Badgers salvage shooting win in series finale at MSU

The Wisconsin men’s hockey team, after falling 4-1 at Michigan State on Friday night, recorded a season high 54 shots on Saturday and skated to a 2-2 tie in the series finale against the Spartans on Saturday.  Junior Max Zimmer scored in the sudden-death shootout to give the Badgers the extra point in the Big Ten standings.

Senior forward Will Johnson scored his eighth goal of the season give minutes into the game to give the Badgers a 1-0 lead.

The Spartans evened the game 1-1 early in the second, before Wisconsin sophomore winger Linus Weissbach banged in a loose rebound in the crease past MSU goaltender Drew DeRidder to give the Badgers the lead once again.

Spartans winger Mitchell Lewandowski knotted the game up early in the third frame, and despite several promising chances in front of the MSU net, the Badgers couldn’t secure the game-winner to deny overtime.

Junior goaltender Jack Berry made 31 stops in-goal for the Badgers.

Wisconsin returns to Madison and will host fourth ranked and Big Ten leading Ohio State at the Kohl Center.  Saturday night, the Badgers will honor legendary Badger Mark Johnson by retiring his number 10 during a pregame ceremony.

Badger hockey team sweeps #12 Boston College

Sophomore forward Linus Weissbach broke a 4-4 tie 6:32 into the third period and the Wisconsin Badger men’s hockey team (2-0-0) knocked off 12th ranked Boston College (0-2-0) on Saturday night at the Kohl Center.

The Badgers swept the Eagles after pulling out a 3-0 win on Friday night.

The Badgers scored just 38-seconds into the game on a Sean Dhooghe tally, only to see Boston College tie the game at 1:20 of the first.

The Badgers never trailed in the contest, going on to build a 4-1 lead at one point in the second period before the Eagles rebounded to the game.

Sophomore defenseman Wyatt Kalynuk led the Badgers with two goals and an assist, while sophomore forward Tarek Baker had a goal and two helpers.

Junior goaltender Jack Berry stopped 28 shots for the victory.

Wisconsin will take its first road trip of the season on Friday at Clarkson and Saturday at St. Lawrence in upstate New York.

Berry named Big Ten’s second star

Wisconsin Sophomore goaltender Jack Berry (Holly, Michigan) has been named Big Ten Hockey’s second star this week.  Berry had 40 saves to help the Badgers hand top-ranked Notre Dame their first Big Ten Conference loss of the season at the United Center in Chicago on Sunday.

The Irish saw their 16-game win streak come to an end.

Berry’s 40 saves equal the sixth-highest save total for a Badger goaltender in a shutout in school history.  It was the first shutout of Notre Dame since Nov. 26, 2016.

Berry improved to 4-3 on the season with a 2.32 goals-against average and .919 save percentage.  He earned his third career weekly award and second of the season.

The Badgers are back on home ice this weekend to face Penn State.  The Nittany Lions were swept by Michigan last weekend.

Hockey Badgers fall at Penn State

The number-15 Wisconsin men’s hockey team got the new year off to a slow start, falling 5-1 to number-14 Penn State on Friday night at Pegula Ice Arena.

The Badgers (10-10-2, 4-6-1-0 Big Ten) allowed a power-play and short-handed goal in the loss.  Penn State (12-7-2, 5-4-2 Big Ten) outshot the Badgers 32-26.

The Nittany Lions took a 2-0 lead by the 9:00 mark of the first period, scoring one of its goals on the man advantage 1:36 into the game.

Penn State, leading 2-0 after one period, scored 11 seconds into the second period and added a fourth goal before Wisconsin made a change in goal.  Kyle Hayton came on in relief of sophomore Jack Berry.

Hayton made 17 saves the rest of the way and didn’t allow a goal.  Penn State would get its fifth goal into an empty net.

Freshman forward Tarek Baker scored the Badgers’ only tally at the 11:54 mark of the final period.

The two teams close out the series at 6 p.m. (CT) on Saturday night.

Hockey Badgers blow 2-0 lead, fall to Irish

The 12th ranked Wisconsin hockey team led 2-0 in the final period before falling to 4th ranked Notre Dame 3-2 in their series opener at the Kohl Center on Friday night.

The Badgers (10-8-2, 4-4-1-0 Big Ten) outshot the Fighting Irish 36-32, but Notre Dame (15-3-1, 9-0-0-0) capitalized on the momentum from six Wisconsin penalty kills to extend their win streak to 12 games.

The Badgers got goals from senior captain Cameron Hughes and freshman forward Tarek Baker.

Notre Dame scored all three of their goals in the third period.

