Packers use defense to beat Giants 23-16

The Green Bay Packers offense is usually the leading factor to their winning ways.  But for most of the first four games this season, it’s the Packers defense that has led the way, including Sunday nights 23-16 win over the New York Giants.

The Packers played without five starters on defense in their win over the Lions and were missing both starting corners.  Sam Shields remains in the concussion protocol and Damarious was scratched from the lineup two hours before kickoff last night with a groin injury.

Quinten Rollins, LaDarius Gunter and Micah Hyde were left to cover the Giants receivers Odell Beckham Jr., Victory Cruz and Sterling Shepherd.  Most thought the game would be a shootout.

Instead, the Packers offense started fast but struggled to maintain any consistency and it was up to the defense to save the day.  That’s exactly what they did, holding Beckham to five catches for 56 yards.  Cruz had one reception and Shepherd had two catches for 14 yards. [Read more…]

Packers looking for 6th straight win

November 23, 2012 By Bill Scott

After a 2-3 start to the season and a looming trip to unbeaten (at the time) Houston, some people wrote off the Green Bay Packers (7-3).  Since then, the Packers have rattled off 5-straight wins and will be looking to make it six Sunday night when they visit the New York Giants (6-4).

As the Packers have been ascending towards the top of the NFC playoff picture, the Giants have been descending.  New York lost 2-straight before last weeks bye week and people are starting to question their offense. It starts with Eli Manning.  Manning has not lived up to his name completing just 56% of his passes for 340-yards, 0 touchdowns, and 3-interceptions in the losses.  The Packers are not buying into his struggles though…

Beckum goes down with knee injury

February 6, 2012 By Bill Scott

Travis Beckum had just started coming on for the New York Giants, but he didn’t get to hang around long enough in Super Bowl XLVI

Travis Beckum

to make any kind of impact.

The Milwaukee native and former Wisconsin Badger standout, suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in the second quarter, ending his night early.  Beckum now has several months of rehab in front of him, which will likely cost him the entire next season.

Beckum’s season has been rather uneventful, but he had been used more in the playoffs, including as a split receiver.

The Giants beat the patriots 21-17 to win Super Bowl XLVI.

Giants followed the path of the Packers to win Super Bowl

February 6, 2012 By Bill Scott

A year ago, the Green Bay Packers needed help to get into the post season.  Not only did they get that help, but the Packers

Eli Manning

played their best football in the playoffs and went on to beat Pittsburgh to win the Super Bowl.

One year later, the New York Giants sat at 7-7, hardly with a pulse, the Giants put it together down the stretch and went on to win Super Bowl XLVI 21-17 over the New England Patriots.

The Giants finished the regular season with a 9-7 record, hardly the record one would associate with a Super Bowl Champion.  But for the second straight year, the NFL title didn’t go to the team with the best record or home field advantage, it went to the team playing the best football when it counted.

Mike McCarthy said before this season started and repeated it several times that the preferred path to the Super Bowl was by winning the division and securing home field advantage throughout the playoffs.  There’s nobody that was arguing that point either.  But the winner in 5 of the last 7 Super Bowls didn’t have a first round bye, including the New York Giants this year.

New England did earn the top seed in the AFC, but the Patriots (15-4) finished one-game short of the championship.

Eli Manning won his second Super Bowl MVP award and may have cemented his spot in the Hall of Fame when he retires.  He now has one more Super Bowl win than big brother Peyton and they might not be his last either.  Six times, Eli Manning brought his team from behind this year to win.  He set an NFL record with 15 fourth quarter touchdown passes.

Elite?  He certainly belongs in that class.  But you can’t argue his ability to win big games after he added to that number against the Patriots.

Packers to host Giants on Sunday

January 9, 2012 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers first playoff challenge will come from the New York Giants in the NFC Divisional Playoffs at Lambeau Field on Sunday (3:30pm).

While the Packers had a bye this weekend, the Giants (10-7) advanced with a 24-2 win over the Atlanta Falcons in an NFC wild-card game on Sunday afternoon.

The Packers and Giants last met in the postseason in 2007 when the Giants pulled out a 23-20 overtime victory. [Read more…]
