Badgers knock off No. 6 Purdue, fans storm the court

February 16, 2018 By Bill Scott

Frank Kaminsky

Fans usually don’t storm the court at Wisconsin.  The Badgers usually win at a healthy clip and such an idea would never enter the minds of the fans.

But this hasn’t been your normal season in Madison.  The Badgers were thinned by graduation and injuries with not much left in the cupboard.

Needless to say, it’s been a long year for the Badgers, entering play with a 11-16 overall record and 4-10 Big Ten mark, there hasn’t been much to write home about.  So enter 2015 National Player of the Year Frank Kaminsky.  He led the Badgers to back-to-back Final Fours in his final two seasons on campus and has gone on to a nice career in the NBA.

The UW decided it would be a great idea to honor Kaminsky by retiring his number-44, raising it high to the rafters of the Kohl Center.  It might not have had to do with all of the Badgers play, but it certainly had something to do with it and the Badgers would go on to knock off No. 6 Purdue 57-53 before 17,287 at the Kohl Center.

When the final horn went off, many of the excited fans flooded the court to celebrate with their team. [Read more…]

Poor start dooms Badger hoops

February 2, 2018 By Bill Scott

Just when you didn’t think it could get any worse, the Wisconsin Badgers got off to another slow start and fell to Northwestern 60-52 at the Kohl Center on Thursday night.

Northwestern jumped out to a 18-1 lead, on their way to a much-needed victory.

The Badgers (10-14, 3-8 Big Ten) were coming off a bad loss to Nebraska on Monday, then laid an egg early against the Wildcats on Thursday night.

Northwestern (14-10, 5-6) didn’t do much in the second half, but their lead was enough to survive.  Junior center Derek Pardon finished with 17 points to lead the Wildcats.  Scottie Lindsey chipped in with 14.

Junior forward Khalil Iverson had 15 points and a career high nine rebounds to lead the Badgers.  Ethan Happ added 14 points, Aleem Ford had 12 and freshman guard Brad Davison finished with 10 points.

The Badgers shot a season low 32.8% from the field in Big Ten play.  They hit just 29.4% in the second half.

Sophomore guard Brevin Pritzl’s shooting slump continued.  He finished 0 for 11 and 0 for 9 from three-point range.  The Badgers as a team were 7 of 26 (26.9%) from distance for the game.

The Badgers crawled back to within six at 52-46 with 1:19 left to play, but having to foul late, they watched the Wildcats go 8 for 8 at the free throw line in that final stretch.

The Badgers play next at Maryland on Sunday.

Badgers tripped up at Iowa

January 24, 2018 By Bill Scott

Khalil Iverson

The Iowa Hawkeyes entered Tuesday night’s Big Ten matchup against Wisconsin with a 1-7 Big Ten record and five double-digit conference losses.  But after being blown out by league-leading Purdue, the Hawkeyes rebounded for a 85-67 win over the Badgers at Carver Hawkeye Arena.

The Badgers missed their first nine shots and fell behind 9-0, a hole they would never be able to crawl out of.

Coach Greg Gard knows what he has with his offense.  They’re going to struggle.  But he wasn’t happy with the effort on the defensive end.  Gard said, “We are not built offensively to make it a shootout.”

The Badgers (10-11, 3-5 Big Ten) were coming off a 25-point win over Illinois last Friday, but lost for the fourth time in the last five games with all four losses coming on the road.

Ethan Happ had 21 points and 10 rebounds and Khalil Iverson added 17 points and seven boards.  Charlie Thomas chipped in with 10 points off the bench, but he struggled on defense too. [Read more…]

Badgers extend win streak in win over Chicago State

December 28, 2017 By Bill Scott

The Wisconsin Badgers pushed their win streak to three games with a 82-70 home win over Chicago State in men’s college basketball action at the Kohl Center.

Ethan Happ scored 18 points and pulled down 12 rebounds and Khalil Iverson added 17 points in the win.  Freshman Brad Davison added 15 points, but his injured left shoulder continues to be a problem.

Davison left the game twice last night, the second time with just over five minutes left to play on a drive to the basket.  Davison went to the locker room before managing to return to the court.  Davison has left games at least four times now, but this is the first time he had to leave twice.  The question is, will the Badgers be able to count on Davison the rest of the way with the start of Big Ten play just a week away.

Wisconsin shot 51% from the field and 35% (7-20) from three-point range.

The Badgers will face UMass-Lowell on Saturday, then host Indiana comes to the Kohl Center next Tuesday to face the Badgers as Big Ten play resumes.

Chicago State fell to 2-14 with the loss.

Badgers rebound to win at Penn State

December 5, 2017 By Bill Scott

Khalil Iverson

After suffering an embarrassing 83-58 loss to Ohio State on Saturday at the Kohl Center, the Wisconsin Badgers took to the road and pulled out a 64-63 victory over Penn State in State College, Pennsylvania.