Sophomore goaltender Jack Berry had 29 saves in goal for the Badgers, who outblocked the Irish 23-12.  The Badgers finished 1-for-3 on the power play.

The two teams wrap up the series at the Kohl Center tonight (7 p.m.).

Badger women win

Sam Cogan’s first-period goal held up in Wisconsin’s 1-0 win over St. Cloud State.  Kristen Campbell finished with 16 saves for the Badgers, who improved to 20-1-0 overall and 12-0-0 in the WCHA.

Frederic named to U.S. National Junior Team preliminary roster

Wisconsin hockey star Trent Frederic has been named to USA Hockey’s preliminary roster for this year’s U.S. National Junior Team, which will compete in this years event in Buffalo, New York.

The preliminary roster consists of 28 players.  The group will gather in Columbus, Ohio for training camp Dec. 15-19, then again Dec. 20-23 in Jamestown, New York, where they will play pre-tournament games against Belarus on Dec. 20, and then against Sweden in Erie, Pennsylvania, on Dec. 22.

The team will be cut down to 23 player for the 2018 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship.

If Frederic makes the final cut, he would become the 54th Badger all-time to skate in the event, dating back to its official sanctioning in 1978.

The U.S. owns four gold medals, all since 2004, when then UW head coach Mike Eaves led the country to its first gold medal.

The other three gold medals came with Badgers as captains as Luke Kunin (2017), Jake McCabe (2013) and John Ramage (2011) served in the official capacity. [Read more…]

Hockey Badgers move back into first place in the Big Ten

The Wisconsin Badgers moved back into a first place tie with Minnesota atop the Big Ten Conference after rolling to a 7-4 win over Penn State on Friday night at Pegula Ice Arena.

Six different players scored goals for the Badgers (19-11-1, 12-5-0-0 Big Ten), led by Ryan Wagner, who scored the final two goals to seal it for Wisconsin.  His second tally was an empty-net goal.

The Badgers are now tied with Minnesota, after the Gophers fell to Michigan 5-3 on Friday night.

Jack Berry earned the win in goal, finishing with 34 saves on 38 shots.

The Badgers and Nittany Lions close out their two-game series tonight.  If Wisconsin can secure at least one point, they will clinch a top-two spot and a bye in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament.

With Ohio State’s loss to Michigan State on Friday night, the Badgers can finish no lower than third place in the standings.

Following tonight’s series finale, the Badgers return to Madison for their final series of the regular season, hosting Ohio State at the Kohl Center.

Badger hockey weekly honors

After a seven-point weekend that included a hat trick, Wisconsin women’s hockey senior Sarah Nurse was named the WCHA Offensive Player of the Week.

It marks the third time this year that Nurse, an alternate captain, has received accolades from the WCHA as she was named the WCHA Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 25 and Dec. 6, 2016.

Nurse tallied three points thanks to a goal and two assists in Wisconsin’s 7-0 win against Minnesota State before recording a hat trick along with an assists in the Badgers 6-0 win on Saturday. [Read more…]

Hockey Badgers fall at Denver

bucky-badger-logoThe Wisconsin Badgers comeback fell short in the third period, falling to the second-ranked Denver Pioneers 6-5 on Saturday night.

Wisconsin (7-5) started the third period with a goal from Max Zimmer to cut the Pioneers’ lead to 5-3 with just under 16 and a half minutes to play.

Denver went back up by three goals when Troy Terry scored on a 5-on-3 power play.

But the Badgers got goals from Grant Besse (PP) and Seamus Malone on a major power play at 8:36 to close the gap to one.

The Badgers had allowed just 12 shots on goal in a 2-1 victory at Colorado College, but they surrendered 45 shots against Denver.

Wisconsin freshman goaltender Jack Berry made 39 saves in Wisconsin’s loss.

The Badgers return home to face Omaha this next weekend at the Kohl Center.

Hockey Badgers grab series opener from Merrimack

Jake Linhart and Max Zimmer scored their first goals of the season to help the Wisconsin men’s hockey team (6-3-0, 0-0-0-0 Big Ten) knock off the Merrimack Warriors (4-6-3, 0-2-3-0 Hockey East) by a score of 3-2 on Friday night.

Luke Kunin scored the other goal for the Badgers, just 21 seconds into the game on an assist from Ryan Wagner.

Jack Berry saved 17 of the 19 shots he faced on the night to earn his second win in as many starts.

The Badgers outshot Merrimack 36-19.  The Badgers will play for the sweep over the Warriors when the two teams close out their series at the Kohl Center 7 p.m.
