

The conferences elected to expedite the departure of the WIAC members due primarily to the scheduling complications that would result if the WIAC members remained through the 201314 academic year. 

The WIAC members withdrawing from the NCHA are UW-Eau Claire, UW-River Falls, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Stout and UW-Superior.

St. Norbert opens NCAA Division 3 hockey playoffs on Wednesday

The St. Norbert College Green Knight men’s hockey team earned the top seeding in the WEst Region of the NCAA Division III Men’s Ice Hockey Tournament for the tenth time in 11 years will still play a first-round game Wednesday against the University of St. Thomas.

The Green Knights and Tommies will face off at 7pm Wednesday at the Cornerstone Community Center.  The St. Norbert-St. Thomas winner will face either Gustavus Adolphus College (16-6-5) or the Milwaukee School of Engineering )22-6-1) in a national quarterfinal on Saturday.  The winner of Saturday’s quarterfinal will advance to the NCAA Division III Frozen Four on March 16-17 at Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid, New York.

The Green Knights (17-5-5) won the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association regular-season and Peters Cup championships.  St. Norbert is 10-1-1 in its last 12 games, and won the Peters Cup championship on Saturday with a 4-0 win over UW-Stevens Point.  The Green Knights are 10-2-1 at the Cornerstone Community Center this season.

This is St. Norbert’s 13th tournament appearance.  The Green Knights are 18-10-1 all-time in the NCAA tournament and won the 2008 and 2011 national championships. 

The Tommies are making their 15th NCAA Division III Tournament appearance, and are 9-17-4 all-time in the tournament.  St. Thomas finished as national runner-up in 2000 and 2005.

St. Norbert College looking for a new hockey home

St. Norbert College is looking for a new hockey conference.  The five Division 3 UW schools in the Northern Collegiate Hockey

Association (NCHA) have informed St. Norbert College and St. Scholastica that they’re leaving for the WIAC to start the 2014-15 season. 

The five UW schools playing in NCHA are River Falls, Eau Claire, Stevens Point, Stout and Superior.  Their eventual departure leaves St. Norbert and St. Scholastica as the two remaining members in the NCHA.  The seven current NCHA members have been playing together since the 1996-97 season. 

St. Norbert College Athletic Director Tim Bald said they want closure as soon as possible, without being hasty.

Five of the current seven teams in the NCHA have captured NCAA Division 3 titles.  It’s a good hockey league with a lot of talent.  That’s why Green Knights coach said he’d be surprised if they didn’t stay together, just in a different league. [Read more…]