The Badgers built a 17-point lead in the second half, but had to survive a Penn State second half comeback, which saw Tony Carr miss a three-pointer in the final seconds that would have won it for the Nittany Lions.

Khalil Iverson, who went scoreless in the loss to Ohio State on Saturday, led the Badgers with 16 points and five rebounds on Monday night.

Freshman Nate Reuvers came off the bench with Ethan Happ in foul trouble and added 11 points and four rebounds for the Badgers (4-5, 1-1 Big Ten).  Happ fouled out with 14.7 seconds left to play, finishing with nine points, 10 rebounds and three assists.

Freshman guard Brad Davison didn’t score and fouled out with 43 seconds left.

Mike Watkins led Penn State (7-3, 1-1) with 22 points, eight rebounds and seven blocks.  Carr added 16 points.

The Nittany Lions hit 12 of 23 three-pointers in a win over Iowa on Saturday but made just 2 of 14 from distance against the Badgers.

The Badgers are in Philadelphia to face Temple on Wednesday night.

Badgers drop third straight with another late game defeat

November 22, 2017 By Bill Scott

Ethan Happ

The Wisconsin Badgers dropped their third straight game, falling 72-70 to UCLA in the consolation game of the Hall of Fame Classic in Kansas City.

The Badgers led by as many as six in the final minutes but turned the ball over in three of their last eight possessions, scoring just five points during that stretch.  It allowed the Bruins to call a timeout with 13 seconds left to set up a final play.  Aaron Holiday’s drive and score with nine-tenths of a second left won it for the Bruins.

The Badgers attempted  long in bound pass from Brad Davison to Ethan Happ that was busted up as time expired.

The Badgers fell to 2-3 with all three losses coming against ranked opponents (Xavier, Baylor and UCLA).

Ethan Happ led the Badgers with 19 points, nine rebounds and five assists.  Khalil Iverson, D’Mitrik Trice and Brad Davison added 14 each.

The Badgers return home to host instate rival Milwaukee on Friday night at the Kohl Center.

Iverson leads Badgers past Yale

November 13, 2017 By Bill Scott

Khalil Iverson

Khalil Iverson scored a college career high 17 points on 8 of 9 shooting to lead the Wisconsin Badgers to a 89-61 win over Yale at the Kohl Center on Sunday evening.

Wisconsin (2-0) built a 43-22 halftime lead and Iverson hit 6 of 7 from the field for 13 points to lead the way.

Iverson played much better than he did in last week’s opener, where he didn’t attempt and committed four turnovers in 22 minutes.  In that game, Iverson was playing just one night after the three-year anniversary of his fathers’ death and admitted it still bothers him.

The Badgers hit 3 of their first 5 three-pointers but then struggled the rest of the night and finished 7 of 22.  But the Badgers scored 46 points inside on 31 of 61 (50.8%) shooting and converted 20 of 26 free throws.

Ethan Happ recorded his second straight double-double, finishing with 12 points and 11 rebounds.  He felt some discomfort in his left knee in the final minute of the first half but said he felt fine in the second half while using a protective sleeve on his leg. [Read more…]

The Badgers (26-9) converted 64.4% of their free throws for the season, but hit 19 of 25 (76%) as a team on Thursday night.

A sloppy start for the Wisconsin Badgers saw head coach Greg Gard go to his bench early.  The result, a 69-64 victory over Chicago State at the Kohl Center.

Ethan Happ, Vitto Brown and Zack Showalter were all pulled from the game in the first two minutes and the bench led the Badgers to victory.  Wisconsin’s reserves scored 18 of the Badgers 32 first-half points.  The reserves finished with 36 points, 23 rebounds and 11 assists.

Sophomore Khalil Iverson led that reserve group with 11 points, five rebounds, two assists and a block.

The Minnesota Gophers played once again without three of their top players, after they were suspended for the remainder of the season.  The Wisconsin Badgers jumped out early, built a comfortable lead and cruised to a 62-49 victory at Williams Arena.

Wisconsin coach Greg Gard said his team played OK, and he would have liked to see more efficiency on offense.

What he got was pretty good balance from his team, with six players scoring at least six points as the Badgers (20-10, 12-5), won for the 11th time in the last 12 games and are tied with Michigan State (25-5, 12-5) for second place in the Big Ten with one game left to play.

Wisconsin will face one more road game on Sunday, at Purdue (23-7, 11-6).  But the victory over the Gophers assured the Badgers of a top four finish for the 15th straight season.

Bronson Koenig had 14 points (12 in the 1st half) to lead the Badgers.  Vitto Brown added 12 points, Zak Showalter had eight points and Nigel Hayes added six points and seven rebounds. [Read more…]
