Packers hit bump in the road in Los Angeles

November 4, 2019 By Bill Scott

Matt LaFleur

Just when everyone was telling the Green Bay Packers how good they are, they went out and laid an egg, falling to the Los Angeles Chargers 26-11 on Sunday afternoon, bring to an end their four-game winning streak.

Packers fans out-numbered Chargers fans in a visiting stadium, but the Packers played their worst offensive game of the season and the defense and special teams weren’t much better.

The Packers had no answers for the Chargers defensive pressure and any adjustments came way too late to make a difference.

The Packers offense had been making steady progress and playing at a high level.  Then they got their top receiver, Davante Adams, back from a turf toe injury that saw him miss four games.

The Packers only had three possessions in the first half and they stalled out for a number of reasons, including penalties. [Read more…]

Adams returns to practice

October 31, 2019 By Bill Scott

Davante Adams

Pro Bowl wide receiver Davante Adams is back on the practice field again, trying to work his way back into the lineup when the Green Bay Packers face the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday in L.A.

It was a walkthrough on Wednesday, but Adams returned to the field again on Thursday, this time in helmet and pads, a good indicator that Adams could be ready to play on Sunday.

“We’ll take it day by day and see how he does,” coach Matt LaFleur said.  “When he’s ready to go, we’ll be ecstatic.”

Adams missed the last four games with a turf toe injury.

Packers announce roster moves

After releasing TE Evan Baylis and WR Darrius Shepherd earlier in the week, the Packers signed both players to their practice squad.  The Packers released WR Keon Hatcher from the practice squad.

Packers Hall of Fame announces 2020 class

October 31, 2019 By Bill Scott

Charles Woodson

The Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame Inc. will induct former Green Bay Packers cornerbacks Al Harris and Charles Woodson at the 50th Hall of Fame Induction Banquet, which will be held April 18, 2020.

Woodson was selected fourth overall in the first round of the 1998 NFL Draft by the Oakland Raiders after winning the 1997 Heisman Trophy as a junior at the University of Michigan.  After eight seasons in Oakland, Woodson came to the Green Bay Packers as a free agent in 2006, where he spent the next seven years of his career, posting 38 interceptions and 115 passes defensed.

Woodson was selected to four straight Pro Bowls (2008-11) while with the Packers and led the league in interceptions in 2009 and 2011.  He holds [Read more…]

Evers establishes Complete Count Committee for 2020 Census

October 29, 2019 By WRN Contributor

A newly created committee will be making sure all Wisconsinites complete the 2020 census. In Milwaukee Monday, Governor Tony Evers issued an executive order creating the Complete Count Committee, in what he said will be a statewide effort.

“I understand the strength in numbers, and clearly we want to have a good sign-up here in Milwaukee, and Racine, Kenosha, Beloit, Green Bay and all across the state. But we do have pockets of people outstate who are not participating in the census,” Evers said.

The committee will work to educate people on the importance of the census, develop outreach strategies to reach hard-to-count communities, and identify and reduce barriers that impede participation in the census process.

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett said it’s critical that every Wisconsin resident is counted. “Because when we count our people, we are saying to the federal government, and we are saying to our residents, ‘you matter.’ And all of our residents matter to us, and that’s why we take this so seriously.”

“Ensuring a fair and accurate count in the 2020 census is essential to the future of our state, as it determines how more than $600 billion in federal funding will be distributed and how Wisconsin’s next electoral maps will be drawn,” Evers said.

Rodgers passed for 305 yards and three touchdowns for the Packers, who jumped out to a 14-0 lead, only to see the Chiefs battle back to take a 17-14 halftime lead.

Jones caught seven passes for 159 yards and two touchdowns and added 67 more yards on the ground.

Matt Moore threw for 267 yards and two touchdowns in place of the injured Patrick Mahomes.

Damien Williams tied the game in the fourth quarter at 24-all with a three-yard TD run.  The Chiefs fell to 5-3 with the loss.

Adams expected to sit another week (AUDIO)

October 25, 2019 By Bill Scott

Davante Adams – File Photo

A week ago, veteran wide receiver Davante Adams said his toe injury felt a million times better, but he still wasn’t ready to play against Oakland.

Thursday, Adams said this week, his turf toe feels 2 million times better but he admitted he just doesn’t know where things are at yet.

Adams stretched with his teammates the last two days, but that’s about all he did.  He said he’s just not fully recovered yet.

The Green Bay Packers would love to get Adams back as soon as possible, but they also don’t want to rush him.

“I want him to come back when he feels healthy,” quarterback Aaron Rodgers said. [Read more…]

Rodgers career best game leads Packers past Raiders

October 21, 2019 By Bill Scott

Aaron Rodgers

The Green Bay Packers offense, under new head coach Matt LaFleur is really starting to heat up with Aaron Rodgers driving the ship.

Rodgers threw for 429 yards and five touchdowns and he ran for another as the Packers rolled to a 42-24 win over the Oakland Raiders on Sunday at Lambeau Field.

Rodgers completed 25 of 31 passes to eight different receivers, who all finished with at least two catches.  And he did it again, for the third week in a row, without his top target Davante Adams, who is sidelined with turf toe.

The turning point in the game came late in the first half when the Raiders were driving for a potential touchdown.  It would have given Oakland a 17-14 lead.  Instead, Raiders quarterback Derek Carr, while reaching the ball towards the goal line, fumbled and the ball went into and out of the end zone.  By rule, a touch back gave the ball to the Packers at the 20-yard line. Sack celebrations a thing of the past in Green Bay

October 18, 2019 By Bill Scott

Za’Darius Smith

Za’Darius Smith is second on the Green Bay Packers team with six quarterback sacks and each one has drawn a more elaborate sack celebration.

“I had one for this week,” Smith said Thursday.  “It was going to be nice.  Coach (Matt LaFleur), he felt situations during that time could affect the punt team or (if) they want to go for fourth down, I’m taking up too much time.”

So for now, the sack celebrations are history.

Smith came up with the sleepy-time celebration that he unveiled Monday against the Lions after he missed a meeting last week.  He was fined and decided to let everyone know he got caught napping with a little on-field celebration.

Za’Darius Smith has six sacks in six games this season.  Teammate Preston Smith leads the way wit

h seven and even without a sack celebration, both should continue to cause havoc with the opponents passing game. [Read more…]

Packers add receiver help, sign Grant

October 17, 2019 By Bill Scott

Jace Sternberger

The Green Bay Packers could be thin at wide receiver this week when they face the Oakland Raiders, so they went out and added some veteran depth at the position this week.

The Packers signed sixth-year wide receiver Ryan Grant, who has 123 receptions for 1,333 yards and seven touchdowns.   A former fifth round pick by the Washington Redskins in 2014, had career-high totals of 45 catches for 573 yards and four touchdowns with the Redskins in 2017.

Grant went on to sign a four-year, $29 million free agent deal with the Baltimore Ravens in 2018, but he was let go when he failed his physical.  Grant then signed a one-year deal with the Indianapolis Colts for $5 million.  He caught 35 passes for the Colts before moving on this season, signing with the Oakland Raiders.

With the Raiders, Grant caught four passes for 14 yards in two games this season before being released. [Read more…]
