A record setting day for Flynn

The Green Bay Packers were able to rest a few key members of their football team and close out the season with a 45-41 win over the

Matt Flynn

Detroit Lions at Lambeau Field as well.

With Aaron Rodgers getting a day off, his backup Matt Flynn passed for 480 yards and 6 touchdowns, both of those figures are franchise records.

Wide receiver Jordy Nelson was on the receiving end of three of those Flynn touchdown passes.  That gives Nelson 5 touchdown catches in the last 2 games and 15 for the season.  That ranks Flynn 3rd on the Packers all-time list for touchdowns in a season.  Sterling Sharpe had 18 in 1994 and Don Hutson had 17 in 1942.

The two teams combined for 1,000 yards and 11 touchdowns.  Lions QB Matthew Stafford passed for 520 yards against the Packers defense.  Detroit wideout Calvin Johnson dominated Tramon Williams, catching 11 passes for 244 yards and a touchdown.  Stafford had five touchdown passes on the day. Seven Packers earn Pro Bowl selections

The Green Bay Packers have seven of their players represent them on the 2011-12 NFC Pro Bowl team.  The Packers learned that wide receiver Greg Jennings, fullback John Kuhn, linebacker Clay Matthews, quarterback Aaron Rodgers, nose tackle B.J. Raji, center Scott Wells and cornerback Charles Woodson were named Pro Bowl selections by the National Football League.  Kuhn, Matthews, Rodgers and Woodson were named starters for the NFC.

Kicker Mason Crosby was named first alternate.  Other alternates include linebacker Desmond Bishop, returner Randall Cobb, tight end Jermichael Finley, wide receiver Jordy Nelson, guard Josh Sitton and cornerback Tramon Williams.

The seven players are the most the Packers have had voted into the Pro Bowl since 1967.

John Kuhn, B.J. Raji and Scott Wells are all first time Pro Bowl selections.

Rodgers is AP Male Athlete of the Year

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has been named the 2011 Male

Aaron Rodgers

Athlete of the Year chosen by members of the “Associated Press” after his MVP performance in the Packers’ Super Bowl win in February and his play during the current season.

Rodgers received 112 votes out of the 212 ballots submitted from U.S. news organizations that make up the AP’s membership.

Detroit Tigers ace Justin Verlander finished second with 50 votes.

Rodgers is one of three quarterbacks to receive the honor in the past five years.  The last quarterback to win the award was Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints last year.

Packers pursuit of perfection ends at Arrowhead

Dealing with injuries and the pressure that goes along with the pursuit of a perfect season, the Green Bay Packers winning streak finally came to an end.  After 19-straight victories and a 13-0 record to start this season, the unlikely villain turned out to be the Kansas City Chiefs.  It was the Chiefs that dominated the time of possession and committed zero turnovers in a 19-14 upset victory over the Packers.

The Packers struggled offensively.  Aaron Rodgers completed less than 50% of his passes (17-35), although he had plenty of help.  In the first half, Green Bay receivers dropped six passes, four of them by tight end Jermichael Finley who has had plenty of issues hanging on to the football this season.  Jordy Nelson was even hit with a pair of offensive pass interference penalties.  Aaron Rodgers was also sacked four times.

Defensively, the Packers struggled to get off the field and despite leading the NFL in interceptions, got nothing from the Chiefs.  Kyle Orton, who has lost to the Packers earlier this season as a member of the Denver Broncos, completed 23 of 31 for 299 yards and turned out to be a real difference maker.

The Chiefs gave their interim head coach Romeo Crennel a win in his first game after Todd Haley was fired earlier in the week.

The Packers may still go on to win the Super Bowl, but they won’t do it as an unbeaten team.  They have home games left against the Bears on Christmas night and the Lions on New Years day.  They’ll try to correct their mistakes on film and then start getting ready for the Chicago Bears next.

Clements looking at Penn State job

Green Bay Packers quarterback coach Tom Clements has sent his resume to Penn State officials in the hopes of being the school’s next head coach.  Clements received a pretty good endorsement from Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers yesterday.
