Big Ten suspends Wisconsin’s Ahcan

January 19, 2021 By Bill Scott

The Big Ten Conference has suspended Wisconsin Badger hockey forward Roman Ahcan for one game for an incident that occurred in the second game of a two-game series against Arizona State on Sunday night.

Ahcan received a five minute major and game misconduct for contact to the head when he took a run at former Badger and current Arizona State forward Sean Dhooghe.

Ahcan will have to sit out Thursday night’s Big Ten series opener at Penn State.  Ahcan has a goal and five assists in 10 games for the Badgers this season.

Wisconsin hockey loses forward, adds a goaltender via transfers

April 6, 2020 By Bill Scott

Former Wisconsin hockey forward Sean Dhooghe entered the transfer portal last week and will leave the program.  Dhooghe tweeted late last week that he’ll play his final season at Arizona State.

It’s not known at this time if Dhooghe will have to sit out a year under NCAA transfer rules, or if he’ll be allowed to play immediately.  The NCAA is considering allowing athletes to transfer once during their career without penalty, which could go into place for next season.

The Badgers beat Arizona State twice during the 2019-20 season but Dhooghe sat out both games with a knee injury.  He didn’t appear in any of the team’s final eight games, even though he was physically ready to return.

Wisconsin and Arizona State could face off again next season, as part of the field for the inaugural Holiday Face-Off at Milwaukee’s Fiserv Forum in December.  The pairings for that event haven’t been announced yet. [Read more…]

Hockey Badgers start new year with exhibition victory

January 2, 2020 By Bill Scott

The Wisconsin men’s hockey team (7-10-1, 2-7-1-1 Big Ten) kicked off the new year with a 3-2 win over the U.S. Under-18 team on New Year’s Day.

The Badgers got goals from Dominick Mersch, Sean Dhooghe and Jack Gorniak.

Mersch scored first for the Badgers in the first period off of a feed from Gorniak and Ryder Donovan.  The US NTDP responded back with two unanswered goals in the first, including one on the power play.

The Badgers then got goals from Dhooghe and Gorniak within a minute of each other in the second period and they held on the rest of the way for the win.

All three Badger goalies saw action against the US NTDP with Daniel Lebedeff recording a team high 12 saves alongside Jack Berry and Johan Blomquist pairing for two scoreless periods to end the game.

The Badgers are 6-2-0 against the U.S. Under-18 team all-time.

Wisconsin returns to Madison and will resume Big Ten play this Friday and Saturday night against the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Kalynuk named Wisconsin men’s hockey team captain

March 26, 2019 By Bill Scott

Sophomore defenseman Wyatt Kalynuk, who was a second-team All-Big Ten pick last season, will serve as the Wisconsin men’s hockey team’s captain next season.

“We are really excited to have these three lead our program,” Coach Tony Granato said.  “From the second they’ve gotten here they’ve done everything right.  All three have gotten off to great starts in their first two years with our program and they’ve been excellent in the classroom.  They are great leaders and big parts of our program.  We are excited about their leadership and the future of our program.”

Kalynuk will lead the team, while sophomore forwards Tarek Baker and Sean Dhooghe will help as the team’s alternate captains.

Kalynuk posted his second straight 25-point season this past year, and collected nine goals to rank second on the team.  His 25 points were one point off the team lead, while his 116 shots made him the only skater with over 100 shots on goal.

Baker (Verona, Wis.) finished his 2018-19 season with seven goals and 20 points, ranking second on the team with 91 shots on goal.

Dhooghe (Aurora, Ill.) led the Badgers as the only double-digit goal scorer with 15 tallies.  He shared the team lead with 26 points..  He also was tied for third in the Big Ten with eight power-play goals.

Hockey Badgers earn another weekend split

November 27, 2017 By Bill Scott

Seamus Malone

After falling behind early, the Wisconsin men’s hockey team rebounded to knock off Mercyhurst (5-5-2, 2-2-2 Atlantic Hockey) on Sunday at the Kohl Center.

Wisconsin (9-6-2, 3-2-1 Big Ten) outshot the Lakers 45-26 while recording 21 blocks to MU’s 14.

It was the Badgers’ first comeback victory this season, as the Lakers opened the scoring at the 16:23 mark of the first period.  Mercyhurst took a 1-0 lead into the first period intermission.

Badger freshman forward Sean Dhooghe scored his second career goal at 1:31 of the second period on the power play.  Dhooghe was crashing the net and jammed home a rebound to tie the game 1-1.

Wisconsin took the lead for good late in the second period when junior Seamus Malone picked up his own rebound and found the back of the net to make it 2-1.

Will Johnson and Jake Linhart scored third period goals for the Badgers to close out the scoring.

Malone ended with a goal and two assists, ending the weekend with four points.

Sophomore goaltender Jack Berry recorded 24 saves for his second win of the season.

The Badgers lost 3-2 to the Lakers on Saturday.  They return to Big Ten play this weekend, heading to Minneapolis for Friday-Saturday games against the rival Gophers.

Badger hockey signs three

April 20, 2017 By Bill Scott

The Wisconsin men’s hockey team announced the signing of three student-athletes to National Letters of Intent on Thursday.  They include defensemen Joshua Ess (Lakeville, Minnesota) and Wyatt Kalynuk (Virden, Manitoba), as well as forward Linus Weissbach (Bothenburg, Sweden).

Ess, a 5’11, 185-pound defenseman, will arrive in Madison after his senior year at Lakeville south High School in Lakeville, Minnesota.  He finished his senior year with eight goals and 28 points in 23 regular season games.  He then scored three goals and five points in three sectional playoff games, before adding two goals and an assist in the state tournament, to finish with 13 goals and 36 points in 29 games.

Following a high school campaign that finished with an Associated Press All-State Third Team nod, Ess skated in two games with the USHL’s Cedar Rapids Rough Riders, collecting one assist. [Read more…]
