Packers decide not to pick up Perry’s option year

May 6, 2015 By Bill Scott

Nick Perry

Nick Perry

The Green Bay Packers have decided not to pick up the fifth-year option on OLB Nick Perry’s rookie contract.

The Packers would have been on the hook for more than $7 million in 2016 had they executed the option.  The team instead will pay Perry’s base salary of more than $1.4 million in 2015, which will be the final year of his deal.

Because of injury, Perry has played in 32 out of a possible 48 regular-season games.  But Perry played his best football last season, appearing in all but one game.  He totaled 4.5 QB sacks.

All first-round picks in 2011 or later signed four-year deals with a club option for a fifth year.  It was a provision added to the CBA following the lockout after the 2010 season.

In the two affected seasons, the Packers have declined options on Perry this year and Derek Sherrod last season.

If Perry plays well, it is possible the Packers could try to resign him to a new deal for next season.  If they don’t, Perry would become an unrestricted free agent.

Packers get good news on injuries

September 6, 2014 By Bill Scott

Eddie Lacy

Eddie Lacy

One day after the 36-16 loss to the Seattle Seahawks, the Green Bay Packers learned that their two injured starters, right tackle Bryan Bulaga and running back Eddie Lacy, shouldn’t miss extended time.

ESPN reported that Bulaga suffered a sprain to his medial collateral ligament in his left knee, the same knee that required ACL surgery last summer.  Packers coach Mike McCarthy said Bulaga wants to return quickly and practice on Wednesday, but the Packers medical staff wants to be cautious.

If Bulaga is forced to miss time, don’t expect the Packers to go elsewhere for a replacement.  McCarthy made it clear on Friday that Derek Sherrod, who allowed a pair of sacks in the Seattle game, would be the starter at right tackle.

Lacy suffered a concussion near the end of Thursday’s loss.  It’s the second concussion of Lacy’s young career.  He missed a game last season after suffering his first concussion.

If Lacy isn’t cleared in time to face the Jets a week from Sunday, James Starks (37 yds on 7 carries) would get the start.

Packers may be looking for tackle help

Derek Sherrod had put himself in front of the pack for the Green Bay Packers swing-tackle job after a solid performance in the preseason opener at Tennessee.  But Sherrod’s lack of speed was exposed in last Saturday’s 21-7 victory over the Rams in St. Louis.  That could leave the Packers looking for help.

Fellow tackle Aaron Adams struggled just as much, leaving the Packers with some concern about who would protect quarterback Aaron Rodgers if something were to happen to starters David Bahktiari or Bryan Bulaga.

The Packers went into training camp with veteran Don Barclay set as the top backup at tackle, but Barclay suffered a season-ending ACL tear.

As teams cut their rosters down over the next two weeks, don’t be surprised if the Packers aren’t keeping a close eye on the waiver wire, looking to strengthen their depth at tackle.

The worst is feared with Packers lineman Barclay

August 6, 2014 By Bill Scott

Don Barclay

Don Barclay

For the first two weeks of training camp, we’ve heard a number of people declare that this could be the best Green Bay Packers offensive line in a decade, including head coach Mike McCarthy.

But the depth of the offensive line may have just taken a big hit after Don Barclay was carted off the practice field on a cart on Tuesday and reportedly has torn his ACL.

The Packers were counting on Barclay to be the top backup at up to four positions on the line.  Now former first round pick Derek Sherrod would appear to be the favorite to back up both tackle positions and Lane Taylor the leader at the moment to back up at the two guard spots.

Last season, Barclay suffered a torn medial collateral ligament in the same right knee in game 10 but missed only two games.

Barclay is by far the most experienced backup the Packers have.  He started six games in 2012 and 15 more a year ago.

Mike McCarthy is expected to officially update the media on Barclay’s status later today.

Packers’ offensive line getting healthier

Packers loss to the Giants.  There’s a chance Sherrod’s duties could increase this week, especially if Don Barclay isn’t ready to return to the lineup at right tackle this week against the Minnesota Vikings.

Yesterday (Wednesday), rookie J.C. Tretter practiced for the first time since Day 1 of OTA’s.  On that day, Tretter broke his ankle during a fumble recovery drill.

