Hughes gets two-year deal with Reds

December 27, 2017 By Bill Scott

Former Milwaukee Brewers relief pitcher Jared Hughes has agreed to a two-year, $4.5-million deal with the Cincinnati Reds.  The deal includes a club option for 2020 as well.

Hughes is set to earn just over $2.1 million in each of the next two seasons.  The option year in 2020 is worth $3 million with a $250,000 buyout.

Hughes can earn up to $750,000 annually in performance bonuses.

Hughes went 5-3 with a 3.02 ERA for the Milwaukee Brewers last season with one save in 67 appearances.  He became a free agent when the Brewers didn’t offer him a contract for 2018 prior to the December 1 deadline.

The Milwaukee Brewers rebounded from a shutout loss to Pittsburgh on Monday by beating the Pirates 5-2 on Tuesday night at Miller Park.

Manager Craig Counsell used a total of seven pitchers with starter Brent Suter giving the Brewers just three innings.  The bullpen responded with six scoreless frames to pull out the victory.

Jeremy Jeffress followed Suter, then it was Oliver Drake, Jared Hughes, Anthony Swarzak, Josh Hader and Corey Knebel to finish it out.  Knebel registered two more strikeouts and notched his 35th save of the season.

The Brewers offense got to Pirates right hander Gerrit Cole for five early runs, including a four-run third inning.  [Read more…]

Rough 8th inning costs the Brewers in loss to Washington

The Washington Nationals scored seven runs in the 8th inning, coming from behind to knock off the Milwaukee Brewers 8-5 on Wednesday night.

The Brewers suffered their seventh loss in nine games on their current three-city road trip and fell a half game behind the Chicago Cubs for first place in the National League Central Division.

The Brewers bullpen suffered its 26th loss of the season, failing to protect the lead for starter Jimmy Nelson.  Nelson allowed two runs in seven innings but wasn’t involved in the decision.  He walked only one and struck out 10.

The loss goes to Jacob Barnes, who got two ground balls, but both found holes to drive in runs.  Josh Hader came on to strike out Bryce Harper and Craig Counsell then went to Jared Hughes to face Ryan Zimmerman.  Not only did Zimmerman deliver a run scoring hit, Hughes coughed up four runs on four hits before finally retiring the Nationals.

Domingo Santana and rookie Lewis Brinson both delivered long home runs in the loss.  Brinson’s was the first of his major league career.

The final game of the series gets underway at 11:05 a.m. this morning.  Michael Blazek (0-0, 0.00) makes his first start for the Brewers.  Max Scherzer (11-5, 2.26) goes for Washington.  Blazek starts in place of Matt Garza, who was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a calf strain.

The Brewers also officially announced their trade with the White Sox, acquiring Anthony Swarzak for outfielder Ryan Cordell.  Swarzak didn’t arrive in time for last night’s game but he’ll be in uniform today.  To make room on the roster for Swarzak, the Brewers sent Brett Phillips back to the minors.

The Milwaukee Brewers blew a 9th inning lead and lost their fourth straight, 3-2 in 10 innings against the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park.

Brewers all-star closer Corey Knebel gave up the tying run in the ninth inning and Jared Hughes gave up the game winner in the 10th, giving the Pirates the first three games in the series.

The Brewers lead atop the National League Central has dwindled to 1 1/2 games over the Chicago Cubs, who beat the Braves 8-2 on Wednesday.

Domingo Santana gave the Brewers the lead in the 8th inning with a solo home run.

The Pirates tied it in the ninth when Corey Knebel walked David Freese and served up back to back singles to Gregory Polanco and Francisco Cervelli.

Pittsburgh rookie Max Moroff’s bloop single to center field won it for the Pirates.

The Brewers first run came in the first when Santana doubled, took third on a throwing error and scored on a single off the bat of Jesus Aguilar.

Zach Davies pitched seven innings for the Brewers, scattering eight singles.  He allowed on earned run and one walk with four strikeouts.

The Brewers will send Jimmy Nelson (8-4, 3.27) to the mound on Thursday afternoon as they look to break their four game losing streak.  The Pirates will counter with Jameson Taillon (5-3, 3.06).  First pitch time is set for 12:35 p.m.

Brewers win streak stops at four

April 16, 2017 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers saw their four game road winning streak come to an end on Saturday, falling to the Central Division leading Cincinnati Reds 7-5 at Great American Ballpark.

Zach Davies struggled again early and racked up a high pitch count (96) by the time he got through the fifth inning.  This time, the Brewers bullpen didn’t lend a helping hand, as Carlos Torres surrendered three runs in the sixth inning and Jared Hughes gave up a run in the 7th.

It was former Brewers infielder Scooter Gennett, who singled in a run in the sixth inning, delivered with a run scoring double in the 7th. [Read more…]
