Brewers blank Dodgers, take 2-1 lead in NLCS

October 16, 2018 By Bill Scott

Jhoulys Chacin

The Milwaukee Brewers blanked the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-0 in game 3 of the NLCS, giving the Brewers a 2-1 advantage in the best-of-seven series.

The Brewers have now pitched shutouts in three of their six postseason games.

Jhoulys Chacin tossed 5 1/3 innings of shutout ball to start, allowing just three hits while walking two and striking out six.  The Brewers used a total of five pitchers in the win, capped off by Jeremy Jeffress.  Jeffress loaded the bases in the ninth and then pitched out of the jam by striking out the last two hitters to preserve the victory.

The Brewers jumped out in front in the very first inning.  Christian Yelich drew a one-out walk and Ryan Braun doubled him home.

The Brewers wouldn’t score again until the six when Travis Shaw tripled and scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0.

The Brewers scored their final two runs in the seventh when Erik Kratz doubled and Orlando Arcia homered to right.

The Brewers will look to go up 3-1 in the series against the Dodgers with game four on Tuesday night.  Gio Gonzalez (0-0, 4.50) pitches for the Brewers.  The Dodgers will send Rich Hill (0-0, 4.15) to the mound.

Monday’s win guaranteed at least one more game at Miller Park, but it also put the Brewers in a position to win the series in Los Angeles.

Gonzalez will start series opener

October 12, 2018 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers will send left-hander Gio Gonzalez to the mound in game one of the National League Championship Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Miller Park.

Since being acquired from Washington on August 31, Gonzalez went 3-0 with a 2.13 ERA in five starts for the Brewers.

“We like the matchup against their lineup,” said manager Craig Counsell.  “It’s no secret that we’re going to use our pitching a little differently than the traditionalists would like.  And so far, the first matchup that we liked was Gio on the mound.

Gonzalez didn’t face the Dodgers this season. [Read more…]

Brewers 90th win draws them closer to playoffs

Eric Thames tripled and scored on a throwing error in the eighth inning and the Milwaukee Brewers went on to knock off the St. Louis Cardinals 6-4 at Busch Stadium in St. Louis on Monday night.

Ryan Braun homered and Christian Yelich drove in a pair of runs as the Brewers won for the fourth time in their last five games and for the 90th (90-67) time this season.  They moved three games in front of the Cardinals for the top wildcard spot in the National League.  The Brewers also drew to within 1 1/2 games of the Central Division leading Cubs in the Central Division after the Cubs fell to the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-1.

The Brewers went with a bullpen by committee to secure this win.  It started with Dan Jennings getting the first out of the game by retiring Matt Carpenter for his only batter faced, and it finished with Corey Knebel slamming the door in the 9th for his 16th save.  In between, the Brewers used seven other pitchers for a total of nine for the game.  Corbin Burnes (7-0) got two outs for the win. Brewers power past Nationals

September 3, 2018 By Bill Scott

Christian Yelich clubbed a grand slam and Keon Broxton added a three-run homer during a seven-run fifth inning as the Milwaukee Brewers rolled to a 9-4 win over the Washington Nationals in D.C.

Mike Moustakas had a two-run single in the first inning for Milwaukee, which took two-of-three in the series.

Brandon Woodruff picked up the win with four scoreless innings of relief.  Junior Guerra made it through just three innings, allowing five hits, two walks and four runs.  His ERA climbed to 7.62 since mid-July.  It would be unbelievable to think that the Brewers would send Guerra out for another start.  They have a number of options, including lefty Gio Gonzalez, who the Brewers acquired in a trade last week.

Yelich improved his average to .316 with 27 home runs and 81 RBI.

The Brewers open a three-game series against the Chicago Cubs at Miller Park on Monday afternoon.  Zach Davies (2-5, 5.23) gets the start for the Brewers.  Cole Hamels (4-0, 0.69) gets the nod for the Cubs.
