Wisconsin head basketball coach Greg Gard announced Wednesday that sophomore transfer Trevor Anderson and freshman Walt McGrory have been admitted to the University of Wisconsin and will walk on to the men’s basketball team.  The duo joins freshmen Brad Davison (Maple Grove, MN), Kobe King (La Crosse, WI) and Nathan Reuvers (Lakeville, MN) to give the Badgers five newcomers for the 2017-18 season.

Anderson (Stevens Point, WI) transferred to UW after playing one season at Green Bay.  During his freshman campaign, Anderson started the first 20 games of the season before a back injury sidelined him for the rest of the year.  He averaged 9.8 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game with the Phoenix, shooting 40% from the field and 37.6% from 3-point range.

As a prep, Anderson finished as the all-time leading scorer in Stevens Point Area Senior High School history with 2,360 points, the eighth-most points in the history of Wisconsin high school basketball.  His teams compiled a 100-6 career record, including back-to-back WIAA Division I State [Read more…]

Three of the state’s NCAA Division I men’s basketball programs were impacted Wednesday by news of players transferring. UW-Green Bay freshman Trevor Anderson announced he’ll be leaving the Phoenix, and his scholarship, to walk on with the Wisconsin Badgers.

Anderson averaged 9.8 nearly ten points, 2.9 rebounds, and 2.7 assists while shooting nearly 38% from three-point range as the starting point guard at UWGB before a back injury ended his first season. The 6’2″ Anderson was the state’s Mr. Basketball leading Stevens Point Area Senior High to back-to-back state titles. He scored 2,360 points in his high school career. Per NCAA transfer rules, Anderson will sit out the 2017-18 season and have three years of eligibility remaining.

Wisconsin added another 2,000-point prep scorer Wednesday with 6’3″ walk-on guard Walt McGrory from Edina, Minnesota. McGrory turned down scholarship offers from Drake and South Dakota State, among others, to join the Badgers.

As first reported by ESPN, the Marquette Golden Eagles will add Nebraska transfer Ed Morrow to their 2018-19 roster. The 6’7″ power forward averaged 9.4 points and 7.5 rebounds last year for the Cornhuskers. The Chicago, Illinois, native will have two year of eligibility remaining after sitting out the upcoming season per NCAA transfer rules.

Wisconsin and Marquette each have one scholarship left to use for 2017-18.

Packers make Biegel’s dream a reality, complete ten-member draft class

May 1, 2017 By Bill Scott

Vince Biegel

From Wisconsin Rapids to the Wisconsin Badgers and now to the Green Bay Packers, the cheesehead dreams of Vince Biegel became a realization on Saturday. The Packers selected the former UW outside linebacker with the first pick of the fourth round (No. 108 overall).

The 6’3″, 246-pound Biegel completes the trifecta of playing football at every level possible within the state of Wisconsin, an accomplishment he says has been a tremendous opportunity.

Biegel battled a foot injury during his senior season in Madison, but was a three-year starter with 191 career tackles and 21.5 sacks. Known for his pass rushing prowess, the second team All-Big Ten selection has also proven to be a disruptive stopper against the run.

The selection of Biegel completed a run of four consecutive draft choices on the defensive side of the ball. [Read more…]
