Offense picking up, Brewers win third straight against Cubs (AUDIO)

August 17, 2020 By Bill Scott

Orlando Arcia

After losing the series opener last Thursday, the Milwaukee Brewers were involved in three tight games with the Chicago Cubs, closing out the 4-game series with a 6-5 win on Sunday at Wrigley Field.  It gave the Brewers three of four in the series, including three straight wins.

Josh Hader came on in relief to get the save, but needed a 13-pitch at bat by Chicago’s Nico Hoerner with two outs in the ninth inning to close it out.  Hader has now appeared in six games for the Brewers and hasn’t given up a hit.

The three straight wins pulls the Brewers record for the season at 10-10.

The Brewers had 12 hits on the day, six of them coming from the eight and nine hitters.  In the eight spot, Luis Urias had his second straight three hit game.  In the nine-spot, Orlando Arcia had three hits, including a triple and a two-run homer.

Keston Hiura, who had struggled all season with the bat, had two hits, including a three-run homer off of Jon Lester in the third inning.

The Brewers have Monday off and continue their road trip in Minneapolis to face the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday.  Corbin Burnes will get the start on the mound for Milwaukee.

Brewers offense struggles in loss to Cubs (AUDIO)

August 14, 2020 By Bill Scott

Justin Smoak

The Milwaukee Brewers have struggled offensively this season and their issues continued on Thursday night, in a 4-2 loss to the Chicago Cubs in their series opener at Wrigley Field.

Cubs starter Yu Darvish took a no-hitter into the seventh inning.  His no-hit bid ended with one out in the inning after Justin Smoak homered to right to cut the Cubs lead to three.  Darvish would finish the inning and call it a night.  He surrendered the one hit, two walks with 11 strikeouts to improve to 3-1 on the season.

Orlando Arcia singled in the eighth but was rubbed out on a double play.  The Brewers then closed the gap in the 9th when Avisail Garcia singled, made his way to third and scored on a Justin Smoak double.  Omar Narvaez ended the threat by popping out to left to end it, giving the Cubs three wins against their rivals to the north in four meetings this season.

The Cubs improved to 13-3 with the win, the best record in the majors so far this season.

Brett Anderson (0-2) got the start for the Brewers and surrendered two runs on five hits in 4 1/3 innings of work but suffered the loss.  He walked two and struck out five.  One of the five hits allowed by Anderson was a solo home run off the bat of Kyle Schwarber in the second inning.

Corbin Burnes came on in relief, pitching 3 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on two hits with three walks and five strikeouts.

Game two of the series is Friday night (7:15) at Wrigley Field.  Brandon Woodruff (1-1, 2.53) gets the start for the Brewers.  Tyler Chatwood (2-1, 5.40) goes for the Cubs.

Brewers drop home opener to White Sox

August 4, 2020 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers finally got to play a home opener at Miller Park, but it didn’t work out the way they had planned.  The Brewers jumped out to a 4-2 lead, then saw their bullpen surrender four runs in a 6-4 loss to the Chicago White Sox on Monday night.

The Brewers were playing their first game since a victory in Pittsburgh last Wednesday.

Brett Anderson got his first start in a Brewers uniform but took a drive off of his left foot from Chicago’s Luis Robert.  Yoan Mancada doubled him to third.  Jose Abreu drove in a run with a ground ball and Yasmani Grandal gave the White Sox a 2-0 lead with a sacrifice fly.

The Brewers cut the lead to 1 in the bottom half of the first when Christian Yelich snapped an 0-for-19 streak with a two-out double.  Avisail Garcia followed with a double of his own to score Yelich.

The Brewers took the lead in the 5th when Garcia drove in two runs with a single to left.  Ben Gamel’s sixth inning single to center scored Justin Smoak to put the Brewers up 4-2. [Read more…]

Burnes makes statement in battle to make starting rotation

July 16, 2020 By Bill Scott

Corbin Burnes

Milwaukee right-handed pitcher Corbin Burnes is trying to land a spot in the Brewers starting rotation and his performance on Wednesday night moved him in that direction.

Burnes retired all 12 batters he faced, striking out seven, to lead Team Gold to a 3-0 victory over Team Blue in the Brewers Blue & Gold World Series at Miller Park.

Burnes hit 98 mph with his fastball, retiring Christian Yelich twice (strikeout & ground out).

Omar Narvaez clubbed a two-run homer in the second inning off of Brett Anderson.  Anderson’s night was done after two innings due to a blister on his pitching hand.

Orlando Arcia drove in the third run for the Gold Team with a run scoring single in the fourth.

Team Gold now leads the series 2-0 with game three at Miller Park on Thursday night. [Read more…]

Twins knock out Hader, Brewers

Josh Hader surrendered a home run for the 13th time this season, in just 52 2/3 innings and the Minnesota Twins came from behind to knock off the Milwaukee Brewers 7-5 at Miller Park on Tuesday night.

Marwin Gonzalez was first pitch swinging in the 8th, taking a poorly located Hader fastball and depositing it over the wall in left-center field.  It was the sixth home run allowed by Hader in 12 2/3 innings since the all-star break.

