Kotsay beats his former team

May 2, 2012 By Bill Scott

Pinch-hitter Mark Kotsay clubbed a 2-run, pinch hit home run to lead the San

Jeff Suppan with the Brewers

Diego Padres to a 2-0 win over the Milwaukee Brewers 2-0 at Petco Park in San Diego.

Kotsay, who played for the Brewers last season, clubbed a 1-1 pitch from Francisco Rodriguez to right field to win it for the Padres.

It was Kotsay’s fourth career pinch home run, but the first since 2002 in his first stint with the Padres.

Milwaukee’s Ryan Braun, who clubbed 3 home runs and a triple the night before, was just 1 for 4 last night.  As a team, the Brewers managed just 3-hits on the night.

The two starters, Edinson Volquez for the Reds and Shaun Marcum for the Brewers, both worked 7-innings of 3-hit, shutout ball.

The series is tied 1-1.  Yovani Gallardo pitches the finale for the Brewers.  Former Brewer Jeff  Suppan has been called up from Triple (A) and will start tonight for San Diego.

Brewers miss out on sweep of Houston

April 26, 2012 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers had the brooms out, but there would be no sweep over the Houston Astros on Wednesday afternoon at Miller Park.

Houston pulled out a 7-5 win, ending a 11-game slide against the Brewers.

Ryan Braun, Travis Ishikawa and Corey Hart all homered for the Brewers, but Houston put together a 14-hit attack to pull out the victory.

Chris Snyder put the Astros in front for good at 5-4 with an RBI single in the seventh inning off of Jose Veras. [Read more…]

Rockies edge Brewers in 9th

April 21, 2012 By Bill Scott

John Axford failed to hold a 3-3 tie in the 9th and the Milwaukee Brewers dropped their series opener to the Colorado Rockies 4-3 at Miller Park on Friday night.

Axford came out of the bullpen to start the 9th inning for the Brewers.  Pinch hitter Jason Giambi hit a bloop single to start the Rockies rally and was replaced by pinch runner Eric Young.  Young moved to second on a pickoff throwing error by Axford, then took 3rd on a flyout.  Michael Cuddyer came on as a pinch hitter and singled up the middle to drive in the game winning run for the Rockies.

Matt Belisle earned the win for Colorado and Rafael Betancourt pitched the ninth for his fourth save.  Rockies starter Jhoulys Chacin went seven innings, giving up three runs and four hits with a walk and six strikeouts.  He also had an RBI single in the fourth. [Read more…]

Brewers beat Cubs playing small ball

April 10, 2012 By Bill Scott

With the temperatures plummeting at Wrigley Field, the Milwaukee Brewers did the little things to help them earn a 7-5 win over the Chicago Cubs in the series opener.

The Brewers drove in runs with squeeze bunts and sacrifice flys.  They advanced runners simply by putting the ball in play.  On this night, the Brewers wouldn’t rely on the home run, although Rickie Weeks did hit one.  Instead, they would play small ball to get the job done.

Shaun Marcum allowed 3-runs in 6-innings of work to earn his first victory of the season.  He also helped his own cause by knocking in a run with a suicide squeeze bunt.

Just like last season, the Brewers made things interesting in the 9th.  They took a 7-3 lead into the final inning, surrendering a pair of runs before closer John Axford would eventually strike out Chicago’s Starlin Castro on three pitches to preserve the win.  Axford also earned his first save of the season.

Chris Narveson pitches game 2 of the series tonight.  The Brewers left hander finished 11-8 last season but is 6-1 with a 3.51 ERA in 13 career starts against the Cubs.

A big Sunday for the Brewers in Arizona

March 26, 2012 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers took both games of their split-squad double-header in Cactus League play Sunday in Arizona.

In one game, the Brewers took care of the Royals 7-3. This game was highlighted by 2B prospect Scooter Gennett hitting for the cycle.  Gennett is expected to start this year at Double-A Huntsville.

In the other game, Shaun Marcum made his first appearance on the mound this spring in a 7-1 win over the Dodgers.  Marcum, who has been battling a sore right shoulder, tossed 3-scoreless innings.  Also, Norichika Aoki clubbed his first Cactus league home run.

Milwaukee will take on the Cleveland Indians Monday at 3:05.

Marcum expects to be ready for start of season

March 22, 2012 By Bill Scott

Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Shaun Marcum said he does not expect to miss his first start of the regular season.

Marcum pitched for the first time this spring in a minor league game after originally being set back by shoulder inflammation.  Marcum went two-innings, allowing one hit, a home run, with no walks and two strikeouts.

Marcum said he expected to make his first regular-season start against the Cubs in Chicago April 9th or 10th.

Corey Hart

Outfielder Corey Hart was making his return from knee surgery, but he hurt himself again on Tuesday.

Hart needed 8 stitches to close a cut on his head after a weight-room accident.  Hart was working out on a weight machine when an overhead metal bar snapped back and whacked him on the head.

Hart missed most of training camp last spring with a strained oblique that forced him to go on the DL at the start of the season.

Marcum takes step forward

March 19, 2012 By Bill Scott

Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Shaun Marcum pitched two simulated innings with no discomfort against hitters, a big step towards his rejoining the Brewers starting rotation.

Pitching coach Rick Kranitz expects Marcum’s next assignment to be his first Cactus League start of the spring.

The Brewers had a 6-4 lead on the Rangers in Cactus League play yesterday, before the game was called by rain.  It’s the first rainout of a Cactus League game for the Brewers dating back to 2010.

The same two teams meet today.

Brewers special season comes to an end

October 17, 2011 By Bill Scott

2011 was a special season for the Milwaukee Brewers, but it didn’t have a

storybook ending.

The Brewers lost the last two games of their National League Championship Series (NLCS) to the St. Louis Cardinals, including last night’s 12-6 setback in game 6, losing the best of 7 series 4 games to 2.

Brewers manager Ron Roenicke was adamant about starting right hander Shaun Marcum in game 6 on Sunday night.  Marcum made it through just one inning and put the Brewers behind 4-0 by the time he left.  [Read more…]