AUDIO: Mike McCarthy on JC Tretter’s return :22

Tretter spent the first 11 weeks on the P.U.P. list.  He now has three weeks to practice before the Packers have to make a decision on him.

Packers injuries

The Green Bay Packers had 12 players on their injury list and of the twelve, seven players didn’t practice at all.  Don Barclay (knee), Casey Hayward (hamstring), Sam Shields (hamstring), Nick Perry (foot/ankle), Johnny Jolly (groin), James Nixon (knee) and Aaron Rodgers (collarbone).

Vikings QB

Minnesota head coach Leslie Frazier has named Christian Ponder the Vikings starting quarterback for Sunday’s game at Lambeau Field against the Packers.

Rodgers confirms collarbone injury

November 5, 2013 By Bill Scott

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers confirmed on his weekly radio show today (ESPN-Milwaukee) that he suffered a broken collarbone.  Rodgers suffered the injury while being sacked in Chicago’s 27-20 win over the Packers in Monday Night Football action at Lambeau Field.

Rodgers called it a significant injury but said there’s no timetable for his return.  It leaves Seneca Wallace to get ready to start against the Philadelphia Eagles this Sunday at Lambeau Field.

The Packers are expected to elevate QB Scott Tolzien to the active roster to serve as backup to Seneca Wallace, although no official move has been announced yet.  The Packers did activate tackle Derek Sherrod from the reserve/physically unable to perform list and placed LB Sam Barrington and TE Jermichael Finley on season ending injured reserve.

Finley played in six games with five starts this season and caught 25 passes for 300 yards (12.0 avg.) and three touchdowns.  Barrington appeared in seven games and recorded three tackles on special teams.

Packers announce roster moves

August 27, 2013 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers made their roster moves, getting down to the 75 player limit by 3pm this afternoon.

The Packers released kicker Zach Ramirez after he lost his brief training camp battle with Mason Crosby.

Both kickers hit missed just once on Sunday, but Crosby bounced back with a perfect 16 for 16 effort today, while Ramirez his just 6 of 16 from a variety of distances.

The Packers also put T Bryan Bulaga, WR Kevin Dorsey, RB DuJuan Harris and LB Jarvis Reed on injured reserve.

Safety Sean Richardson, T Derek Sherrod, T JC Tretter and DE Jerel Worthy were all placed on reserve/physically unable to perform.

Green Bay Packers first round draft pick Datone Jones left the practice field this

Datone Jones

afternoon with a left ankle injury.  He left the first preseason game against Arizona with the same injury, just one play into his first game.

There’s certainly no indication that Jones will miss any regular season time, but just think about the bad luck the Packers have had with their first round picks.

You have to go back to 2009 when they picked both B.J. Raji and Clay Matthews.  2012 top pick Nick Perry missed most of his rookie season with an injury.  Derek Sherrod (2011) broke his leg in his rookie season and is still fighting to return nearly two years later.  And 2010 top pick Bryan Bulaga has made significant contributions to the team, yet missed the second half of last season (HIP) and is out all of this year (ACL).

My thoughts on this topic and the latest on the Packers follow in today’s WRN Sports Daily.

Packers open Training Camp

Mike McCarthy

The Green Bay Packers are on the practice field Friday morning as 2013 Training Camp begins.

Last season, injuries were a big story of camp.  At times, the Packers were so depleted at some positions, they needed to cut practices short.  This year, health was on the mind of Head Coach Mike McCarthy when he put together the schedule…

Off. Line shuffling takes center stage at OTA’s (Audio)

May 22, 2013 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers are using their spring OTA workouts as a chance to get their

Bryan Bulaga

Bryan Bulaga

reconfigured offensive line settled into their new roles.

Every player on the offensive line is shifting to a new spot, except center Evan Dietrich-Smith.

The change came about four weeks ago, but it was put into lace this week during team OTA workouts.

Mike McCarthy said Bryan Bulaga is his best tackle and he wants to shift him to the left side.  Bulaga, along with guard Josh Sitton, are making the move from right to left to help protect Aaron Rodgers blind side. [Read more…]