Hader had allowed just nine home runs in 81 1/3 innings all of last season.

The Brewers had just taken the lead in the 7th inning by scoring four runs to go up 5-4.  Christian Yelich drove in a run with a double and Yasmani Grandal capped it with a  three-run homer.  It was Grandal’s 20th of the season, but his first since July 6. [Read more…]

Brewers pound Pirates in series opener

Mike Moustakas and Lorenzo Cain each drove in four runs as the Milwaukee Brewers knocked off the Pittsburgh Pirates 11-5 in the opener of a four game series at PNC Park on Thursday night.

Moustakas homered twice among his four hits, while Cain had two doubles.  Yasmani Grandal also had four hits and homered in the win.  Eric Thames added a solo shot as the Brewers won for the third time in the last four games, moving a half-game behind the idle Chicago Cubs atop the Central Division.

The Brewers had 18 hits on the night, 11 of them for extra bases.

Pittsburgh starter Joe Musgrove yielded five runs on 11 hits over six innings to take the loss as the Pirates fell to 3-8 in their last 11 games.  Colin Moran homered for the Pirates in the loss.

Chase Anderson pitched five innings for the Brewers, securing his third victory of the season.

The Pirates scored three times off of Corbin Burnes in the eighth to pull to within 7-5, but the Brewers came back with four runs in the ninth inning to put the game out of reach.

Jhoulys Chacin pitches game two of the four game series for the Brewers on Friday night.

Brewers rotational issues continue, fall to Rockies

May 3, 2019 By Bill Scott

Freddy Peralta

The Milwaukee Brewers activated Freddy Peralta before Thursday’s game, giving him the start against the Colorado Rockies.  Things didn’t go so well, leaving one to wonder if Peralta will lose his spot in the rotation.

Peralta allowed four runs in the first inning and nine runs (six earned) in four innings on the way to a 11-6 Brewers loss to the Rockies.  After winning the first two games of the series, the Brewers lost the last two, having to settle for a four-game split.

The Brewers going with Brandon Woodruff, Corbin Burnes and Freddy Peralta in their starting rotation has backfired for the first month of the season.  In 16 outings, 15 of which were starts, have a combined 7.68 ERA. [Read more…]

Brewers scramble, fall to Rockies

May 2, 2019 By Bill Scott

Chase Anderson File Photo by Bill Greenblatt/UPI

The Milwaukee Brewers found out less than hour before Wednesday night’s game against Colorado that starting pitcher Chase Anderson ripped open a callus on his right middle finger, sending him to the injured list.  That put the team in scramble mode as they needed to formulate a pitching plan for the night, minus Anderson.

Manager Craig Counsell handed the ball to reliever Jacob Barnes to start with and things went downhill from there.  Barnes walked the first two batters and Nolan Arenado followed with a three-run homer to center field, on the way to a 11-4 Colorado victory.

Arenado tacked on a solo homer in the ninth for his eighth home run of the season.  Trevor Story also clubbed a three-run homer for the Rockies.

Mike Moustakas hit a two-run homer for Milwaukee, and Ben Gamel added two hits and two RBI. [Read more…]

Brewers send Burnes to the minors

April 20, 2019 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers sent struggling starting pitcher Corbin Burnes to Class AAA San Antonio on Friday, two days after his fourth tough outing of the season.

Burnes has allowed 11 home runs in just 17 innings of work, but the Brewers have decided they didn’t want to return Burnes to the bullpen which is the role he pitched in last year.  Instead, the right-hander heads back to the minors to figure out his game, while continuing as a starter.

Burnes task will be trying to rediscover his fastball command.  Poor fastball location led to home runs by the opposition and Burnes leads the league in home runs allowed.

The Brewers also recalled left-handed reliever Donnie Hart from San Antonio and reinstated right-hander Alex Wilson from the paternity list.  They optioned right-hander Jake Petricka back to AAA San Antonio.

Chase Anderson will get the start for the Brewers in game three of their series against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday night.

Brewers fall to Cardinals, must deal with struggling Burnes

April 18, 2019 By Bill Scott

Craig Counsell

Corbin Burnes allowed two more home runs and made it through just 3 2/3 innings on Wednesday as the Milwaukee Brewers fell to the St. Louis Cardinals 6-3 in their series finale at Miller Park.

Burnes has now surrendered 11 home runs in his four starts and is now 0-2 with an ERA that has climbed to 10.70.

Marcell Ozuna and Matt Carpenter clubbed home runs off of Burnes on Wednesday.  The Cardinals as a team, banged out 15 hits in all, nine off of Burnes.

Last season, Burnes was a star in the Brewers bullpen, going 7-0 with a 2.61 ERA in 30 appearances.  As a starter this season, Burnes has had nothing but struggles.

The Brewers right-hander has struggled to locate his fastball, leaving the ball out over the plate far too often.  Ten of the 11 home runs that he has allowed, have come on fastballs. [Read more…]
